- Star Ocean
- Platform: Snes / SFC
- Released: 19.07.1996
- Based on: NTSC-J-version (SHVC-ARFJ-JPN)
- - This game is a spiritual successor to Tales of Phantasia.
- - Depending on your choices and actions, some events will play differently
- and some are not available at all.
- × Given all the mutually exclusive stuff in the game, you may want to
- buy a second copy to get three more save files (if you haven't made the
- switch to flash carts, which you should).
- - There are 11 playable characters in the game: 4 mandatory (Rati, Milly,
- Iria, Ronix) and 7 optional (Cius, Ashlay, Fear, Joshua, Marvel, Tinek,
- Perisie). At most, you can get four optional characters to join you
- permanently.
- - You can change weapons, characters and tactics during battle. You still
- can't disable or enable spells, though.
- - Running doesn't increase the encounter rate (aside from the fact that
- you're accumulating steps faster).
- - The Check accessories have been nerfed and now provide only partial
- resistance while also having a chance to break.
- - Unidentified items return, but Rune Bottles are gone. Instead, you use
- the appraisal skill, Kantei, to ID them.
- - Instead of giving you regeneration, food now gives you regular healing,
- although they can't be used during battle.
- - Stats:
- × Str -> base ATP (Attack Power)(Kougeki)
- × Con -> base DFP (Defense Power)(Bougyo)
- × Agl -> base Accuracy (Meichuu)
- × Int is mainly used by mages, although the efficiency of healing spells
- cast in the menu depends on the target's Int instead of the caster's.
- × Guts -> critical hit roll 1 (1,5x dmg), defend roll (halved damage).
- × Stm -> The amount of Stamina at the start of each battle.
- × Your base Evade (Kaihi) is fixed (ie. won't increase in any way) and
- varies between characters.
- - Stat gain per level & fixed stats:
- Str Con Agl Stm Guts Int Eva Atk Mov t
- Rati 3-6 3-5 2-3 0-2 0-1 1-2 5 5\21 400 2,6

