- Frank Darrbo is a hapless fry cook. When his wife Sarah falls off the wagon and dumps him for Jacques, a drug dealer, Frank tries to get her back by reporting her kidnapped, grabbing her from Jacques' car, and wailing for her to return. After watching Christian TV and having a vision, he becomes a superhero to fight evil. He sews a costume, finds a weapon (a pipe wrench) and looks for crimes to stop. He has problems: his wrench inflicts real injury, so the cops want him for being a vigilante, his sense of boundaries is flawed, and Jacques' gang has guns. Libby, a clerk at a comic book store, becomes his sidekick, and it's time to go save Sarah. What chance do they have?

- Just saw it, and I was bored throughout the whole movie. Thanks god I read some news-sites while watching this, or I would have fallen asleep.<br/><br/>Seriously, I don't get the good reviews here. But I suppose they are faked.<br/><br/>This movie adds nothing new to the genre. The humor is dull. Camera work is bellow average. Main character acting is dull, it is good for "The office" but don't put such a charisma-blackhole as lead character in a movie. What's wrong with Hollywood?<br/><br/>It is categorized as comedy, but I didn't even grin a single time.<br/><br/>I don't even know what I could add to the list of what's wrong with it, because it simply has nothing in it. It is like sleeping without dreaming.<br/><br/>If you like this genre of movies, then stick with Kick-Ass or Defendor. They are way better.<br/><br/>I gave it a 2/10, as there are worse movies out there.<br/><br/>Don't watch it, except it's for free on a rainy Sunday morning and you are lying in bed with some kind of sickness and you are demented anyway.
- 'SUPER': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five) <br/><br/>Another average guy superhero movie, this one is from writer/director James Gunn and stars Rainn Wilson. Gunn is a former employee of the low budget independent film production company Troma Entertainment, which he wrote and co-directed his first film for (the critically acclaimed 'TROMEO AND JULIET'). He also wrote and directed the horror satire film 'SLITHER' and wrote the screenplay to the 2004 remake of 'DAWN OF THE DEAD'. 'SUPER' is done in much the same style as Gunn's earlier work and has a definite, slightly bigger budget, 'Troma' feel to it. I can see a lot of heavy inspiration from 'Troma's' most famous film 'THE TOXIC AVENGER'. It's been compared a great deal to last year's popular 'KICK-ASS' film, because of it's similar themes (and even called a ripoff by some), but in fact Gunn was writing his screenplay at the same time that Mark Millar was writing the original 'KICK-ASS' comics. I have to say I saw a lot of similarities between the two films but they definitely have their own unique styles as well. While 'SUPER' is not quite as great a film as 'KICK-ASS' it's still an impressive 'kick-ass' film all it's own.<br/><br/>Wilson was cast as the lead in the film due to a suggestion from Gunn's ex-wife (and Wilson's 'OFFICE' co-star) Jenna Fischer. Wilson than sought out buddy Ellen Page (whom he had worked with on 'JUNO') as his co-star for the film. In the movie he plays a lonely and nerdy cook named Frank D'Arbo who led a pretty uneventful life until a beautiful waitress named Sarah (Liv Tyler) fell for him and married him. Sarah was a recovering drug addict and saw Frank as someone she could basically just use to help her feel better. When she falls into addiction again and leaves Frank for a local strip club owner named Jacques (Kevin Bacon) Frank falls into depression again and finds inspiration in the form of a religious superhero kid's character on TV (played by Nathan Fillion). Frank then has a vision he believes to be from God and decides he needs to become a masked avenger and win Sarah back. He gets advice from of a local comic book shop clerk named Libby (Page).<br/><br/>The film is very dark and increasingly violent. It's as disturbing as Hell and constantly challenges the viewer; you want to like Frank (as well as Libby) but the things the characters do continuously press the boundaries of normal moral behavior (far beyond normal). At the same time the movie continues to try to make you feel sympathy for the characters and oddly relate to them so the film is constantly hard to process and stomach. It's very gross and explicit at times (including a very weird rape scene, of a young woman raping a man much bigger than her). The film is also very funny and thrilling at times as well as oddly dramatic. It's a complete mixed bag of entertainment and feelings. I really admire a film like this that seriously takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride and never leaves you knowing how to feel. It of course has a lot of similarities to other similar themed films but it's also completely unique (in it's own way) and without a doubt unforgettable. Hats off to Gunn once again! Wilson is great like always (and plays a little against type) and Page is a stand out. It's nice to see Corvallis's Darkside Cinemas breaking the norm and getting unique genre films like this for a change.
