- [20:45] <@Odin> Aight. Who wants to claim FIRST?
- [20:46] <Spindly> FIRST
- [20:46] <@Odin> TO SPINDLY
- [20:46] <Spindly> I have to go to bet at around 2:oo AM tonight due to lolclasses
- [20:46] <Spindly> so yeh
- [20:46] <@Odin> Have anything RESEMBLING a character sheet?
- [20:46] <@Odin> 200 who's time?
- [20:46] <CelestialDoggie> (Link: https://sites.google.com/site/allie92214/)https://sites.google.com/site/allie92214/ CHARACTER SHEET FOR ALLIE
- [20:47] <CelestialDoggie> I believe spindles is in eastern time?
- [20:47] <Spindly> Central
- [20:47] <@Odin> So what time are you right now?
- [20:48] <Spindly> Nine
- [20:48] <CelestialDoggie> yeah it's 8:48 central
- [20:49] <@Odin> So you have 5 hours?
- [20:50] <Spindly> ye
- [21:00] <@Odin> Another night of tossing and turning in your bed. The thin sheets are soaked with sweat and knotted around your body as you awaken, throat hoarse with a scream that won't pass your lips. A quick glance at your comm shows that it's 5am. Close enough to when your morning starts, and there's no way you're going back to sleep after... What, exactly? The memories fade when you reach out for them, just like they do everytime you try and
- [21:00] <@Odin> remember something before the bus stop, and this three room apartment. An icon on your comm indicates you have TWO(2) Unread Messages.
- [21:01] * Stonejaw brushes thick black hair from his face and groans, reaching out to grab the com and activate the touchscreen. He acesses the messages as he stands up and drags himself to the sink to grab some water.
- [21:07] <@Odin> 1. From: Contact BOSSMAN [Heya slick, I got another ward-job lined up for ya. Reclamation site out in the Drownies is getting spooked by some Astral crap pretty badly, but they're small-fry who can't get a legit wage-mage contract. Think you can handle it?
- [21:08] <Stonejaw> Stonejaw is a dwarf in his mid twenties with medium length black hair, the sides of which are pleated and tied back. He's clean-shaven with a reddish brown tinge to his skin that, along with a narrow jawline and pronounced nose, denote Amerindian heritage.
- [21:08] * Stonejaw enters a reply message.
- [21:08] <Stonejaw> [Yeah, I think I can handle that. The usual rate?]
- [21:09] <@Odin> 2. From: THE EXCHANGE [Please bring a replacable heavy duty (Acid Rain preferable) umbrella and disposable commlink with you on your day today for a chance at a KARMIC REWARD!
- [21:09] <@Odin> ]
- [21:09] <Stonejaw> "A....karmic reward."
- [21:15] <Stonejaw> "Well, I got no reason not to." He said with a shrug. "I could use some karma." He says, pouring a bit of water into a cactus on his mantle before grabbing an umbrella, deciding to pick up a cheap five-nuyen burner-com from the nearest Stuffer Shack.
- [21:15] <Stonejaw> And maybe some Choco-nubs.
- [21:21] <@Odin> It seems every Stuffer Shack is just a couple blocks away. "How the hell do they afford market penetration like that?" you wonder over the exact cost/benefits scale of such a scaling industry model, the graphs lining up in your head, your tie tight against your throat as you give the presentation to the... boardroom? As quickly as the feeling comes, it fades again. You blink at the sudden harshness, the drive here an absolute blank
- [21:21] <@Odin> spot in your memory.
- [21:24] <Stonejaw> "Guh. Wierd..." He mutters, rubbing his head as he makes his purchases quick, deciding to get the hell out before more of whatever-the-hell-that-was comes on again.
- [21:25] <@Odin> *Harshness of the Stuffer Shack lights
- [21:26] <Stonejaw> Also that.
- [21:26] <@Odin> BOSSMAN sends you a terse reply a few minutes later. Sounds like he just got up. [1.2 the usual. They were pretty desperate.]
- [21:27] <Stonejaw> [Nice. I'll be there in a sec.] He takes off to the meeting spot.
