  54. 1 Author's Foreword [FORE]
  55.
  56. Though a long-time fan of the Harvest Moon series, I was primarily a Nintendo player, and so I did not have the opportunity to play Save the Homeland as a kid. I was familiar with the title, and probably like some other players, I remember thinking that the premise was unappealing. Two staples of the series--marriage and open-ended, unrestricted play--seemed necessary to me for a successful HM game. My favorite games for years remained HM64, Friends of Mineral Town, A Wonderful Life, and Magical Melody.
  57.
  58. In recent years I became a speedrunner. Although I always envisioned one day speedrunning Harvest Moon titles, I started most seriously with Pokemon Sapphire, and advancements in Sapphire kept me occupied for 3-4 years. In that time, runners such as The00berNoober and Demo made great strides in HM speedrunning, mostly 64 and Magical Melody. Eventually I found myself in need of break from Pokemon for a while, so I turned to HM to see how I could contribute. In December 2017 I picked up a used PS2, ordered a copy of StH on a whim, and never looked back. The game immediately struck me as a prime candidate for speedrunning in the HM universe, as it cut out a lot of the things that made other HM games slow--marriage and farming, mainly--while also presenting clearly defined goals of gameplay, and also a clearly defined end. The variety presented by the nine alternate endings meant there were many ways to beat and enjoy the game, and thus many ways for runners to compete.
  59.
  60. However, in my early investigation of StH, one thing I noticed was the sheer dearth of material on the specifics of the game. Ushi no Tane, the most well-known HM fansite, naturally had an StH "guide", which included the standard information about tools, animals, gameplay, etc., and also had relatively brief expositions on each ending. However, the more I played, the more frustrated I became with these expositions. They were sometimes very vague, even ambiguous, as to what the cutscenes were, and what's more, contained misleading, sometimes outright false information as to how to trigger the various required cutscenes for each ending. Though I used the guides for my cursory research into each ending, I quickly discarded them entirely as I dug deeper.
  61.
  62. Across the internet the story was the same. Most Gamefaqs guides or walkthroughs seemed to almost directly plagiarize from the UnoT writeups, and most were written 15+ years ago. However, with more thorough testing, I was eventually able to settle on the approximate cutscene triggers, even if I didn't fully grasp the affection system. That didn't come until January 2018, when a new HM speedrun community member, Laclica, advised me to try Cheat Engine, a free-to-use software that allows the player to locate, view, and manipulate the physical memory addresses in-game during play on an emulator. Upon setting it up, I found immediate results. It is through this software that I have been able to document everything you will read in this guide.
  63.
  64. I knew that once I had verified this information with certainty, I didn't just want to use it for speedrunning. Having so thoroughly enjoyed the Harvest Moon series as a kid, and having come to really love StH even from a casual perspective (it's easily in my top three now, possibly top two), I knew I wanted to go beyond just routing the game for speedrunning purposes. This guide is the result of my labor of love with Save the Homeland, my way to give back to a community for a series that provided me countless hours of entertainment as a kid. My goal is for this to be a fully comprehensive guide that any player can follow to get to the bottom of mysteries that appear to have plagued the HM community since the game's release. It does not appear to be the most widely-played or widely-loved game of the series, but if it aids even one person in being able to enjoy the game like I have, I will have been successful.

  70. 2 Introduction [INTRO]
  71.
  72. Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland (牧場物語3ハートに火をつけて, 'Bokujou Monogatari 3 Haato ni Hi wo Tsukete') was released in 2001, and is the 8th title in the series (7th released outside Japan). Coming only five years after the original SNES game, it is both traditional as well as innovative in many aspects of gameplay. Like its predecessors, we find ourselves a backwards-capped Jack carrying on in the footsteps of his recently-deceased grandfather, a farmer who left his land and tools to the protagonist. StH was the first title to have a different planting system, whereby rather than one bag of seeds covering a 3x3 square, each bag produces just one plant. The field is also significantly reduced in size--it is only eight plots of eight tiles each, rather than what in past games was much more vast. To make up for this, however, the land comes with a fenced pasture to start, so you can easily care for animals right away.
  73.
  74. The biggest way that StH deviates is in the aim of play. As you learn at the outset, Sugar Village--the homeland, as it were--is in danger of being demolished so that an amusement park can be built in its place. The Goddess implores the protagonist to put a stop to this, and towards that end, you are tasked with with getting to know the villagers in order to find a way to save the town. You have only one calendar year to complete one of nine alternate endings that will succeed in this. Should you fail, the game is lost and you must start a completely fresh file if you wish to try again. But for winning, you are able to save your file before trying again, which means you will get to keep all your inventory, tools, money, animals, and house extensions to aid in your quest--although all the villagers' affection will be reset to zero. This creates an interesting dynamic where the freer, more open-ended gameplay of classic Harvest Moon is still available to the player, but where there is still a more directed, structured component of play. At worst it is a quick breath of fresh air for HM fans; at best it is quite an original and exciting take on a series that we all already know and love.

