- Sometimes you come across movies by chance that you had no idea existed, and that makes yo realize that there is being produced a lot of good quality movies outside of Hollywood. To me, this movie was a hidden gem, a treasure that I feel lucky to have found. You can go to the box office any time and choose between various Hollywood productions that are nowhere near the quality of this work. Seldom have I seen a better portrayal of the theme "journey to the heart of darkness". Other movies that have touched on this theme would be "Apocalypse now", "Mercenaries", "Tears of the sun" and "Cannibal holocaust". Yes, this movie is depressive. It's supposed to be. To me, the point in such a movie is the portrayal of depression, fear, darkness and evil itself, and not so much the story that is used to portray it. The journey is within ourselves, exploring our darkest emotions and fears as we move along. I don't think the main theme in Apocalypse now was the Vietnam war, and I don't think the main theme in this movie is the black plague or the history of Christianity, as much as it is the journey into our own black hearts. But of course there are also some interesting historical and religious angles in this movie for those who would be more interested in those themes.<br/><br/>What a dark ride we are offered. As the main characters ride deeper and deeper into the beautiful dark forest (what beautiful scenery) and everything becomes more and more quiet and sinister around them, you can really sense the fear of coming face to face with death and true evil. And they do. The ending is quiet harsh and brutal. Let's leave it to that and not spoil this experience for those who haven't watched the movie yet. I will just add that everything is high-end in this movie, the directing and actors and everyone involved deliver a high-end piece of quality filmmaking that is far ahead of much of the commercial and speculative dribble that is being churned out by Hollywood. This is filmmaking for fine diners and not for the likes who enjoy watching Desperate housewives. If you like movies like "Apocalypse now" you will probably like this movie.
- This movie basically turned out to be more than what I expected. I was expecting a decent movie since I liked the director Christopher Smith's previous works but this movie overall is a low budget movie most definitely worth seeing once. This movie has some very well crafted twists that M. Night Shyamalan should learn from. You know those movies where you think you have everything down? Well this isn't one of them, just when you might think you know what direction it's going to go and how it's going to end. It will suddenly take the audiences for a loop. So basically a group of Christian demon slayers are on a mission to kill a necromancer with the help of a young monk guide who is on the mission as well for a reason. And they are on this journey while a deadly plague is killing off many people. The thing is, usually for a low budget movie like this it takes a while to actually care about what happens to the group. But the direction of this made me sort of care who dies and who lives, especially when the movie came close to the end. I like the actor Sean Bean and he was fantastic in this but the other actors and actresses stood out as well. This is a low budget movie that is very much worth the time to see and will be looking forward to this director's next work.<br/><br/>7.6/10

- Osmund (<a href="/name/nm1519666/">Eddie Redmayne</a>), a novice monk in 1348 England during the time of the first outbreak of Black Death, agrees to lead Ulrich (<a href="/name/nm0000293/">Sean Bean</a>), an envoy to the Bishop, and his followers, to a village in the Great Marsh that has not yet been ravaged by the disease. Ulric believes that the village is headed by a necromancer and wants to bring him or her back for confession, trial, and execution. Black Death is based on an original screenplay by Dario Poloni. The Black Death is another term for bubonic plague, caused by the Yersinia pestis bacteria and mostly spread by germ-infected fleas hitchhiking on rats. It is infamous for wiping out an estimated 25 million people in 14th century Europe. At that time, however, germs were unknown (germs were discovered by Louis Pasteur in 1860), so the scourge was blamed on either the sins of the people or on witchcraft. The name "bubonic" comes from "bubo", meaning "swollen gland". Swollen lymph nodes (buboes) in the armpit and groin were a sure sign of the infection, which typically kills in 4 to 5 days. Bubonic plague is still active today, but it is treatable with appropriate antibiotics. They're called "beak masks" because the shape looks like a bird's beak. Worn by doctors (and robbers) during the medieval plague, the beaks were filled with herbs and other concoctions thought to protect the wearer from "bad air". In essence, the beak masks are an early type of gas mask. Although they may not have protected against bubonic plague spread by flea bites, the masks may have offered protection against the pneumonic and septicemic forms of the disease. According to Wolfstan (<a href="/name/nm0001487/">John Lynch</a>), one of Ulric's followers, a necromancer is someone who plucks the dead from the cold earth and breathes new life into them. Not according to the movie. In Osmund's tromp through the swamp looking for Langiva (<a href="/name/nm0396924/">Carice van Houten</a>), she admits that she used trickery and herbalism to perform the miracles people in her village expected, perhaps to make them believe that she had supernatural powers or perhaps to convince them that there was no such thing as God. When Osmund pleaded with her to resurrect Averill (<a href="/name/nm2632878/">Kimberley Nixon</a>) for the second time, Langiva said that she could not, because Osmund had really killed Averill and by his own hand. Although the village had no plague so far, it wasn't because of supernatural reasons, but because of its isolation. After the massacre of the witch hunters and many of the villagers, Wolfstan returns the wounded Osmund to the monastery. In a voiceover, Wolfstan tells how he heard stories about Osmund's heart turning cold in the years that followed and how Osmund took up the sword, looking for Langiva in every woman he saw, torturing them and burning them as witches. Whether he actually found Langiva is unknown, as every woman looked like Langiva to him. In the final scene, Osmund burns yet another "witch", and Wolfstan says that he would like to think that Osmund eventually found peace and goodness. a5c7b9f00b
