I think Stolas wanted to remain faithful to the marriage, but Stella didn't seem to put as much into their relationship as he wanted/needed from her (I used to think love would be fun). Of course, unless we get more info about why their marriage is in the state it's in, we can only speculate.

Stella comes off as disinterested in her family as a whole. In the cold open to episode 2, Octavia calls for both of her parents, and Stella is immediately tells Stolas to go take care of it and goes back to sleep.