- Ronix 2-4 2-4 1-3 0-2 1 1-3 26 v\23 224 4,6
- Joshua 2-4 2-4 1-3 0-2 0-1 1-3 25 10\16 256 4,0
- - You start off gaining about 40 HP per level. By level 40, it'll be about
- 130 HP per level. You'll reach 9999 HP around Lv80.
- - You gain 4-7 MP per level.
- - Atk: Attack speed in frames: time to hit\total duration.
- - Mov: Movement speed. Multiply by 2 to get the actual subpixels per frame.
- The only way to increase movement speed during battle is by casting Haste.
- - t is the time it takes for the character to run from one end of the
- battlefield to the other.
- - Battles run at 30 fps, so what I refer to as a 'frame' is one video
- frame, technically two *actual* frames.
- - The max level is 255, but you're not really supposed to get anywhere
- near that figure.
- - Exp is always divided by the number of active party members even if some
- characters have been incapacitated (ie. dead, petrified, or paralyzed).
- Incapacitated characters, however, do not gain Exp, hence their share is
- simply lost.
- - Physical damage calculation is...
- (ATP - 3*tgtDFP)elcgdr
- × e: Elemental multiplier (1,0; 2,0; 0,5; 0; -1)
- × l: Ranged modifier. Ranged physical attacks always deal 1,5x damage.
- However, the damage will not increase from criticals nor do they have
- a chance of inflicting Stun. Ranged attacks by your PCs always produce
- the screen flash associated with crits, whereas ranged attacks by enemies
- will only do that if the crit roll succeeds. Either way, the effect is
- purely cosmetic.
- × c: Critical hit roll 1 (1,5x), as defined by the Crit value of your
- equipment, mainly your weapon (Crit/255). Most enemies have a Crit value
- of 50 (~20% rate), but few enemies have more than 0 Guts. Critical hits
- (from either roll) have a 50% chance of inflicting Stun, which lasts for
- 2 seconds.
- × g: Critical hit roll 2 (1,5x), as defined by Guts (Guts/10). Successful
- Guts rolls are indicated by the word 'Guts' popping up over the subject.
- × d: Defend roll (0,5x)(Guts/10). Also applies to magic.
- × r: Random multiplier (1,03125; 1,0625; or 1,125).
- × Once again, the game features 'energy-based' attacks that ignore DFP
- and can't be blocked, but at the same time, they have no critical hit
- rolls or skill rolls (Renki, etc.).
- × Again, for the sake of convenience, the walkthrough and enemy quick
- list show enemy ATP values that have been divided by 3 and DFP values
- that have been multiplied by 3. This means you can calculate outgoing
- damage with ATP - DFP and incoming damage with 3(ATP - DFP).
- - Attacks can be blocked, but only from the front and when not stunned.
- Block rate seems to be calculated about the same way as it did in ToP,
- although there's no bonus for standing still:
- (tgtEva - Accy)/255
- - Since your Eva doesn't increase from leveling up, you won't be blocking
- much in the late game. Then again, late game enemies won't be blocking you
- much, either, unless you've made the mistake of increasing Feint, which
- is bugged and has the opposite of the intended effect.
- - The knockback and, by extension, hitstun caused by attacks depends on
- the attacker's Knockback value and the opponent's Weight value, like so:
- K = 256(k - w) - 128 [subpixels] [-128 subpx per frame]
- K: Initial knockback 1 pixel = 256 subpixels
- k: Knockback (Kb) Total knockback = (k - w)^2 - 0,5(k - w) px
- w: Weight (Wgt) Hitstun = 2(k - w) + 5 frames
- - After the knockback ends, subjects still need ~5 more frames to recover.
- - Hitting a wall may stop the knockback, but it won't affect hitstun.
- - On block, divide (k - w) by 2 (not rounded).
- - If the attack hits but deals no damage, no knockback or hitstun occurs
- (unless there's a critstun).
- - If a subject is pushed on to another subject, some of their momentum
- transfers over.
- - Most weapons have a Kb of 4, and all characters have 0 weight innately.
- Likewise, most enemies have 4 knockback and 0 weight. There doesn't seem
- to be any gear that would increase your weight.
- - Greater knockback makes multi-hit attacks less effective. Even when
- fighting heavier enemies, you should try to push the enemy against a wall
- or another subject to prevent knockback.
- - Magical damage involves a base power value and an Int modifier. Nearly
- all offensive magic is elemental.
- - Offensive magic is nowhere near as useful as it was in ToP. Since the
- battlefield is so much smaller and non-linear, mages are now much more
- vulnerable.
- - Milly's AI settings
- 1. Wareware o daiichi ni
- × Single target healing: below 2/3 HP.
- × Multi-target healing: more than one character below 2/3 HP.
- 2. Sentou o yuuri ni
- × Single target healing: below 2/3 HP.
- × Multi-target healing: more than one character below 2/3 HP.
- × Will also cast support and offensive magic.
- 3. Hodoyoku kangaete
- × Single target healing: below 1/6 HP
- × Multi-target healing: more than one character below 1/3 HP.
- × Will also cast support magic (with a varying delay) and occasionally
- offensive magic.
- 4. Jumon wa tsukawazu ni
- × Will not use magic.
- - Milly will not use a healing spell if the max HP of the target or targets
- is below the base power of the spell.
- - The random multiplier for healing spells is different than what's used
- in damage. At most, it increases the figure by about 1%.
- - In the menu, when using healing spells and items that affect a group,
- it will affect the characters currently displayed (4 at most).
- - Using items and casting magic involves a 2 second cooldown during which
- the character can't do anything. With mages, you can still queue up a
- spell during the cooldown.
- - Post-battle recovery is remaining Stm/8 (percent). Stamina consumption:
- 1 | Start of battle voice clip(s) (no, really)
- 1 | Manual movement (distance doesn't matter)
- 1 | Normal attack
- 2 | Waza
- 1 | Start casting magic
- 3 | Magic
- 1 | Get hit (dmg>0)
- 1 | Die
- - Subjects can move in any direction during battle, but executing an
- attack generally requires a subject to be on the same y-axis level as
- the target, and even your controlled character's movement is almost
- entirely automated. You can only move manually by pressing a button,
- moving a cursor, and then pressing the button again, but this is very
- slow. Even if you manage to use it to avoid an attack, it doesn't really
- give you an offensive advantage with faster enemies, whereas with slower
- enemies, you have the advantage by default (at least with characters who
- have a fast normal attack), so there's no need to evade.
- - Most of the attacks you can perform require you to be at a certain
- distance from the enemy. If the enemy moves, this 'activation point'
- moves as well. As such, if the enemy is faster than the character and
- moving towards them, the character will end up chasing the activation
- point often up until it reaches the edge of the screen, at which point
- it flips to the enemy's other side, causing the character to run straight
- into the enemy's loving arms. You hate to see it, but there's really
- not much you can do about it.
- - Press Cancel during battle to switch the character you control. Note,
- however, that Rati has no AI. He will simply stand there and do nothing.
