  17. EU companies are meant to charge VAT to all customers in the EU under the MOSS scheme, and it's meant to be charged at the rate of your country of residence (so customers from the UK pays 20% VAT etc) - The funds taken in VAT go to each respected country at the end of each quarter.
  18.
  19. Primarily it's expected to make pricing fairer - As companies previously registered in countries where VAT was lower and therefore customers would pay less in VAT, where as now you pay the VAT amount from the country that you're in (so you should be paying all EU companies 20% VAT when you're from the UK, where as before you'd pay the rate of VAT of where the company was registered).
  20.
  21. Thanks Criot.
  22. Interesting system.
  23. A friend of mine in the US purchased hosting from a company in the US and didn't have to pay any sales tax and yet when I applied to the same company, they wanted to charge me VAT so I declined.

  28. No point declining. It's EU law that all digital services are charged with the VAT law where the order takes place.

  31. All those lucky people who live in non vat countries eh.
  32. Asia here we come.
  33.
  34. If you are a EU customer and you take services from a EU company, then as per the law, you are supposed to pay VAT. And if you are from non EU country, looking for services from a EU company VAT will not be applicable.
  35.
  36. I believe that if you have a small hosting business outside the EU you don′t have to charge VAT to customers in the EU until you reach a minimum sales threshold, this is why some US companies charge it and others don′t. It depends on how much money they are making in the EU.
  37.
  38. If you live in the EU and want to save 20% in your hosting bill pick a small company not in the EU and they will not charge you that tax. That has been my experience.

  42. Not just EU businesses, businesses in the US also must charge VAT for services delivered to any EU Individual or Business and the business then chooses to submit their returns to a specific country that they registered their VAT number against in the EU. If you do have a VAT number you can submit that to get the VAT portion of the invoice waived.

  46. Yes if you dont wanna to pay VAT just move to asia.
  47. Come here to indonesia hehe
  48.
  49. I've just been looking into this and read the current UK Gov guidance.
  50. In summary, it depends if you are treated as a 'Consumer' or a UK Business. If the latter, then the hosting company outside the EU should not charge VAT.
  51.
  52. Relevant current info here for reference:
  53. Defining digital services - Electronically supplied services
  54. website supply or web hosting services
  55. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-vat-...vate-consumers
  56.
  57. If you supply digital services and your customer does not give you a VAT registration number (VRN), you should:
  58. * treat it as a business-to-consumer supply
  59. * charge the VAT due in the customer’s EU member state
  60. If a customer cannot supply a VRN but claims they’re in business but not VAT-registered because, for example, they’re below their EU member state’s VAT registration threshold, you can accept other evidence of your customer’s business status. For example, a link to the customer’s business website or other commercial documents.

  64.
  65. Also if the place of supply of the hosting service (the servers) is not in the EU, then your supply of services is outside the scope of VAT.

  75. I made a purchase to OVH and was charged 21% VAT even though I do not live in any EU country... When you register as a customer you clearly state your residence country, there should not be any confussion about this but they will charge you anyway.

  79. Pffft. Yeah, I'll get right on that.
  80. Until EU envelopes the globe, they need to learn their place. This "you must comply no matter where you live" stuff is ridiculous.

  87. I agree which is why I hate the European Union, not Europe but the EU. I pay VAT when I buy locally otherwise I buy elsewhere like the USA and thankfully I'm not charged VAT and I hope never to do so. The European (Elite) Union think they run everything and want to monitor the world.
  88.
  89. But yeah on topic if you buy from a European Company which is registered for VAT and collects it you have to pay it. Otherwise buy overseas where they don't charge VAT. They have to show you, you are being charged VAT on checkout otherwise don't pay it.

  94. Were you by chance using a VPN with an Eu IP address? That is the only explanation I can come up with for a US company charging VAT.

  101. Can someone please tell me why hosting companies that are not UK registered charge UK VAT?
  102. Is that not illegal?
  103. No it's not. By new EU law all companies have to bill vat to EU customers, read: private persons, in their own countries VAT %. Yes, they don't like to make it easy for us
