- We are somber.
- We are deeply saddened.
- And we are outraged.
- In the emotional wake of Aaron Swartz's death, we are demanding that United States Attorney, Carmen M. Ortiz be removed from office.
- We will not stand by and watch another of our brothers or sisters be imprisoned, tormented, or have their will to live be destroyed by facing aggressive prosecutorial overreach from Attorney Ortiz, based on a loose interpretation of the dangerously vague, and extremely antiquated, Computer Fraud & Abuse Act.
- While threatening Aaron with up to 35 years in prison for the completely innocuous act of downloading documents that he had legal access to, Attorney Ortiz showed no compassion or leniency despite being informed of Aaron's battles with depression. Her office could have easily afforded to do so. She refused plea deals that would have avoided jail time, and would have greatly reduced the burden on Aaron's psyche.
- She could have stopped this, and refused to do so. She has offered lackluster statement's of remorse in the time since we lost Aaron, but that is not enough.
- Aaron's life-long interest was to provide for the overall good of the general public. We should hold our public servants to an even higher standard, and Ortiz has failed that test.
- She has let down the public, tampered with our rights to share free information, and completely broken the entire Swartz family. She has shown a lack of proportionality and a willingness to threaten with unjust and overreaching charges to extort plea bargains from defendants, regardless of their guilt.
- She is a danger to liberty. She is a danger to life.
- On February 19th, 2013, we will gather outside the offices of Attorney Ortiz for a peaceful protest to continue our demand that she be removed from office. She has seen our signatures growing on the whitehouse.gov petition, and now we will show her our numbers, and how loud we can be.
- We Are Anonymous.
- We do not forgive.
- We do not forget.
- Expect us.