- - The AI tends to ignore enemies that are already engaging another
- character. Even outside of that, the AI can be rather... disinterested
- in actually attacking. In a tight situation, you'll need to manually
- compensate and do some micro-managing.
- - Characters will automatically move away if they're standing too close
- to another subject.
- - As before, a number of enemies can inflict status ailments with their
- normal attacks (as noted in the enemy list). The roll is x/255, so a
- value of 50 means about 20% chance. An attack can inflict an ailment
- even if it deals no damage.
- - Poison: -10 HP every 4 seconds.
- - Paralysis / Petrification: Unable to act. Paralyzed characters can
- still be damaged.
- - Silence: Unable to cast magic. No enemy can inflict this.
- - Recovery points (inns, etc.) will not heal petrification.
- - When lethal damage occurs, a Guts roll is made that, if successful,
- allows the subject to remain alive with 1 HP.
- - The game features an Item Creation system accessed from the sub-menu
- in the inventory screen. Using one of the IC skills requires three
- things: materials, base skills and the right Talent.
- × Materials can be bought in stores, obtained on the field (only in
- limited quantities; there are no respawning procurement points),
- created using IC itself, and dropped by enemies.
- × Base skills are bought at skill shops. Once you have them, you have
- to spend SP on them. The amount of SP gained when leveling up is very
- roughly 1,5*Lv.
- × When a character joins the party, they'll start with a small number
- of random Talents. It's also possible to learn a Talent by using the
- skill that requires it. When this happens, the character gains 50 SP.
- Most characters have at least one Talent they can never learn.
- - Abilities not actually used for creating items (such as Ongaku) are
- accessed from the Tokugi menu.
- - The Sound Player allows you to listen to any music track, sound effect,
- and voice clip that you've triggered in the game. There are 568 items
- in total (47 music tracks, 87 sound effects and 434 voice clips).
- × The track that plays during the ending credits is not part of the
- collection.
- × Two of the music tracks are beta leftovers and can't actually be
- unlocked. A few sound effects may be beta leftovers as well, and a
- few are unobtainable due to bugs.
- × You can get the highest number of sounds in two playthroughs by
- getting the following optional characters:
- 1. Ashlay, Tinek, Perisie, Marvel
- 2. Cius, Fear, Joshua, Marvel -> Perisie
- × The Sound Collection save data is separate from the game save files,
- There's no in-game way to reset the collection data that I know of. As
- a result, if you're playing with a legit copy and want to start a fresh
- collection (possibly due to all the items unlocked by previous owners
- of the game), you'll have to remove the internal battery (or replace
- it if it's dead).
- Bugs / Glitches
- - Feint is supposed to give you a chance to reduce an enemy's Evade, but
- it does not function properly and actually has the opposite effect, making
- it much easier for you to get blocked. If you're on emulator and have
- made the mistake of increasing the skill, you can force it back down to
- 0 in the RAM. Maybe grab some of the unused items while you're at it. If
- you're using a flashcart, you can just copy the save files to your computer
- and do the edits there.
- - The escape speed formula checks the character's ID value instead of the
- character's level. This makes running away from battle *much* slower than
- intended. The formula is 4 + eLv/2 - ID/2 (ticks), where eLv is enemy
- levels combined and ID is ID values combined. One tick is 8 frames, and
- the minimum is 4 (unless a Mist is equipped), which is about a second.
- The ID values are, for what it's worth: Rati 1, Milly 2, Ronix 4, Iria 5,
- Cius 6, Joshua 7, Tinek 8, Marvel 9, Ashlay 10, Perisie 11, Fear 12. Enemy
- levels can be seen in the encounter list.
- - The Magic Mist reduces the time it takes to run away from battle, but it
- also gives you the Reverse Doll effect, only without breaking. It can only
- activate once per battle, though, so it's not like it makes you immortal.
- - Once you've equipped a Mist accessory, you'll continue getting the
- (intended) effect even if you unequip it. Sometimes you might get the
- combined effect of both Mists even without touching them. Resetting the
- game should clear the effect (although it does compensate for the issues
- with the escape speed formula).
- - If a character is petrified and cured mid-battle, there's a chance they
- won't respond to any input for the rest of the battle.
- - If you learn a new Talent while playing the violin, the game has a
- good chance of freezing in most locations. It's least likely to happen
- when you're on the Mua continent fields.
- - Elemental resistance provided by equipment is once again buggy. This
- time it's a little worse, as there seem to be several items that cause it.
- - All spells cast by an AI-controlled character equipped with an Emerald
- Ring will only cost 2 MP. With a Fairy Ring, it's only 1. While the
- accessories work properly outside of battle and when spells are cast
- manually, I'd still recommend against using them.
- - The Silver Ring is supposed to negate physical damage from undead
- enemies (with a 5% chance of breaking), but the enemy type check doesn't
- work properly, as a result of which the ring negates physical damage from
- *all* enemies. Again, I'd recommend against taking advantage of it.
- - The Heal Ring is supposed to periodically heal 3% of a character's HP
- when moving on the field, but it doesn't work.
- - When switching weapons during arena battles, the previously equipped
- weapon may turn into the weapon you switched to. Might happen outside
- of the arena as well if the conditions are right.
- - When an enemy casts Wounds on you, it never actually hits. If there's
- an enemy close enough, it'll hit them instead.
- - The MP cost of waza is shown incorrect for characters in the reserve.
- - Hayakuchi will not show up on your skill list if you haven't also got
- both Sentou Lv1 and Lv2.
- - The Item Slot 22 bug will turn the item in slot 22 into either Lavender
- or Sazaetsuboyaki (likely defined by the pre-existing item's secondary
- ID value, as Lavender is 05-00 and Tsuboyaki is 05-01). It's very common
- and always seems to trigger at some point during the events on the Astral
- continent, although it varies slightly.
- - Ron's normal attack may not work properly at the beginning of battle.
- - The effects of the Upstart and Treasure cards have been mixed.
- - There are plenty of issues with graphical layers, where the character
- sprite will display on top of a tile, even though it's not supposed to.
- It's mainly apparent when riding the Bunny, whose sprite is larger than
- Rati's. In any case, it's purely cosmetic.
- - Once, Dispel missed the target, apparently because Perisie was doing
- Shining Dance.
- - Once, Protection reduced Perisie's DFP to 0.
- - Not really a bug, but they actually managed to misspell tri-Ace as
- 'try-Ace' on the label on the cart.

