Purpose to the universe?

I was trying to prove to my friend Greg that there is a Purpose with a capital P to the universe.first of all I told him the purpose to the universe is to observe itself.then we talked about what an “objective” is,   usual objectives of purposes can only be thought up by people or animals.  for example, if I said “I will go to France next year” that would be an objective I thought up. but then I started to think that even tho objectives can only be thought up by living beings, that even living beings are made up of non-living particles that are just obeying the laws of physics. so whatever we can call an “objective” or purpose is the same as any other non living thing following the path of nature, for example if you had a rock travelling from this galaxy to the andromeda galaxy, it is following it’s path in the same way the particles that make my brain cells fire are just following a predestined path. his counter argument was that I was when we were talking about me making an appointment to meet him in France and if there was a hurricane that blocked me from flying to France, we would not usually say that the hurricane was following an objective, we would say that the end result of the hurricane caused me to miss my flight. he said I was using the word “objective” in the way the word “result” should be used. What do you guys think?
