  1. I want to just say that I have nothing against honorifics (I did use them at the beginning lol),
  2. but, for our release, I don't want to use them (anymore).
  3. Here's why:
  4. - They make writing smooth, natural-sounding English dialogue more difficult.
  5. - Honorifics like sensei can create perceived inconsistencies. For example, consider the line: "Look how well that sensei is dancing!"- this sounds unnatural when sensei is being used to mean coach. If we translate it as coach in some places but keep sensei in others, it creates inconsistency.
  6. - They increase CPS (characters per second). I don't want to sacrifice my ability to express something fully just to make room for an honorific in a reasonable time limit. Nor do I want to have lines be over 18-19 characters per second.
  7. - They widen line length. Also, while not always an issue, honorifics can sometimes cause awkward line breaks (like any hyphenated word).
  8. - And finally, I like doing cute and funny nicknames when I can.

  10. I could also go on about how localzing/translating honorifics allows audience to understand better etc but that's an argument everyone has already heard gazillion times so I'll save you the time.
  11. All in all, you'll always have to work around certain things. With or without honorifics.
  12. Personally, and especially for this anime, I'd rather focus on localizing the meaning behind/translating an honorific than forcing them in and making my subs feel worse to me.