- - When you choose to start a new game, you'll be given the chance to name
- the main character, Ratix (or just Rati). You can change any character's
- name in the status screen.
- - Once you're in control, I recommend you take a moment to customize
- the settings. I use Message Speed 1 and set Confirm to Y. I also turn
- auto-equip off (in the equip menu). The voice acting can't be turned off,
- which is unfortunate, as your characters will not act or respond to
- commands until they're done with their quotes. The fastest enemies will
- be able to use this as an opportunity to land a free hit.
- - If you're not satisfied with the Talents Rati starts with and don't
- mind going through the intro again, you could reset and start a new game
- to re-roll them. He'll always start with Originality, though, and that's
- really the most important one.
- - Outside, you'll fight 3 groups of thieves. The boss (16 xp, 190 F)
- hits hard and fast. Just keep the pressure on. If all else fails, use
- the Flare Bomb.
- - The chest with the Talisman is mostly hidden from view.
- - You can rest in your bed (until you trigger the next event).
- - After some events, you are to head north to Cool (you could go there
- even before you're supposed to, but there's nothing there yet). You can't
- go to the beach or enter Rati's house at this point.

- - Unless you're trying to fill your voice collection, I suggest you
- remove Dorn from the active party (Senjutsu -> Irekae). He's only a TPC
- and will soon leave your party. You could also remove his equipment.
- × Two of Dorn's clips can be elusive: 148 (start of battle against
- high level enemy) and 150 (end of tough battle). Best way to get 148
- is to run away from all battles to keep your levels low (Rati and Dorn
- will be Lv3, Milly Lv1) and then trigger battles at the very beginning
- of Mt. Metox (before the Fellworm event battle). For 150, let the battle
- drag on for a while and take a good amount of damage.
- - The game does not employ the kind of world map that they used in ToP.
- Instead, you have 'the field' - fairly linear paths that connect different
- areas, mostly towns. When you're on the field, you can save at anytime,
- and you'll typically see a rough map of the continent (toggled on/off
- with Start).
- - The chest with the Ruby is mostly hidden from view, located in the area
- just before Cool.

