  7. ----------------------------------
  8.
  9.
  10.
  11. {You seem to be the head of this rabble.}
  12.
  13. Ha, should probably ditch this hunk of iron. Doesn't take much to command authority than a full set of armour.
  14.
  15. So yeah, guess I'm somewhat of a leader. And you? Didn't just wander in with an absent mind I'm guessing.
  16.
  17. {I was sent by the temple of Mara to see what I could do to help (Lie)}
  18.
  19. You know I was curious why we haven't seen then skulking about, those arsons that is. Thought the dogs were hatching some plot to raze this dwelling of ours.
  20.
  21. Ah, what a relief. Finally the priests have gotten through to the military, not often does that lead to good - yet they're desperate to seek a cure.
  22.
  23. A cure that wont come about through burning those who may carry it. Al right missionary, how do you plan to help?
  24.
  25. {I need information on the activity here, the types of people and their plans. So we can suit individual needs}
  26.
  27. You know what, before we give up such personal details. Maybe you can do something for us? Not enough to barge in proclaiming divine guidance and expect us to submit.
  28.
  29. We need something else, more tangible. Since you've been sent by the priests, you must have some sway with 'em, else they wouldn't feel confident sending you.
  30.
  31. Now I know for a fact those priests hoard a good number of potions to slow this malady. Their crests were found on each package that was sent over when I was still a part of the kingdom.
  32.
  33. Now you can have a word with these priests, get us these potions, and we'll get into the nitty gritty here. Got that?
  34.
  35. {Understood}
  36.
  37. Good to hear - and ugh, you best not tell the priests about the specifics of this charity case. They may be men of mercy, but politics and beliefs don't mesh.
  38.
  39. But with the slightest hint of disease, they were expelled from the cities and forced to make homes in the wilderness.
  40.
  41. But onto our needs, we're lacking in potions of vitality that can snare the progress of this affliction. So I beg of you, return us these remedies.
  42.
  43. {I was sent by the men at the gate, they're worried about your motives.}
  44.
  45. Like hounds they come hunting a wounded cat eh? And they have the audacity to send a paid thug for me instead. Your body will be the reply.
  46.
  47. Ha. Those guards know me, and they knew exactly what would happen to one of their lapdogs they sent our way. Sorry to break the bad news, but they led you to your death.
  48.
  49. The gall to send a paid thug, *spits*. Time to die fool.
  50.
  51. {Your potions, as you requested.}
  52.
  53. Magnificent, the souls up here were getting desperate, making plans to sneak into the cities and claim them personally.
  54.
  55. Let's have a look at them...
  56.
  57. Pure, distilled - nothing seems to be floating in there. Was expecting you to bring me vials of piss, glad you kept your word.
  58.
  59. Now I'll have to get these to those bedridden, may give them a few more months.
  60.
  61. {So, back to what we were saying. What are your plans for this Refuge?}
  62.
  63. Look around you missionary, this isn't a place one can live out their years. We have to find more land, for food and people.
  64.
  65. Because if it isn't this sickness that claims us, then it'll be starvation - a far worse fate than burning I assure you.
  66.
  67. Since this plagues is bringing more souls to this little getup, we're gaining more sway. Sway that we can use to leverage some type of deal with the city south.
  68.
  69. Get 'em to pull back their butchers and have us settle some land east, upon some fertile stretch. They can wedge us between the many knolls out there and have us out of sight.
  70.
  71. If it means we can live on without the threat of a painful death.
  72.
  73. {What if they refuse?}
  74.
  75. It took 4 days for this affliction to fully turn me into the very people I slaughtered. I had the ability to cough my lungs out to my brothers-in-arms while they dazed off.
  76.
  77. I didn't, but it could have been so easy. This plague could have ran rampant through their kingdom, yet it didn't. All through my loyalty to that banner.
  78.
  79. Now if the kingdom seeks to spurn its loyal subject, then loyal it ceases to be. They need to remember that they're not the only plotters out here.
  80.
  81. My time in exile has not been an idle peace, many plans have been dwelled on. For contingency purposes, of course...
  82.
  83. What I'm saying is, they'll get theirs if my deal is turned down. Trust me on that.
  84.
  85.
  86.
  87. But in time we won't need to resort to petty thievery, with our growing numbers, those states will listen to our demands lest they be at our fury.
