Yantra

Yantra (literally "machine, contraption) is a mystical diagram, mainly from the Tantric traditions. They are used for the worship of deities in temples or at home; as an aid in meditation;
In Rigvedic Sanskrit, it meant an instrument for restraining or fastening, a prop, support or barrier, etymologically from the root yam "to sustain, support" & the -tra suffix expressing instruments.

The literal meaning is still evident in the medical terminology of Sushruta, where the term refers to blunt surgical instruments such as tweezers or a vice. The meaning of "mystical or occult diagram" arises in the medieval period (Kathasaritsagara, Pancharatra).

Usage is usually associated with a particular deity & are used for specific benefits, such as: for meditation; protection from harmful influences; development of particular powers; attraction of wealth or success, etc. They are often used in daily ritual worship at home or in temples, & sometimes worn as a talisman.

As an aid to meditation, yantras represent the deity that is the object of meditation. These yantras emanate from the central point, the bindu. The yantra typically has several geometric shapes radiating concentrically from the center, including triangles, circles, hexagons, octagons, & symbolic lotus petals.

The outside often includes a square representing the four cardinal directions, with doors to each of them.
A popular form is the Sri Chakra, or Sri Yantra, which represents the goddess in her form as Tripura Sundari.
Sri Chakra also includes a representation of Shiva, & is designed to show the totality of creation and existence, along with the user's own unity with the cosmos.

It consists of nine interlocking triangles that surround a central point known as a bindu. These triangles represent the cosmos & the human body. Because of its nine triangles, Shri Yantra is also known as the Navayoni Chakra. When the two-dimensional Shri Yantra is represented in three dimensions, it is called a Maha Meru. Mount Meru derives its name from this shape. In addition to Mount Meru, all other yantras derive from the Shri Yantra.

Yantras tend to be smaller in size than the similar mandala, & traditionally use less color than mandalas.

The Tara Mandala reveals her divine abode of eternal happiness, compassion, long life, healing and serenity.

In modern, typically American use, "mandala" has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a time-microcosm of the universe, though it originally meant to represent wholeness & a model for the organizational structure of life itself—a cosmic diagram that shows us our relation to the infinite, the world that extends beyond & within our minds & bodies.

Occult yantras are used as good luck charms, to ward off evil, as preventative medicine, in exorcism, etc.
by using their magical power. When used as a talisman, the yantra is seen to represent a deity who can be called on at will by the user.

Nataraya Yantra
Nataraja, the dancing form of Lord Shiva, is a very beautiful symbol of the union of nature and the Divine. Nataraja holds fire in one hand, representing the fire element. A damaru in his other hand depicts the space element. Many forces in the universe are represented by a shape similar to that of a damaru, like a chromosome, or shapes of galaxies & so on. Time also is said to have a conical representation. ∞ is the symbol (shape of the damaru) & represents infinity.

Shiva’s hair is open and flying representing the air element. One foot on ground symbolizes prithvi (earth element), another in the air. One hand is the symbolic abhaya hasta offering protection & the other points to his feet  symbolizing surrender. With one foot already in the air, he has already taken a step towards the devotee. He says “You are dear to me” even before beginning.

Shiva is dancing. Life should be like this. The entire creation is full of bliss, The entire creation is dancing in bliss
The entire creation is longing for bliss - Nataraja represents the Ananda Tattva (bliss) that the whole world is longing for.
