  1. White Ink
  2.
  3. The streets were stained Orange and Blue, along with the walls, the roofs, fences, pipes, utility poles, and pretty much every other surface in sight. Most of it was Blue here. This was enemy territory.
  4. An Orange inkling crept through the streets, trying her best to make as little noise as possible. She was critically low on ammo, away from her teammates, and far deeper inside enemy territory than she wanted to be. Somehow she had become separated from the her allies in the area. For a while she had heard distant sounds of gunfire, definite signs of combat. Now it was eerily quiet. One side had probably wiped out the other, and she was probably on the losing team. If her friends had survived, she's hear more gunfire as they coated the area in orange ink. The silence was terrifying.
  5.
  6. Suddenly she heard shooting coming from ahead of her, ground-level. She couldn't see the shooter, but they had to be close - too close for comfort. They probably weren't shooting at her, but they would if the saw her. She spotted a narrow alleyway off to her left, and quickly darted inside. The walls and ground here were unpainted, likely having been ignored by the Blue Inklings when they took this area. The alley was a dead end, but it was dark and easily ignored. Most likely this spot was safer than standing in the middle of the street. If someone attacked her, they could only come from one of two directions: the street, or straight up.
  7.
  8. She backed towards the corner, keeping her gun aimed forward, eyes darting back and forth between the two avenues of attack. Her heart was racing and the sound of her breathing was deafening to her. She heard more shooting, still far away this time, but not as far as before. She clutched her gun so tightly she was worried she might snap it in half. She had only a handful of shots left in her tank, and she'd have to make them count. If the shooter was alone, she could probably take them out before they got her. If it was two, her odds were okay as long as she surprised them. More than that and she was a gonner for sure.
  9.
  10. A third shot, closer still. It was definitely coming from ground-level. The shooter had to be in the streets. She focused all of her attention on the end of the alley now. The instant she saw movement, she was ready to fire. She held onto a vague hope that it was one of her fellow Oranges, but it was unlikely they'd be traveling this far into enemy territory while cavalierly alerting everyone to their presence with random gunfire. It was possible it could be a Cyan or Pink, strolling through someone else's war zone to pick off stragglers and claim a little bit of territory that both sides had missed in the fighting. If that was the case, her alley was a prime target. It would explain why they were on the streets, shooting.
  11. She realized she was holding her breath. She had to force herself to breathe. Her eyes never left the end of the alley. Her whole body felt like it was shaking, but her aim was steady. She heard footsteps approaching, and time slowed down to a crawl. Remember to breathe.

  13. In...
  14.
  15. Footstep.
  16.
  17. Out...
  18.
  19. Footstep.
  20.
  21. In...
  22.
  23. Footstep. They were only a few meters away at most.
  24.
  25. Out...
  26.
  27. Footstep. It couldn't be more than one Inkling.
  28. In...
  29.
  30. Footstep. Their foot scuffed the pavement. They were obviously not trying to be stealthy.
  31.
  32. Out...
  33.
  34. Odds were they had no idea she was here. She'd get the drop on them.
  35.
  36. In...
  37.
  38. SPLAT!
  39.
  40. Gunfire from the roof! Someone else had shot the inklinking in the street! As if in slow motion, she looked upward, tearing her gun away from her forward target and pointing it upward, just in time for the inkling jumping down from the roof to land on her face sneakers-first. More out of reflex than anything, she fired her gun madly, expending the last of her ammo to paint the wall next to her. The two inklings fell to the ground in a tangled hand-to-hand fight. Her attacker was on top of her and they were stronger too. Somehow her gun was kicked away from her - not that it was much use to her. Finally her attacker got his arms free enough to level his gun at her head, and both Inklings went still, breathing heavily.
  41. She was on her back now, with the Inkling on top of her, basically sitting on her chest. She mistook him for a Cyan for a moment, before realizing he was more of a pale white - some kind of albino? The ink in his gun matched, and the design was shaped a little different than the firearms she was used to. He probably wasn't from around here.
  42.
  43. For several seconds neither Inkling moved, as they both tried to catch their breath from the struggle. Her eyes focused on the barrel of the gun. Maybe she could snatch it out of his grip? One of her arms was kind of pinned by her side. She could free it, but no fast enough to surprise him. Anyway that wouldn't help the fact that he was sitting on her. His eyes were locked down the sights of his gun, keeping it pointed directly at her face. He could see where she was looking, ad if he was as clever as she was, he was mentally going over the same options he was. No chance of calling for backup. No other weapon concealed, or she would have used it. She definitely couldn't overpower him faster than he could pull the trigger. They were in the wrong position for her to kick him.
  44.
  45. Nearly a minute passed. Neither Inkling moved a muscle, both waiting for the other to make the first move.