- [21:29] <@Odin> There's only a few clouds on the horizon as the sun finally breaks, golden rays of dawn starting to illuminate the City of Angels. Thankfully you're mostly heading Southwest, so the sun isn't blinding. A deep feeling in your gut tells you that today is going to be a good day. Heck, maybe a great day, especially if an operation like this is C.O.D....
- [21:33] * Stonejaw tries to be a bit more aware of this feeling, always helps to have a healthy dash of awarness. One he comes to his stop he slaps on his body-armor, matte black plates with dark green undermesh, and a smooth wooden staff with a delicately carved image of a pair of femenine hands clasping an amber stone.
- [21:39] <@Odin> Around you is an absolute rats nest of sea walls, levees, and vehicle-ready floating bridges, everywhere you look there seems to be a different corporate sign proclaiming the patch of ground the sign sits on to be another piece of Current and Future Corporate territory. Your comm beeps.
- [21:41] <@Odin> From: The Exchange: [Please place prior provisions through the chainlink fence of "S.K. Reclamation Site #1678" for your KARMIC REWARD]
- [21:43] <@Odin> A quick glance tells you it's not even a hop skip and a jump away from your meeting site to do it, and is barely a hop. All you'd have to do is lean a little....
- [21:44] * Stonejaw decides to leave the provisions where the strange comm instructs.
- [21:52] <Odinphone> As you pull your hand back through the fence, BOSSMAN, that middling height, balding, pudgy human in the off the rack suit (real name: Bob.) scares the hell out of you with his booming voice. "C'mon Stone, they ain't the ones paying us! This lot, buckaroo!"
- [21:54] <Odinphone> The lot identifies itself physically and virtually as "GAIATRONICS ECO RESTORATION ZONE" these should be prime working hours, but not a soul stirs, all the construction machines are silent, and only the rumble of pumps from adjacent lots disturb you.
- [21:54] <Stonejaw> "BWAGH! Sorry, sorry. Yeah I Gotcha."
- [21:55] <Stonejaw> "Well that's unsettlingly quiet."
- [21:56] <Odinphone> Bob whistles. "Damn, I guess they weren't kidding. Pay just entered escrow, ya ready?"
- [21:57] <Stonejaw> "As I'll ever be."
- [22:18] <@Odin> You know the drill. You gotta find some object that won't be moved, to act as the physical anchor for the astral wards. Doesn't have to be in the exact center, although that sort of thing helps. The area has been drained of water, but outside of the designated paths looks like treacherous mud...
- [22:19] <@Odin> Preferably you can find something that doesn't move, or won't get bumped by some unskilled labor or whatever other malady that might force you to make a long drive back out here.
- [22:22] * Stonejaw looks around for something solid enough to work wth.
- [22:25] <@Odin> Well you might be able to enchant an earthmover or something, but they might want to actually use the equipment. There's some rebar lying around, might be able to stab that into the sucking mud. Or you could look for whatever you could find around here. (AKA, insert your own.)
- [22:26] * Stonejaw decides to make an astral anchor from the deeply dug-in fence-post surrounding the property, some concrete reinforcement and professional hammering means it's a perfect "Totem pole" For his task.
- [22:30] <@Odin> As you finish attaching the big "DO NOT TOUCH: ASTRAL SECURITY" signs on the physical, AND augmented plane (The astral takes care of itself, considering what you're doing...) you notice the hand in the mud juuuuuust off the safe path.
- [22:32] * Stonejaw draws some quick little sigils of anchoring onto the pole before approaching the mud-hand, readying a spell. "Earth spirit or Toxic?"
- [22:33] <@Odin> The hand looks pale, and slightly decomposed. Even 4 years after the Twins and the Tsunami, they're still pulling bodies out of the ground...
- [22:34] <@Odin> Bob looks over from his cigarette break. "You say something?"
- [22:36] <Stonejaw> "We got a body here."
- [22:36] <Stonejaw> "I think that might be the cause of your astral disturbance, lemme try something."
- [22:36] * Stonejaw peers into the astral around the hand.
