  1. Nowadays, designers most likely work with computers. The move from analog to digital means of production implies a rethinking of the notions of autographic and allographic in design. Digital media are strictly speaking allographic: a bit is a discrete unity, quantifiable as being either off or on, 0 or 1. It doesn’t matter whereas the computer is made of electronic or not; in fact the computer could be totally mechanical since it isn’t the the actual data but the tool for processing them, and it is up to the program to convert the code according to a convention previously defined its programmers. In short, a pdf file processed by a music player might turn into some noisy music.