- - At the summit, you'll trigger the longest series of events in the game
- as you meet Ronix and Iria (do *not* look at the screen when teleporting
- occurs).
- - If you're planning on using Iria in your final party, I strongly
- recommend you re-roll Ron's Talents until he starts with Originality.
- To do so, save before triggering the scene at the summit. After going
- through the events on the Calnus, you'll need to restart from this save
- if he doesn't start with it. This could take a few attempts, but, trust
- me, it's still faster and easier than learning it through IC. (18 minutes
- per attempt)

- - If you have Ashlay or Joshua, Marvel *will* join your party. If you

- - Marvel only has a 10% chance of starting with Originality. Without
- Originality, she's stuck with her default weapon (280 ATP), as her only
- other weapon is her ultimate weapon that's obtained through Customize.
- If you're planning on using her in your active party (which I wouldn't
- recommend, as I do consider her to be the worst fighter in the game),
- you may want to keep resetting and going through the reunion scene
- until she starts with it. Learning it through grinding is a little
- tricky, but nothing exceedingly hard.
- - Ron's spells: Firebolt, Grave, Wind Blade, Shadow Bolt, Eruption,
- Earth Glaive, Thunder Bolt, Wounds.
- - Ron is the one mage in the game solely dedicated to offensive magic.
- However, as I've already mentioned, offensive magic is now *very*
- suboptimal mainly due to the smaller battlefield, which leaves mages
- much more vulnerable.
- - Indeed, Ron would be more useful as a ranged fighter. If you disable
- all his spells, he'll use his bow quite actively on the first AI setting.
- Even then, a melee fighter is preferable, as Ron can't attack quickly
- enough to properly stunlock enemies.
- - It's time for some IC. And by 'some,' I mean 5-15 hours, depending
- on how high you're aiming. You may want to have something playing in
- the background (like, Hololive, for instance) to provide some additional
- stimuli during the lengthy process.
- - When I have to do resetting, I just Mandrake my party instead of
- actually resetting (although resetting is indeed a tad faster) and I
- already have my reserve characters knocked out.
- - Keep in mind, in some cases, the item you create may be unidentified.
- It could be the failed stuff too. Leave the useless junk unidentified,
- so you can easily tell them apart.
- - Start by learning Talents that have at least a 1,5% chance of being
- discovered. That's a good point to draw the line at. 1% Talents take
- a good while to learn, often around 30 minutes or so. At that point,
- it's really not worth it anymore (you'd be better off just spending
- that time leveling up). I mean, you can still do it if you're really
- obsessed about it and have the patience.
- - Skill level and Talents are not (much of) a factor when composing music.
- - When grinding the music Talents, you need to leave the Ongaku menu
- after each attempt, but you don't need to play a different composition.
- - Likewise, when grinding Yasei no Kan, you need to leave the Scout menu
- after each attempt, but you also need to actually change the setting.
- - Yasei no Kan and the music Talents are the fastest to grind (and also
- cost nothing), so I'd say 0,5% is still worth going for with those.
- - Doubutsuzuki is the slowest Talent to grind, so I wouldn't bother with
- that for anyone other than Milly (who likely started with it) and maybe
- Cius/Ashlay. If you learn it, you get it just as you send out the pigeon.
- The bird isn't coming back (not without the Talent), so you just keep
- sending them.
- - You may need to increase Bitekikankaku to Lv1 before maxing out Doryoku,
- but that's totally fine.
- - You'll want Iron to be the first mineral on the Saiku list. That means
- you'll have to either sell your Rubies or equip something to create an
- empty slot.
- - Even with the SP from the new Talents, you'll likely need to get a few
- levels to max out Doryoku (more than a few for Milly). Keeping Milly
- alive here can be tricky. Use the Astral Shift formation with Rati in
- the second slot. This puts you in the best position to intercept the
- enemy if one heads for Milly right at the beginning of battle.
- - Increasing Ron's Doryoku won't be necessary if all you're going to do
- with him is create Iria's ultimate weapon.
- - You'll want to use Shippitsu to create skill books to save SP. Use
- Iria or Ashlay. If they didn't start with Bunsai, they can easily learn
- it. The books will allow you to increase 16 skills up to Lv7 without
- spending a single SP (except for the author, since a skill needs to be
- above Lv0 for the character to be able to write about it.
- - The last level of Bunpitsu requires 50-60 SP, which is pretty steep.
- You should make do with Lv9.
- - Not every character needs to boost all their skills. All you really
- need is one character who's proficient in a given field. Here's how I
- split the work myself:
- Iria | Shippitsu, Art, Saiku, Ongaku, Kantei
- Milly | Renkin
- Ratix | Katanakaji
- - Don't forget that skill levels are rounded up.
- - IC costs quite a bit of money, but it also provides the answer to that
- issue. Get Iria's Art to Lv7, then use Magic Colors to duplicate Rainbow
- Diamonds. At Lv7, the success rate is roughly 15%. If you can't afford
- to buy a whole bunch of Magic Colors, you'll just have to keep re-loading
- after a few attempts. A single Rainbow Diamond sells for 25k, which is
- pretty nice, but we want to move to the next level sooner rather than later.
- - Dupe yourself 6 Rainbow Diamonds, then use Saiku to try to create a
- Magical Drop, which sells for 500 000 fol. Spend some SP to get your
- Saiku level a bit higher. Lv7 would be nice, but 6 should work too. If
- you happen to get a Dream Crown, you should keep that. Otherwise, just
- keep re-loading. Do *not* use up your last Rainbow Diamond.
- - Selling a couple of Magical Drops will easily allow you to cover the
- IC costs. You could also go pick up a Violin and a Clarinet in Ionis.
- Instruments can indeed be duplicated, so duping the Violin is another
- option for procuring funds.
- - Using the Violin makes discovering Talents a bit easier (by doubling
- the odds), but it's tricky to use, since it can easily crash the game.
- Crashing seems least likely to happen if you use it in the Mua fields.
- As such, if you're interested in using it, you should wait until you
- reach Sylvarant, after which you can return to Mua more easily.
- - You can use the Clarinet to fight the optional super boss, Gabriel
- Celesta. She's worth great Exp if you can beat her, but I suggest you
- save it for later.
- - Skill books will get Milly's (or Joshua's) Renkin to Lv7. You'll want
- to get it to Lv10 (so you'll gain access to Ori), but there's no rush,
- since you can already create great weapons with the minerals you've
- found (Rune Metal, Meteorite, Moonite), and you can just duplicate some
- of those (as seen on the chart in the IC file).
- - Katanakaji can be used to create some *very* powerful weapons. It
- doesn't matter who's doing it; any character can work with weapons of
- any kind. Either way, Lv8 should work fine, relatively speaking. Feel
- free to push it to Lv9 if you have the SP. Even at Lv10, you'd have to
- do a lot of re-loading. The success rates are around 5%. Duping the
- base items so you can try multiple times before resetting is an option,
- but really not necessary. You should still dupe them, so you'll always
- have at least one.
- - Right, so, first you need to create +1 weapons (Rati's already got
- one if you fought Darth Widow). Just combine any of the weapons sold
- around these parts (or back in Otanim) with Silver. The formula is not
- exact, but this is clearly ideal.
- - Once you have a +1 (or +2) weapon, you can combine it with one of the
- 6 more exotic minerals, with each mineral producing a different result
- (if successful). These are the weapons I'd recommend:
- Rati | Duel Sword (+1/+2 + Meteorite)
- Iria/Peri| Pain Cestus (+1/+2 + Damascus)
- Ashlay | Duel Sword (+1/+2 + Meteorite)
- Cius | Meteor Strike (+1/+2 + Meteorite)
- Fear | Element Edge (+1/+2 + Meteorite)
- Tinek | Mech Halberd (+1/+2 + Damascus)
- - To get the ultimate weapons, you have to use Customize, which is not
- only character-specific, but also very costly to level up, since two of
- the three base skills don't have skill books. Instead of spending around
- 1000 SP to get it to a high level, you should just force it at Lv3, or
- maybe Lv4 (which only costs an additional 40-60 SP). At those levels,
- the odds are pretty terrible (something like 2%), but if you create
- multiple copies of the base weapon (say, 5), it's very doable. If you
- don't want to go through the trouble, that's fine. The Katanakaji weapons
- I recommended above will work just fine.
- - Customize requires Originality, which the character will ideally just
- start with. If you have to learn it through grinding, you may want to
- get the Violin involved, and you definitely need to create multiple
- copies of the base weapon.
- - You can only create a few copies of the base weapon for Ashlay/Cius,
- since Mythril is in limited supply. At Lv7, you should manage with just
- one copy.
- - Not all custom weapons are all that great. Rati's Aura Blade may have
- the highest ATP, but it's Light-elemental and has no Accy or Crit bonus.
- You should probably just stick to the Duel Sword. You can switch to the
- Force Sword later if you want an Accy boost. The Silvanse is a good choice
- in the post-game.
- - Tinek's custom weapon, Houtengeki, is Thunder-elemental, but it's still
- the best choice outside of the arena and final dungeon. It also has 6 Kb,
- which makes multi-hit attacks harder to use effectively. There are three
- contenders for Tinek's best non-elemental weapon, as seen below. The
- Whirlwind is the weakest, but it's the only one with a Crit bonus. The
- Mech Halberd isn't quite as powerful as the Dragon Lance, but it has a
- better Accy bonus.
- ATP Accy Crit Kb
- Whirlwind | 500 | 10 | 50 |4| LSp1/2 + Meteorite
- Mech Halberd | 600 | 50 | - |4| LSp1/2 + Damascus
- Dragon Lance | 650 | 10 | - |4| LSp1/2 + Rune Metal
- - You shouldn't bother with Fear's custom weapon, Deathbringer, either.
- Not only is it merely 50 points higher than the Element Edge, but it's
- not even her strongest weapon (you'll get that in a story event later).
- Also, the Bloody Sword is harder to create than the other base weapons,
- so, yeah, it's just not worth the trouble.
- - The base weapons for Customize are:
- Rati | Silvance (+1/+2 + Orichalcum)
- Iria | Metal Fang (+1/+2 + Rune Metal) (customized by Ronix)
- Tinek | Spinning Spear (+1/+2 + Orichalcum)
- Ashlay | Mythril Sword (+1/+2 + Mythril)
- Cius | Silver Sword (+1/+2 + Mythril)
- Fear | Bloody Sword (+1/+2 + Rune Metal)
- Perisie | Neko Fang (+1/+2 + Orichalcum)
- Marvel | Rainbow Diamond
- Milly | Magical Persia (can be duped)
- - I suppose if you don't want to completely blow all the challenge away,
- you could arbitrarily refrain from using IC weapons at least for the time
- being. You definitely want the strong stuff for the endgame, though.
- - Here are some accessories you should create using Saiku. You'll need
- to reset if you don't get what you want (except with Iron and Silver).
- I'd give the Star Ruby and RD five tries, more for the others. Either
- way, once you've created one, you can (usually) just duplicate it.
- Iron | Stone Check
- Sapphire | Paraly Check
- Ruby | Berserk Ring
- Star Ruby | Star Necklace
- Silver | Silver Ankh (can't be duped)
- Rb Diamond | Dream Crown
- - Dupe yourself a whole bunch of Stone Checks, since they'll be breaking
- on you.
- - The Dream Crown is a great helm that every character can equip. I
- recommend getting those for Iria, Tinek and Milly.
- - Nothing I'd really recommend with Chougou, other than maybe the Fruit
- Pot (Mandrake + Artemis Leaf)(heals 45% HP & MP).
- - I wouldn't bother doing anything with Chouri either. Food only heals HP
- unless it's the character's favorite food, in which case it fully heals
- their HP and MP. That's pretty nice, but the problem is you can't dupe
- food, so it's pretty slow to produce. MP shouldn't be much of an issue,
- though, given that you'll soon get MP regeneration and how the IC weapons
- take out the enemy quite hastily.
- - If you indeed maxed out Doryoku, put some SP into Nintai and Konjou
- as well to learn Shugyou, which will give you a minor Exp boost (not so
- minor at Lv10, but that'll have to wait a while).
- - Maxing out Seibutsugaku and Seishingaku from Lv7 will give you 510 HP
- and 51 MP. They're about 250 SP each. I wouldn't consider these a high
- priority.
- - Going forward, the two highest priorities will be maxing out Renkin
- and the fighting style skills (ie. Edarl Kenjutsu, Kakutoujutsu, etc.).
- Maxing out a character's fighting style takes 456-549 SP. The immediate
- effect is that it will decrease the MP cost of battle skills (1 point
- at levels 2, 5, 8 and 10). Once you've obtained some ougi teachings,
- it also makes it possible to learn new waza (the ougis show up in the
- Skill menu, although you can't allocate SP into them). While the IC
- weapons will allow you to cut through your opponents quite easily for
- now, unless you also get the most powerful Ougi skills, you could still
- end up having trouble in the late game.

