Email to Ted Cruz Regarding Vape Ban

Dear Senator Cruz, I would like to ask you to show your support for vaping and electronic cigarettes by speaking out and/or voting against this egregious proposal by the president to completely ban vaping, vaping liquids, e-cigarettes and related products. Electronic cigarettes are often used as smoking cession aids and have work fantastically to get people off of traditional tobacco. According to the CDC, 480,000 people die per year from tobacco usage. So far, the death toll from vaping has been 6 people. Although this is a tragic loss of life, it is not any kind of major health crisis that requires the complete banning of an entire category of products. The vaping industry is earning upwards of $10 billion per year, which, as you can imagine, creates many jobs.

I believe regulation of the vaping liquids being sold should be the priority for the FDA, not outright banning them. The liquids should be tested for purity, potency, and contaminants. Second, a non-governmental group like UL should vet and verify these vaping devices to make sure the devices are safe and do not pose a health risk to its users and the public.

In terms of children getting their hands on vaping devices, a thorough system should be in place to verify the age of the purchaser. In any shop that sells vaping products I have visited, ID is always requested to ensure the user is of legal age to use the product.  However, online, this process could be improved to ensure underage individuals aren't abusing this system to procure nicotine related products. Some type of system - either designed by the government, such as the FDA, or by the industry itself to verify ID would significantly reduce the problem of teenage vaping.

I know you believe in small government and ensuring that the government does not infringe on the personal liberties of it's citizens. I hope you will take a stand against this outrageous proposal to completely ban vaping, electronic cigarettes and flavored nicotine liquids.
