- Genocide in the twentieth century has caused millions of deaths and unimaginable suffering throughout the world. The perpetrators of these genocides very successfully isolate and demonize their enemies and convince ordinary people to join their cause, or disregard it. The perpetrators then exterminate their enemies unimpeded. Such has been the case in The Ottoman Empire, Cambodia, and Rwanda.
- The Ottoman Empire hosted the Armenian Genocide, where the Muslim majority killed the Christian/Armenian minority. According to DOCUMENT 1, Armenians were labelled as people threatening peace and security. This, combined with the label of traitor, spy or infidel [DOCUMENT 2] allowed them to be branded enemies of state, and thus, be murdered en masse. The inflammatory rhetoric allowed the Ottomans to successfully kill over 1 million Armenians [OI], with little reprisal from the world community.
- The Cambodian genocide was carried out by the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot. The Cambodian genocide was directed at it's own people, but most specifically those who didn't work hard, those who were educated, and those who showed sympathy[DOCUMENT 7]. Many of the people were also tortured at Tuol Sleng, and were given instructions of what they could and could not do [DOCUMENT 6]All people were forced to swear allegiance to Angka, the Khmer Rouge's political party [OI], and those who did not were killed. The Khmer Rouge Successfully killed nearly 2 million of it's residents either directly or indirectly before losing power and leaving the country in a primitive state.
- The Rwandan Genocide was committed by the Hutu people against the Tutsi minority. The Tutsi minority was targeted specifically because they were believed to be the murderers of The Hutu president Habyarimana [OI]. Before this even occurred however, some media was trying to demonize the Tutsi minority, such as the radio [DOCUMENT 11]. According to DOCUMENT 10: Tutsies were considered dishonest in business, the education sector should be majority Hutu, and the Rwandese Military should not allow Tutsies into their ranks. The inflammatory rhetoric about the Tutsies combined with the assumed coup d'Γtat caused many Hutu civilians to kill the Tutsi. The Hutu were eventually able to kill 800,000 Tutsi in 100 days, making it the most efficient genocide to date [OI].
- Though the world decided to stop genocide after World War Two, many have followed. They have been allowed either under the guise of war, or simply because no one wanted to help end the genocide. In order to not allow another one to occur, the world as a whole must decide that military intervention may be necessary to end it, instead of just economic sanctions and idle talk.