- - A fairly difficult battle even with IC weapons. This is a pincer
- encounter with the boss on the left and the Whispers on the right.
- - The Peryton belongs in the Cockatrice family, who are among the most
- dangerous enemies in the game. They have two attacks: 1. They rise up
- and send a shockwave that hits all characters in a large area (1,0x
- damage). Mainly of concern because it has a chance of inflicting
- petrification. 2. They shoot five feather projectiles (1,5x damage).
- It usually hits a single character three times.
- - The Whispers (3000 HP) don't hit very hard, but they're fast and

- Special: Default (Tinek):
- Shichisei (Ougi) Kon
- PC: Budougi
- Tinek Lv20 Sandals
- - Have Rati beat Rank D at the arena, and Tinek [Tiniiku] will join the
- party (first dialog option). Reset until he starts with Originality.
- × Rati will indeed always fight Tinek at Rank D even if you don't have
- an empty slot for him.
- - Beat Rank C as well to obtain Shichisei. This allows Rati to learn
- three new waza, of which Shichisei Souhazan is quite devastating. Get
- it asap. Use Souhazan constantly (give him the Mental Ring) until he
- learns it. Besides Shichisei Souhazan, I might also use the occasional
- Suzaku Shougekiha.
- - Likewise, Cius's Shichisei Souhazan is also one of his best moves,
- although I'd focus more on Genbu Shourai, since it can easily hit
- multiple enemies and has a lower MP cost. Shichisei Raimeiken is also
- worth considering.
- - Rank C also gives you a Star Guard, which is the best shield in the
- game and can be equipped by anyone. The shield is notable not for its
- defensive capabilities but rather for its offensive potential, as it
- emits damaging particles when the character blocks or when someone
- merely bumps into them. The damage varies greatly, but even when it's
- low, it can be absolutely devastating in the event of a feedback loop,
- where the character is very close to the enemy so that the particles
- themselves end up triggering the particles over and over again. If it
- feels too powerful, you could just choose not to use them.
- - There are 4 characters in total who can obtain Shichisei by beating
- Rank C: Rati, Tinek, Marvel, and Cius (Ashlay has it by default).
- Rati
- - Raimeiken -> Shichisei Raimeiken
- - Senkouken -> Shichisei Senkouken
- - Souhazan -> Shichisei Souhazan
- Cius
- - Souhazan -> Shichisei Souhazan
- - Raimeiken -> Shichisei Raimeiken
- - Gurenken -> Shichisei Gurenken
- - Tinek can easily learn Kiyou na Yubisaki and Yasei no Kan.
- - When fighting at the Arena, you'll be provided with some healing items
- you can use during the challenge (2x Sweet Pot, Mix Syrup, Blackberry),
- as you can't use your own this time around. The character will be placed
- in the first slot regardless of their slot prior to starting the challenge.
- I recommend the Tri-Shift 2 formation. There are two possible rewards for
- each rank (listed in the misc. file). Which one you get depends on which
- character you used.
- - The rewards for Ranks B and A are very underwhelming, but feel free to
- give it a shot anyway. The last enemy you fight in Rank A is a Beholder,
- who can easily end your arena challenge within two seconds thanks to
- petrification. These guys were nasty in ToP, but now they're even worse.
- Rati, in particular, is at a disadvantage when fighting them, as he simply
- doesn't have a short range move fast enough to hit them before they hit
- you (unlike Iria, for instance, who can pull that off with Ouka Hakkeshou).
- Fireballs (Shoureiha, Kikoushou) aren't fast enough, either. The only safe
- option is to spam Kuuhazan from a distance.
- - Incidentally, Tinek doesn't really have to worry about Beholders so long
- as he sticks to his normal attacks. Tinek's hitbox is a bit unoptimized,
- apparently, as the Beholders (and a few other enemies) don't actually get
- close enough to hit him. Unless he uses something that puts him closer
- (even Suigetsu does that, even though it looks identical to a normal
- attack), he simply won't get hit.
- - In order to get Perisie, you need to go all the way back to Clato. If
- you want to get Fear instead (a very good character, no doubt), then just
- pick her up at Astral.
- - This can be a tough choice. Fear uses ranged attacks almost exclusively,
- hence her damage is nearly always multiplied by 1,5. Her selection of
- waza doesn't have anything exceptionally impressive and includes only
- one energy-based attack. However, her normal attack is so good, it doesn't
- really matter. It can hit multiple enemies twice, sometimes more than
- twice. She can't match the other fighters in terms of ATP, but getting
- her Renki to Lv10 helps.
- - I usually get Perisie myself due to the fact that I already have three
- great characters. Plus, then I'll be able to get the Bunny Whistle as a
- bonus.
- ¤~~~~~~¤ Clato ¤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¤
- PC: Default (Perisie):
- Perisie Lv5 Somatsu na Bikini 50 SP
- - Equip the Ocarina, save the game and start a PA. Talk to Milly and choose
- the third dialog option. Next, play the Ocarina (just hit Confirm while not
- facing anyone). After the event, Perisie will join. If she doesn't start
- with Originality, reset and try again. She can't learn it that easily.
- × Note that you can't get Perisie if you have fewer than 6 characters.
- - Perisie can easily learn Kiyou na Yubisaki, Doubutsuzuki and Yasei no Kan.
- - Perisie starts with 50 SP, which is conveniently just enough to learn
- Customize. Customize a Neko Fang (Knuckle +1/2 + Orichalcum) to get her
- ultimate weapon, the Q-Kyoku Punch. It gives her only a minor Crit bonus,
- but the alternatives are so much weaker it's still clearly her best choice.
- It does have a great Accy bonus (which doesn't really mean much if you're
- crippled by Feint).
- - You'll need to level up your new characters if you want them to stay
- alive. Building up more than 4 characters is indeed somewhat troublesome,
- so sooner or later you should decide on your final party of 4 characters.
- In the end, though, you only need to choose 2. Rati is completely mandatory
- and Milly is virtually mandatory. I don't see anyone surviving the rest
- of the game without her.
- - If you do bring in one of the new characters, you should be able to
- level them up nicely in the Haikou. Tell them to stay back and only engage
- when approached. If they die, you can just visit the recovery point outside.
- - Also, if you haven't gotten a bunch of Stone Checks yet, make them now.
- Petrification will continue to be a grave issue for... as long as you keep
- playing the game.
- - Again, I'd like to remind you that the Feint skill is bugged and has the
- opposite of the intended effect. If you've made the mistake of increasing
- it, you'll see your characters getting blocked even by low level enemies
- who should have no chance of doing so.
- - Perisie's End of Battle C voice clip (387)(battle against higher level
- enemy) is fairly uncommon, so you should get that in the Haikou (if you
- care) while your levels are still low enough. Rati can probably handle
- the enemies on his own, so just bring in some other lower level characters
- as well. While you're at it, check if some other characters are missing
- Start of Battle voice clips as well. And help yourself to some of that
- Dwarven gear.