  88.
  89. {Those Aventuriers guarding Evermore's gate are making plans to assault this refuge. }
  90.
  91. Can't say I'm surprised, I've been a part of that detachment for half my life. I was hoping that they'd still have the sense not to risk infection by straying so far from that shield. Would you be willing to help us?
  92.
  93. You mean these dogs, trained from birth to kill without hesitation, are planning to slay a brother who left the pack?
  94.
  95. Shocked they haven't done it sooner, may be desensitized to death but it doesn't mean they're brave. I knew they hadn't the numbers to assault us before.
  96.
  97. Yet something must have changed, most probably word from up high forcing their hand.
  98.
  99. {I can help you fend them off?}
  100.
  101. A fighter are we? You're full of surprises. Well if you can wield a blade then you're better help than most here. An I gotta warn you, friend..
  102.
  103. You're going to earn the wrath of the kingdom for this - if you leave any witnesses of the kingdom. Get my drift?
  104.
  105. {Yeah I understand}
  106.
  107. No mercy to be found out here, they'll come in with balls as big as boulders - thinking we're too meek to resist.
  108.
  109. But we'll give 'em a real shock. Won't we? Ha.
  110.
  111. Now let's get ready.
  112.
  113. {Alright, I'll see to it that they don't burn this place to the ground.}
  114.
  115. {They also gave me a flare to use, in case I was in trouble}
  116.
  117. Yeah, course they did. Foolish of me to forget, since they had another poor fool do the same a week before my leaving.
  118.
  119. That fool never returned, and never popped that flare. But you will.
  120.
  121. {Huh, why?}
  122.
  123. A good a lure as any, they wont expect the one they're running to help to turn cloak, will they? Dirty I know, but there's no clean way to survive in the reach.
  124.
  125. Find a spot where you've got a clear line to the sky, make sure they get a good look at that flare as there's only one. Good luck.
  126.
  127. Good, I assume they gave you some type of flare right? I would know, they had me do something similar before the unfortunate event that had me find domicile here. Let's hope their numbers have dwindled since the last time I was with them.
  128.
  129. [Scene where Player and Character defeats people assaulting refuge]
  130.
  131. We actually did it, I've seen those men cut down scores of our own without pause nor respite. To see them finally answer for their crimes puts a grin on my face that I'm not ashamed of showing.
  132.
  133. Ha! That's a show of strength eh! The meek will come for the strong! Couldn't have done it without your help.
  134.
  135. You really staked your life on those here, If I weren't stricken myself i'd had called you mad. An' you know what, I'm still puzzling if you are.
  136.
  137. {I did it because it was the good thing}
  138.
  139. Aye I'll go for that instead. Oh the Kingdom and its people can cry about divine authority and righteousness, but your feats here should earn the respect of all their gods.
  140.
  141. {Hopefully they wont send anyone else for the time being.}
  142.
  143. You're no doubt gonna be a target for Evermore, so if you're looking to bypass the capitol then you're gonna need access to The Cistern.
  144.
  145. {The Cistern?}
  146.
  147. The City's rotten underbelly, where the refuse of the surface gather - sounds welcoming right? Well my lucky friend, you've got the fortune of seeing it first hand.
  148.
  149. Take this key, it'll give you access to and through that hole, out the other end of Evermore. Hope it helps on your journeys, you're more than welcome to return.
  150.
  151. {What happened to you then? What are the aventuriers like?}
  152.
  153. One question at a time - I came across a bad stroke of luck and had my fate change to that of the hunted than the hunter. I feel it to be retribution for my crimes against these people.
  154.
  155. Asking how I got involved with them at the gate? Wasn't a choice, work in the military was always in store for me since I was a babe. Dad was a military man, and his dad too.
  156.
  157. But the unit I came to be a part of is no ordinary group, gotta sacrifice much to even apply. But the rewards are far greater than you'd get as a pikeman, no question.
  158.
  159. {What sacrifices?}
  160.
  161. Our officer, the man who most likely sent you here, has been in this gig longer than any other. Now, you ever wander why they never take off their helmets?
  162.
  163. {I assume for protection?}
  164.
  165. Hahaha! Those cages are more likely to get you killed! Nah, if you're dealing with our magic long enough, certain things, unwanted things start appearing.
  166.
