- What is the relationship between the terms culture,
- material culture and non-material culture?
- * Culture:
- The beliefs, values, behavior, and material objects that
- constitute a society's way of life
- * Material Culture:
- In the social sciences, material culture is a term that
- refers to the relationship between artifacts and social
- relations.
- * Non-Material Culture:
- Does not include any physical objects or artifacts.
- May include any ideas, beliefs, values, and norms that
- may help shape our society
- What is Cultural Lag?
- Cultural lag is a term to describe what happens
- in a social system when the cultural ideas used
- to regulate social life do not keep pace with
- other social changes.
- How does Cultural Lag occur?
- When the material conditions change, changes occur in the adaptive
- culture. However, these changes in the adaptive culture often do not
- harmonize with the change in the material culture. In 1922 William F.
- Ogburn coined this delay culture lag - a common societal phenomenon
- that occurs because the material culture tends to change at a much
- more rapid pace than the non-material culture - which often resists
- change for a long time. A period of maladjustment occurs when the
- non-material culture is struggling to adapt to new material conditions.
- These two opposing aspects of culture cause the adaptation of new
- technology to create social problems and conflict. ; yep

- What is an example of cultural lag occurring when a
- technological innovation outpaced cultural adaptation?
- When cars were first invented:
- *- no laws/guidelines to govern driving
- * no speed limits
- * result was chaos - danger
- *- laws created to address this problem,
- closing the gap
- Cultural lag ... new technology ...a
- critical ethical issue b/c failure to
- develop social consensus on how
- technology should be applied may lead
- to breakdowns in social solidarity and
- the rise of social conflict
