- Speaking section - third part, after the 10-minute break
- 1 - independent (usually first is open-ended)
- 2 - independent (usually the second is a choice)
- 3 - integrated reading/listening/speaking about a university announcement and conversation
- 4 - integrated reading/listening/speaking about a text and academic lecture
- 5 - integrated listening/speaking about a conversation about a problem and solutions
- 6 - integrated listening/speaking about an academic lecture
- ---
- Speaking task 4 is kind of similar to integrated writing, in that you have to explain how a lecture relates to a reading.
- - 45 seconds to read (usually the reading explains a general concept or idea)
- - time to listen (usually a professor talking about a specific example or illustration of the concept)
- - 30 seconds to prepare your response
- - 60 seconds to speak
- ---
- Handout (Cengage) p. 476 - Read about numeral systems and take notes
- Key ideas: numeral systems are sets of symbols to represent numbers, most are base-10 (from India/Arabic) because we have 10 fingers
- Then listen to the lecture (CD8.8) and take notes.
- What is the main topic of the lecture? - Not all numeral systems are base-10
- Examples:
- - Yuki Indians: base-8 because they counted the spaces between their fingers
- - Sumerians: base-60, which we still use for angles and time, but not in other situations because it’s hard to do calculations
- ---
- What might the question be after this reading and lecture?
- ---
- p. 478 - Take 45 seconds to read about dolls.
- Why are dolls a good way to learn about a society?
- Listen to the lecture and take notes, then answer questions 15-17 on p. 479 with your partner.
- 15 Kachina dolls.
- 16 spiritual educational dolls, names of spirits, what they look like
- 17 There are more than 200 spirits.
- ---
- DELTA p. 292 - take 45 seconds to read about the effects of color, then listen and take notes.
- “Use the examples from the lecture to explain the effects of color.”
- ---
- 1 Explain the general idea of the reading.
- 2 Lead-in describing what the professor says (does the professor give examples, illustrations, research results?)
- 3 Professor’s first point, with details/examples
- 4 Professor’s second point, with details/examples
- (5 Professor’s third point, with details/examples)
- ---
- With your partner, take 5 minutes to prepare a response to this.
- DELTA p. 303 has a sample response to this question, but it is a bit too short and should probably include more about the reading.
- ---
- Remember that pronunciation and grammar is only important to the extent that it affects understanding.
- ---
- ETS test 1 - Give your response to your partner.
- ---
- BREAK
- ---
- Record your responses to speaking task 4 in ETS tests 2, 3, and 4.
- Listen to your responses and choose the one that is least bad.
- Listen to your classmates’ responses and notice what’s good or bad about each one.
- ---
- Read the essays about super foods from yesterday. Does each one include the main points? Is citation language used correctly? Contrast language?
- Using DELTA p. 286 as a guide, what score would you give each one?
- Remember: The question asks you to summarize points made by the lecture. If you don’t talk about any of those specific points, you’ll get a 1.
- ---
- What are some specific things you need to work on for your next writing?
- ---
- Homework (if you want detailed writing feedback): Reply-all to one of your essay emails from yesterday, with a brief self-evaluation. If you’ve done previous essays, tell me what you think you did better or worse this time. Then tell me some things you will try to work on improving for your next writing.
