  178. How does Cultural Lag occur?

  180. When the material conditions change, changes occur in the adaptive
  181. culture. However, these changes in the adaptive culture often do not
  182. harmonize with the change in the material culture. In 1922 William F.
  183. Ogburn coined this delay culture lag - a common societal phenomenon
  184. that occurs because the material culture tends to change at a much
  185. more rapid pace than the non-material culture - which often resists
  186. change for a long time. A period of maladjustment occurs when the
  187. non-material culture is struggling to adapt to new material conditions.
