A thousand Takantan bowstrings let go at once . A storm of arrows raced out from the long phalanx , like a hunting cloud that darkened the blue sky . The first volley hadn’t even reached the demons before the Takantans sent a second volley arcing after it . The crashing wave of missiles rained on the onrushing sea of gleaming black , a demon horde so thick that if any of them fell , Ahiliyah couldn’t see them drop .

Another dense volley of Takantan arrows landed . This time , Ahiliyah did see demons fall . Trailing behind the flowing black wave , she saw hundreds of stragglers limping or crawling along , hundreds more flat on the volcanic plain , thrashing in agony .