- [22:45] <Odinphone> As your third eye takes in the unnatural horror that is the ha-that is the BEING infesting that hand, you stumble backwards, slipping and falling on your ass. The body lurches out of the ground, mud falling away from the rotten corpse as it reaches towards you.
- [22:49] <Stonejaw> "OH-KAY fuckthat!"
- [22:52] * Stonejaw holds out his staff and exclaims "FULMENICTUS!" As a bolt of glowing white mana crackles with light as it leaps from his hands, striking the creature in BOTH worlds.
- [22:59] <@Odin> The shedim-zombie's head explodes, showering the ground with dessicated flesh as the jellyfish like spirit is released into the astral "air", withering away in a matter of seconds. Bob rushes over, waving a dinky little holdout. "Holy SHIT Stone, was that a goddamn zombie!?"
- [23:02] <Stonejaw> "Yes. Yes it was."
- [23:02] <Stonejaw> "That was a Shedim, very VERY bad news."
- [23:03] <@Odin> He stares at the body. "Well I'll be. D-do we need to shoot it, or burn the body, or something?"
- [23:03] <Stonejaw> "No, no the spirit in it is dead, but there's a very good chance that there might be more."
- [23:06] <Stonejaw> "We're going to need a full astral sweep of the place, and everyone involved in this needs to be screened, for all we know someone working on this might be posessed by a master."
- [23:09] <@Odin> He starts worridly looking around at the other patches of mud, and edging back to the car. "Well I think we can get a raise out of this, yeah?" He's nervous, and trying to mask it.
- [23:09] <Stonejaw> "I'd say we damn well should ,yeah."
- [23:10] <Stonejaw> "Come on, let's see if there are any more."
- [23:13] <@Odin> You poke about the place for another hour before stumbling across another shedim-infested corpse. This one tried to lunge for Bob's ankles, but the missing bottom half means it scrabbles about on the ground after the initial surge out of the mud.
- [23:13] <Stonejaw> "Maybe we'll get lucky and find out this whole thing's on an insect spirit hive, heh."
- [23:13] <@Odin> "JAYSUS CHRIST!" he yells, popping off shots.
- [23:14] * Stonejaw hurls off another bolt of white light, aiming at the corpse and the horrid spirit within.
- [23:16] <@Odin> To his credit he manages to put a round on target, before you pop it. More rotten flesh decorates the ground as the shedim evaporates in the hostile nature of this reality.
- [23:17] <@Odin> "WHAT in damnNATION is going on HERE?" yells an unfamiliar voice long accustomed to instant obediance.
- [23:17] <Stonejaw> "You're getting better at this." He says with a bit of a smirk.
- [23:18] <Stonejaw> "I don't know, but I don't like this one bit. Once is happenstance, twice is enemy action."
- [23:19] <Stonejaw> "I'm going to conjure us some backup, alright?"
- [23:19] <Stonejaw> "A beast spirit should help us sniff out the source if there is one."
- [23:21] <@Odin> Boots click on the paved ground as someone approaches you from behind. "You two them external contractors hired to fix this bad mojo jojo up?"
- [23:25] <Stonejaw> "Yeah, yeah we are." He says before going back to muttering an incantation under his lips, a green circle appears on the floor, from which emerges a spirit in the shape of a skeletal dire-wolf, bones etched with glowing green markings, its hollow skull and chest filled with branching interweaving red veins.
- [23:29] <@Odin> He takes a step back. "The frag is that!?" he yells.
- [23:29] <Stonejaw> "Beast spirit. Don't worry, he doesn't bite unless I tell him to."
- [23:30] <Stonejaw> "Spirit," He says in a firm yet respectful tone. "WE hunt corpse-thieves. Sniff them out."
- [23:36] <@Odin> The spirit takes off, diving just under the muck and leaving scant inches of it's form above the ground as it searches for more body snatchers.
- [23:37] <@Odin> "So is this site clear to work or what? I got a crew with mouths to feed stuck cuz of all the spooky shit happening around here, and I ain't getting paid to let em slack around either."
- [23:37] <Stonejaw> "Your building site has Shedim." he says to the guard. "Spirits from an especially nasty metaplane, they like to steal corpses."
- [23:37] <Stonejaw> "And it seems your site has quite a few."