- - Fear's attacks are almost entirely ranged, physical attacks. She throws

- the enemy on their way back as well if the enemy isn't pushed back, giving
- you even more hits. She gets no crit roll, though, and only has one energy-
- based attack.
- - There's some issue with Fear's block check when she attacks enemies from

- - Have the ship in Sylvarant take you to the small island where the portal
- to the Makai is. You'll fight the bosses at the beginning.
- [Boss]
- - 15 600 HP, 210 DFP, 160 Eva, 409 ATP, 8000 xp, 6000 Fol
- - Quite an easy boss. Again, you can go ahead and replace Milly with
- Ashlay. This should be the last boss where you need to include him.

- [Boss]
- - 15 600 HP, 210 DFP, 160 Eva, 409 ATP, 8000 xp, 6000 Fol
- - The Force Sword is Fear's strongest weapon and also a good choice for
- Rati if you want an Accy boost. The Void-element won't be an issue.
- -- Sylvarant --
- Special: Kouryuu Ougi
- - At this point, you can get Kouryuu, assuming Ashlay's affinity is high
- enough. If it is, he'll talk to you when you start a PA and he won't be
- in front of the castle as he normally is. You'll instead find him in the
- castle, where he'll give you the ougi.
- - In case you forgot, you were supposed to have Ashlay present in every
- boss battle and make sure he never dies.

- - Death Charona: 800 HP
- - 10 012 xp, 6060 Fol in total
- - He can hit you pretty fast, but at least he can't petrify you.
- - This is the (soft) point of no return. After fighting the next boss,
- you'll end up in the final dungeon and won't be able to leave until
- you've beaten the game.
- [Boss: Asmodeus]
- - 28 000 HP, 1200 DFP, 130 Eva, 434 ATP, W:V, 21 000 xp, 10 000 Fol
- - His defense is very high, so you'll need to use attacks that can cut
- through that.
- - The battle is split into four phases depending on his current HP.
- 1. (75%-100%): Shoots a ball of energy.
- 2. (50%-74%): Launches three explosive balls.
- 3. (25%-49%): No physical attacks. Casts Cure Light (~900), Explode
- (~1000 pod) and Word of Death.
- 4. (<25%): Shoots a laser beam (560 base).
- - He attacks relentlessly (except in phase 3). This makes phases 2 and
- 4 the most dangerous, but if you just maintain the advantage from the
- preceding phases, you should be fine.
- - After a fairly long scene, you'll be in the final dungeon.

- Bosses: Jie Revorse, Neo Revorse
- - The enemies here are really tough - unless you're using the best
- weapons and waza (Shichisei Souhazan, Ouka Hakkeshou, Suigetsuryoudanha).
- - Terminate Medusa Eyes with extreme prejudice. They always start off
- behind some other enemies, and it's actually optimal to attack the
- enemies in your way, since otherwise you're likely to bump into those
- enemies as you try to attack the Medusa Eye and, thus, get interrupted.
- Also consider switching between characters and doing some micro-managing.
- Check your gear after a beholder battle to see if you need to equip a
- new Stone Check.
- - Dupe some Hermit Helms. It's strong, gives you +20 Evade, and anyone
- can equip it.
- - The Marvel Sword can't be blocked. Worth considering if you're stuck
- with a high level Feint.
- - There are 5 switches near the second save point. Hit them in counter-
- clockwise order starting from the northwest to proceed.
- - Soon after that, you'll find the third and final save point.
- [Boss] FWTIELDV
- - 31 000 HP, 900 DFP, 250 Eva, 740 ATP RRRRRRR
- - Again, you're looking at very high defense. Casting Growth is an option.
- - If you have Milly's AI set to 2 or 3, make sure you've got Delay disabled.
- Otherwise, she'll be casting it constantly in vain.
- - His force field attack (3060 base) is likely the only Thunder-elemental
- enemy attack in the game.
- |
- [Boss] FWTIELDV
- - 32 000 HP, 900 DFP, 200 Eva, 534 ATP RRRRRRR
- - He can shield himself to nullify all damage. When he's below 50% HP,
- he'll use two techniques during which he's also shielded. One of them
- is a laser blast that hits all characters (2080). It's Dark-elemental,
- so equipping Silver Ankhs will allow you to nullify it. The other one
- has Jie heal himself for 5500 HP.
- × The laser blast usually uses voice clip 461, but sometimes 459.
- - His ATP is lower this time, but his attacks are far more dangerous.
- You may need Protection here.
- - After the ending, a star will be added to your save file. This means
- that you can use Oracle to warp to the Oracle Room. From there, you can
- warp to either Tatoroi or the end of Revorse Tower. When you warp to
- Tatoroi, you'll be right in front of the entrance to the Shichisei no
- Doukutsu (Cave of Seven Stars).
- - Before taking on the post-game dungeon, I suggest you fight Gabe a
- bunch of times for a quick level boost. Go for Lv75. At that point,
- you'll be close to max HP and well on your way to maxing out the combat
- skills (except Feint, Shinkuuha, Mekuri, Hangeki). If you're trying to
- complete the voice collection, you'll also need to boost Ron and Joshua
- to Lv50 at some point. And you *will* need to complete Shichisei no
- Doukutsu with Joshua in your party (not active party, just in general)
- in order to get his Extension voice clip.
- - Gabe can drop two items: Gouka na Ken and Gouka na Yoroi. The Gouka
- na Yoroi might actually be preferable over the Reflex, since it also
- gives you 30 Evade. Elemental resistance certainly isn't very useful
- in the post-game dungeon (at least not after the first 10 floors).
- - Also, dupe some Reverse Dolls and Protect Rings.
- -- Oracle Room --
- Item: Magical Jar (Unique)
- - There's a hidden chest in the Level 10 room. The Magical Jar will
- randomly give you items as you move around (doesn't have to be an area
- with encounters). The problem is the odds are absolutely abysmal at
- 0,003% (2/65 535) per step, so it takes ages for it to trigger and even
- when it does, it'll likely just give you junk.
- ¤~~~~~~¤ Shichisei no Doukutsu ¤~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~¤
- Boss: 2× Looter (& Resphina)
- - There are no save points in this dungeon.
- - The dungeon mostly consists of a number of different floor layouts
- that are reused throughout the dungeon. Most of them are quite small.
- As such, even if you warp out, it really doesn't take long to get back
- to where you were.
- - Some floors have multiple paths leading down, with only one of them
- being the correct path, and the others leading to dead ends (possibly
- with treasure).
- - You'll start encountering new enemies after B10. Given the enemies' HP
- figures, now's a good time to start using those Berserk Rings, even if
- they slash your DFP in half. You won't need Stone Checks between B11-B20,
- but do make sure you put them back on below B20.
- - The double Dark Stalker encounter (below B20) is your main concern.
- Hopefully, you won't get too many of those. If both of them end up
- using their spear launch attack about the same time, you could be
- looking at two, maybe even three, dead characters. Instead of going
- too defensive, just try to take out one of them as quickly as you can.
- That'll increase your odds substantially.
- - The only way to get more Elven Powder, Witch Powder, or Might Potions
- is by duping.

