Title: I'm tired of the grind and would like to live a life of luxury as a member of a royal court. Where (and when) should I go?


My job is killing me, and as a hedonist with a time machine I think I have better options than slogging away until retirement. I'm going to go back in time and replace a member of a royal family somewhere in history.

But unlike the naive image of kings and nobles as individuals with absolute power and unlimited luxury, real royalty had to deal with actual governmental responsibility, hostile external forces, internal unrest, and more pesky particulars. Surely, somewhere in history, is a period of relative power and peace that will let me avoid all that.

Put simply: Was there an historical ruling society that closely matched a naive notion of monarchy? (powerful, prosperous, unchallenged)

Goals:
    Superb wealth and access to luxury
    Peace and prosperity in my region
    Broad dispensation to command as one pleases
    Limited to no challenge to one's position for an adult lifetime