- [23:38] <@Odin> "So you got the chops to clear em out, or are we just gonna sit around with our thumbs up our ass for another week?"
- [23:40] <Stonejaw> "Important question. Do you have any mages on staff?"
- [23:40] <Stonejaw> "Any who
- [23:40] <Stonejaw> 've gone into an astral trance around the time this stuff started happening?"
- [23:41] <@Odin> He hooks his thumbs in his jeans. "Buddy, I work construction, and so do my boys. You think any of us would be digging in the dirt here if we could be digging in mana instead?"
- [23:44] <Stonejaw> "Alright, Your boss is going to need to send in a whole bunch of wage-mages to scour this place if he wants this done right, or he'll have to figure out how to deal with the zoning board breathing down his neck over the steady stream of rotting corpses coming to life on his property."
- [23:45] * Stonejaw follows the beast spirit.
- [23:45] <@Odin> He swears a blue streak for a minute. The spirit, long since astral, investigates him, before snuffling, shaking it's head, and diving back into the muck. It transmits a feeling of satisfaction.
- [23:47] <Stonejaw> "Look, I'm going to give this place a once over, but tell your bosses to keep an eye out for more of this stuff in the future, okay?"
- [23:48] <@Odin> The beast gently hovers besides you, apparently finished with it's task. Doesn't seem like it's found any more Shedim.
- [23:49] <Stonejaw> "Looks like the place is clean."
- [23:50] <@Odin> "So we can get back to work? No more weird ass mage drek?"
- [23:50] <@Odin> He's already calling it in on his comm.
- [23:50] <Stonejaw> "But have your workstaff and any staff on the premises set up codewords in case of a non-consensual bodily occupation."
- [23:50] <Stonejaw> "Before I do. Can I have the spirit look over your workstaff?"
- [23:51] <Stonejaw> "Just have them come in single file. The spirit will detect and I'll assense and we'll get this over with and everyone can get back to work."
- [23:51] <Stonejaw> "I just want to make sure none of your boys gets hurt."
- [23:52] <@Odin> He grunts. "Just as long as we're getting back to it, we've lost enough time aready and we were behind schedule to start with."
- [23:52] <Stonejaw> "Well, it's like you guys say, we can get this done fast or we can get it done right."
- [23:53] <Stonejaw> "Now let's get this over with."
- [23:53] <@Odin> You examine his crew. They're clean. The spirit does another once-over pass, and is pretty sure there's no more shedim. Bob stands around and smokes a lot, occasionally playing with his comm.
- [23:54] <Stonejaw> "Alright, we're good." He says to boss.
- [23:54] <Stonejaw> "Maybe we should checkthe neighboring properties, just to be safe."
- [23:56] <@Odin> "Not my department, but I guess I should thank you anyway for getting all this taken care of." He sticks out a rough, calloused hand.
- [23:57] <Stonejaw> "No problem, and here's my comm number if anything comes up. If workers start acting strange, have them assensed as soon as possible or call me."
- [23:59] <Stonejaw> "Shedim are no joke."
- [23:59] <@Odin> He shakes your hand, adds your comm to his comm, and goes on his merry way. As you and Bob drive away from the scene, he exhales. "Whooo, that was some shit, wasn't it?"
- [00:01] <Stonejaw> "Yeah, You should have seen them in the astral, ugh."
- [00:02] <@Odin> "Well the good news is, Pueblo still has a bounty on them, so as soon as they get a guy over to take a look, we're looking at that ON TOP of QUADROUPLE our usual rate."
- [00:03] <Stonejaw> "Nice!" He says with a bit of a grin. "Maybe I can use that to get the hell out of that crappy apartment."
- [00:06] <@Odin> "Yeah, yea- WATCH IT!" he yells as you turn the corner in the narrow rats nest of the reclamation sites.
- [00:08] * Stonejaw hits the brakes
- [00:08] <Stonejaw> "AGH!"
- [00:10] <@Odin> A Eurocar Westwind is almost perpendicular across the road, and your front bumper comes dangerously close to it's side, and the inevitable civil court. This is not a car one should drive around here. This is a land for yellow construction, and tough pickup trucks, not luxery sports cars.
