  1. Shalom. My name is Josh Berkenwald and I'm the Rabbi of Congregation Sinai. I'm standing inside of a Sukkot temporary booth, much like the ones that the Israelites lived in when they were in the wilderness, on their way to the promised land. This coming Friday night, Jewish people around the world will begin observing the holiday of Sukkot, known in English as Tabernacles. For seven days, we step outside of our permanent homes and live inside Sukkot just like this one. The roof is made of branches to provide shade, but not so many that we cannot still see look up and see the stars at night . We'll eat our meals, sleep, and maybe even watch some football in here. Sukkot is the one holiday when Jews are commanded to be happy. We normally fulfill this by practicing extreme hospitality. We invite guests into our Sukkot for festive meals, often packing in as many as we can fit. This year is going to be different. Well, we won't be able to gather together, in person, that doesn't mean that we can't find ways to celebrate. We will support each other virtually, and make this holiday a joyous one. Friends let's take care of each other. The best way we can do that is by wearing a mask every time we leave our homes, and washing our hands regularly. For those with the ability, let's be generous to those who are struggling to make sure that everyone in our community is able to experience joy. Together, we will get through this. May God spread a Sukkot of peace over all of us. Amen.
