BACKGROUND | areum, named by her mother who said she just k n e w she would grow to be a beautiful girl, comes from a family that was modest despite being upper-middle class. they taught her how the world worked and how to find the fireflies during times of darkness. never once did they stop her from doing what she wanted, spoiling her yet warning her that they could take it all away if she gave them enough reason to, and she never did. well, until the day her brother left for the army. areum and her brother were close despite their five year age difference, having the promise of being each other's best friend until the very end. you could imagine the heartbreak she felt when his voice didn't respond back one day, after school when she reached their home, and heard of his enlistment. she knew it was coming-- knew that he was of age and had wanted nothing more than to serve their country-- but areum hadn't anticipated it to be right on his birthday, of all days, when he was taken (the cookies she had bought before returning ended up in her stomach instead of his). until she was 19, areum fell into a state of depression, closing off everybody around her yet pretending to have an open heart (no one heard muffled pillow sobs & saw metaphorical heart walls). it wasn't until she met [the unfortunate maknae] that she started recovering, becoming a new version of her old self that knew better.