- [00:11] <Stonejaw> "Huh, that's wierd."
- [00:11] <Stonejaw> "Shedim in a construction sight, fancy euro car in the street?"
- [00:11] <Stonejaw> "This bids investigation."
- [00:12] * Stonejaw hops out of the car. "You wanna come or just watch the car?"
- [00:12] * Stonejaw turns to the beast spirit. "Wits sharp, boy. I smell a rat."
- [00:16] <@Odin> The passenger door opens, and a suit steps out. "Ahhh, excuse me, could you point me towards the GAIATRONICS Reclamation Eco Zone or whatever? I think that's where we're going."
- [00:16] * Stonejaw assenses the lad in the suit
- [00:16] <Stonejaw> "Who wants to know?"
- [00:17] * Stonejaw quietly motions for his spirit to sniff out this guy and his van.
- [00:19] <@Odin> His augs are mostly in the head, glandular, and interestingly enough, kidney/liver region.
- [00:19] <@Odin> Mundane as a brick otherwise.
- [00:19] <@Odin> The spirit smells mage flesh in the sports car.
- [00:20] <Stonejaw> "Why, what's the reason for going there?"
- [00:21] <@Odin> His eyes glance at something on his glasses. "Aha! Looks like we won't need to go there at all. You sir my good dwarf wouldn't happen to have been involved in a-" his voice takes on a flare for the dramatic "Magical duel against the foulest creatures of the furthest metaplanes!-" back to normal "Just now, would you?"
- [00:23] <Stonejaw> "If your'e talking about a pair of shedim, yeah."
- [00:23] <Stonejaw> "Wasn't much of a duel though, more a quick-draw affair."
- [00:24] <@Odin> "Aha! It would take a powerful magician indeed to reduce such a pair of creatures to constituent mana in such a record time, eh? Eh?"
- [00:25] <Stonejaw> "WEll I mean they were MINOR shedim. What's all this about?"
- [00:28] <@Odin> "I find it fairly interesting that a mage of your caliber is willing to crawl around a place like this doing glorified pest control. Perhaps you might be willing to... change that?"
- [00:28] <@Odin> Your comm notifies you of an incoming data package.
- [00:28] * Stonejaw opens the data package. "What Kind of change?"
- [00:31] <@Odin> "Something a little more... exciting. I'm putting a project together. We're going to make the best damn show this city has seen since Wrym Talk. Action packed, character focused thriller showing the lives of very interesting individuals, doing VERY interesting things."
- [00:32] <Stonejaw> "....Go on."
- [00:33] <@Odin> He smirks now that you've taken the bait. "If you want to know more, all you have to do is show up to auditions. I promise you this though: Not a moment will be boring, and ALL of it will be genuine."
- [00:34] <Stonejaw> "IS this going to be one of those things where 'auditions' means 'fight to the death' or 'run through a death-maze'?"
- [00:35] <@Odin> He groans. "Are you talking about last years "100 Shows to Die on?" You can't just throw people into the robo-pit with no introduction and expect the audience to empathize with them or anything, I mean, COME ON it was fragging TV 101 they failed out of right there and-"
- [00:36] <@Odin> He stops. "No robo death pits, mana-mazes, or other tricks. Promise."
- [00:38] <Stonejaw> "Fine, yeah."
- [00:43] <Stonejaw> "I'm in."
- [00:43] <@Odin> "Hell yeah! See you there...." he lingers. "Got a name?"
- [00:43] <Stonejaw> "Stonejaw."
- [00:44] <@Odin> He takes you in, looking at you with entirely different eyes. "Stonejaw... I like it! And I'm sure the 18-24 demographic will too!" He brings something in his hand up to his face, and snorts. "Frag yeah, it's all coming together! Just a few more characters!"
- [00:45] <Stonejaw> "Ssssoooo is there anything I should expect for this audition?"
- [00:46] <@Odin> "Come dressed, prepped, and ready for the 3-d screen! Yeah!"
- [00:48] <@Odin> Annnnnnd CUT
- [00:48] <@Odin> I'm calling it here
