As soon as the King had entered the room, he said loudly enough for all to hear:
‘Vassal, you have shamed me by consorting with the being I loved most in the world. I herewith defy you and then I shall shame you.’
Thereupon he took two large steps forward and wanted to strike his nephew on top of his head. But Tristan leapt sideways,
thus making the King miss him, and then went over towards a bed where the King’s own sword was lying, drew it from the
scabbard, and lastly took hold of a cloak which he wrapped round his arm.