  82. 3.3 Tools, Stamina, and Fatigue
  83.
  84. Save the Homeland has a somewhat smaller number of tools compared to many HM games, given that farming is not the main focus. They are listed below, along with their means of acquisition. While the player starts with most farming tools, some are acquired at Louis's Tool Shop (section 4.7), while two of the three fishing rods are acquired in events for the ending "A Fishy Story" (section 8.4).

  109. STAMINA AND FATIGUE
  110.
  111. The player-character's stamina (SP) and fatigue (FP) represent the amount of energy available for doing various farm tasks. These are related but separate values that change depending on the weather conditions, time of day, and tool used. In general, for every tool use, stamina decreases, while fatigue increases. Sleeping recovers stamina and reduces fatigue.
  112.
  113. At the outset of the game, the player starts with 100SP. Throughout the game, Power Berries may be obtained to increase this upper limit. Each raises the stamina cap by 20SP. By contrast, the player's fatigue starts at 0FP and increases when the player uses a tool in rainy weather or after sundown. Max fatigue is identical to max stamina--in other words, its upper limit is also raised by Power Berries.
  114.
  115. The table below shows the amount of stamina loss and fatigue gain under all weather and daylight conditions for all tools that affect SP and FP.

  140. 7 Villagers and Affection [AFFEC]
  141.
  142. There are a total of 19 characters in Save the Homeland. Befriending them is the primary means by which the game progresses, as most of the cutscenes necessary for each ending are triggered by reaching a certain affection threshold with one or more characters. The main methods for increasing affection are ones common to most Harvest Moon games, although there are a few features and quirks unique to StH. These will be detailed in this section.
  143.
  144. 7.1 Goddess Questions [GODD]
  145.
  146. Upon starting a brand new file, an introductory cutscene will play, during which the Harvest Sprites ask the protagonist to help save the village, and the Harvest Goddess asks the protagonist his name, the name of his farm, as well as three questions that probe his moral character. There are two responses to each: a "positive" and a "negative". Depending on how the player answers these questions, different villagers affection will be slightly boosted at the outset of the game, before even first talking to them. The questions and responses are as follows. The cursor's default is the positive answer.
  147.
  148.     Question 1: "A puppy has been abandoned in the rain. What would you do?"
  149.         > Take him home
  150.         > Ignore
  151.
  152.     Question 2: "Someone has thrown trash on the ground. What would you do?"
  153.         > Pick up
  154.         > Ignore
  155.
  156.     Question 3: "You've found someone else's money on the ground. What would you do?"
  157.         > Turn it in
  158.         > Take it home
  159.
  160. The following characters receive +15AP for answering the questions in the corresponding way. "Mixed" indicates any combination of positive and negative answers, regardless of how many or which of each. Martha, Parsley, Ronald, Wallace, and Woody do not receive a boost from any pattern.
  161.
  162.     Positive: Bob, Dia, Kurt, Louis, Nak
  163.     Negative: Gina, Joe, Katie, Nic
  164.     Mixed: Flak, Gwen, Lyla, Tim
  165.
  166. 7.2 Intros and Conversation [CONVO]
  167.
  168. 7.3 Gifts [GIFT]
  169.
  170. Being that the social aspect common to HM games is a major focus in StH, the affection system has a decent number of intricacies that aren't obvious at first glance. There is a pretty large number of potential gifts, although most of them are recipes which are only obtainable once the player has a kitchen. Because AP boosts vary widely across and within characters, I have decided to forego labels like "disliked" or "loved". Rather, in each character's gift chart, I have simply marked the precise AP boost in the left column, corresponding to the group of gifts that grants that boost in the right column. Keep in mind that some effects are counterintuitive, and do not necessarily reflect what the character's reaction seems to be. For example, Dia gets the heart thought bubble above her head for the Full Moon Berry, but it actually grants her -6AP.
  171.
  172. A few characters respond differently to certain gifts depending on their AP value at the time of gifting. Where the character receives a different boost past a certain threshold, the relevant gift(s) will be listed under the initial value, marked, and the threshold and the resulting alternate boost will be listed beneath the character's gift chart. All characters and all gifts in each "tier" are listed in alphabetical order. Note that these values represent AP gain when it is not the character's birthday--those numbers are catalogued in the next section.
