- Fans of The Last of Us frequently make bold claims that it is a "masterpiece", and that it has "revolutionized" and "raised the bar" for storytelling in games.
- This cannot be further from the truth.
- While much can be said for the game's quality of presentation, there is nothing revolutionary about the narrative-gameplay interplay (or lack thereof). The only times the story and gameplay mix is through hotspot-activated dialogue segments, which is hardly new to gaming.
- Simply having a good story is not revolutionary unless it is conveyed in a way that has not been done before, does it in a way that makes MEANINGFUL use of the game's mechanics or the nature of the game itself, and amounts to more than just WOWEE ZOWEE HERE'S A FUCKING COLLECTIBLE
looking at you, Fez
. Of those three things, TLOU only does one.
- TLOU does not deserve even a modicum of the mind-boggling praise it has received.
