- Too asleep to wake, too awake to sleep,
- I drift, closed-eyed, over the void of the deep.
- Spontaneous visions explode before me
- So mundane at this point they manage to bore me.
- Too often the blackness is interrupted
- By a flash of open eyelids, erupted.
- I contemplate histories, quickly receding,
- And in my excitement, my eyes soon start needing,
- To be consciously closed again. Never able to settle
- For sleep or wakefulness, I have failed this test of mettle.
- In the back of my mind constant is the awareness
- And profound is the knowledge of its unfairness
- That my mind won't let me sleep and my body won't let me wake.
- I want to give it all up, for goodness sake.