  167. And that Officer got real deep in this fiery art, and he got burnt, hard. Take off his armour, and you'll regret it. Charred from head to toe, not sure how someone in that state is still breathing.
  168.
  169.
  170. As soon as the bloated skin appeared, I was off. I knew the consequences of bearing plague near those flame spewing bastards - they would have turned me to cinders and laughed about it.
  171.
  172. {They're not your friends?}
  173.
  174. Friends?! You don't make friends in that career, those aventuriers are too desensitized - if there was ever someone who needed purging from the kingdom then it would be them.
  175.
  176. Don't make friends in that career, you have to think of them as a weapon - a double edged sword. Can have your back and pull you out of sticky situation.
  177.
  178. Or they could set you alight the moment your skin turns a strange hue.
  179.
  180.
  181. {How did the people here so readily accept you?}
  182.
  183. These are a modest lot, a truth that shocked me when they lowered their weapons and accepted me into the fold. Could have opened my neck in my sleep, could have done a lot of things..
  184.
  185. But they didn't, they broke bread and talked of earlier days. Sometimes I miss my old "friends", butchers, vagrants and the lot. With them there's no confusion.
  186.
  187. With the bad, you're justified. The world is viscous, nothing ever gonna change that, that was the belief. And you smiled through the madness and death.
  188.
  189. But with the good, you regret, start to question your past. Strange feelings flood your mind all at once - you start to hope.
  190.
  191. {Nice story}
  192.
  193. Ha, it's sure to yank the hearts of the tender sort, not us.
  194.
  195.
  196.
  197. Not everyone they burn even bear the affliction, sometimes they use some poor straggler as target practice. I would know, I started doing the same just before my exile.
  198.
  199. I don't expect sympathy nor a good death, I just hope that a cure is delivered for everyone else here.
  200.
  201. I would probably be tried and executed for treason if I were cured and returned to the city, so my exile is permanent.
  202.
  203. [NPC REACTS TO PLAYER STEALING]
  204. Say good bye to your hands, thief.
  205.
  206. [NPC DYING WORDS]
  207. Done...
  208. Peace...
  209.
  210. [NPC REACTS TO FRIENDS DEATH]
  211. You'll bleed for that.
  212.
  213. [NPC ATTACKED]
  214. If that's how you wanna play.
  215. Ugh!
  216. Get out of here!
  217. No you bloody don't!
  218. Agh!
  219. Fool!
  220.
  221. [NPC BLOCKING ATTACKS]
  222. That all?
  223. It'll take more than that.
  224.
  225. [NPC BLEEDING OUT, ON KNEES]
  226. This it it then...
  227.
  228.
  229. [NPC ATTACKING PLAYER/ENEMY]
  230. Rat meat!
  231. You're gonna burn!
  232. Eat fire!
  233. I'll cave your skull in!
  234. Wrong move.
  235. You're slipping.
  236. What kind of evil are you?
  237. Feeling tired?
  238. Another gutter rat.
  239. Time to meet your end.
  240. Gods... The stench.
  241. Hideous Orc, I'll kill off your entire gods forsaken race.
  242.
  243. [NPC REACTS TO CORPSE]
  244. Killer's near, gotta be.
  245.
  246. [NPC REACTS TO PLAYER SWINGING WEAPON]
  247. Hit me and I'll throw you on your ass.
  248.
  249. [NPC REACTS TO PLAYER SPELLS]
  250. Real fancy.
  251. Who you trying to impress?
  252.
  253. [PLAYER SHOVES NPC]
  254. Watch it, fool.
  255. Lost your mind?
  256.
  257. [NPC REACTS TO OTHER CHARACTERS FIGHTING]
  258. Finish this up you fools.
  259.
  260. [NPC SAYS GOODBYE]
  261. Don't be dying on me now.
  262. See ya around.
  263.
  264.
  265. [NPC SAYS HELLO]
  266. Whadya need? {What do you need?}
  267. Hello princess.
  268. The man I need.
  269. Fancy a chat?
  270. Come on, spill it.
  271. Alright?
  272.
  273.
  274. [NPC HORRIFIED]
  275. What in oblivion!
  276.
  277.
  278. [NPC SEES HOSTILE]
  279. Ha, there you are!
  280. Ain't getting away from me!
  281.
  282. [NPC LOOKING FOR HOSTILE]
  283. I'm on your trail.