- Traps
- B19: 2x Demonic Eye back attack with you starting at 1 HP.
- × Really not all that hard. This'll be a regular encounter below B20
- (minus the HP thing). You just need to take the advantage with a long
- range skill (like Muhyoutoukon) and keep the pressure on.
- B29a: 2x Evil Terratos with you starting at 1 HP.
- B29b: 2x Dark Stalkers with you starting at 1 HP.
- × Equip some Reverse Dolls for this one, since you might take a hit
- before Milly pulls off the heal. Better give her a Star Necklace.
- De-equipping Berserk Rings isn't really worth considering. You'll
- take a bit less damage (2000 pod per hit vs 3000), but if you're hit
- with a bunch of spears, it won't make a difference.
- × I believe the succubi are among the enemies the Silver Ring is
- actually supposed to work on, so that's another option.
- - Do note that the traps will *not* disappear. Get the items and don't
- ever go into those rooms again.
- - You'll find the boss on the lowest level (B30). This is the single
- hardest battle in the entire game, one where preparation, RNG, and
- execution all play a big part. You'll want to warp out and save before
- trying it. Or just save state. Maybe keep a save state, where you can
- fight them again.
- [Boss]
- - 32 000 HP, 750 DFP, 200 Eva, 1134 ATP, 150 Accy, 256 Mov, 4 Kb, 0 Wgt
- - Use the best weapons (Silvanse, Kaiser Knuckle, Houtengeki, Force
- Sword, Q-Kyoku Punch, Cius Special, Murasama Blade) and the usual waza.
- Rati should have a 4x Kuuhazan chain. Maybe throw in one Kokuryuu if
- you have that.
- - Equip Berserk Rings and Reverse Dolls for Rati and another fighter.
- The third fighter should have a Piyohan (or maybe a Protect Ring) and
- a Reverse Doll. Milly should have a Star Necklace and a Protect Ring
- (a Reverse Doll won't do much in her case).
- - Use the Linear Motion formation with Rati in slot 1, Milly in slot 2,
- and the other BR fighter in slot 4.

- - The Looters have a high critical hit rate (78%), so it's easy to get
- stunned and then maimed to death without getting any chance to attack.
- The worst part is, their attack is so fast that, unless you have the
- frame advantage, they'll interrupt pretty much any close range attack
- you throw at them. If you're lucky, they'll just stand around and let
- you take the lead. That's almost necessary for your survival. They can
- even interrupt your chains, but that's not very common.
- - The Resphina is of a different color than the one you can encounter
- normally, but it's still the same (25 700 HP). A proto-EQ, I suppose,
- but not much of a threat. The worst thing she can do is go harass Milly
- while you're pre-occupied with the Looters.
- - As soon as you gain control of Rati, start a Kuuhazan chain and
- immediately switch to Milly to cast Haste. If Looter A goes for Rati
- right away, you have only a handful of frames to start the chain. If
- you're late, you'll start a SR chain instead, which will inevitably get
- interrupted. If you're not stunned, try to start a SR chain or maybe
- use a normal attack to try to score a lucky crit-stun. If you fail or
- you got stunned by that first hit, you'll need someone to come and
- assist you. If no one's available, I hope it's because they're too
- busy annihilating the other enemies.
- - Micro-managing your party is highly recommended. If you see someone
- finishing their chain or otherwise ready to act, take control of them
- to issue them an action. In particular, you want to assist characters
- that might be at a disadvantage. Besides that, switching targets could
- help, as your previous target might chase you and walk in front of you
- from the side while you're mid-chain. This could happen at the very
- beginning of the battle if fighter 4 goes for Looter A, and Looter B
- chases after them. In any case, once one of the Looters is down, your
- odds increase drastically.
- - If you find yourself in a situation where one AI fighter has Looter B
- locked down and the other AI fighter is idle, consider moving the fighter
- behind Looter A for a pincer attack.
- - In a worst case scenario, the Looters strike down two fighters about
- the same time. Recovering from that is unlikely.
- - The Reverse Dolls may or may not help. After a character is killed,
- the Looter might just stick around and strike you down again right away.
- - Here's a bunch of attempts to give you an idea on what to expect:
- End of file.
