found out that Gulf Tanner was coming in

and that it was owned by a UAE

corporation we had some concerns about

turns out the couple that wrote the

extensive and in-depth report on Gulf

Taner and the UAE and their connections

with Iraq and Iran he was my neighbor as

a matter of fact he went out to the Gulf

Tanner property with me on the day of

the ribbon-cutting and we were out there

picketing we had signs and we were

picketing because we did not want them

there they were there's a lot of

backstory to it how far into the

well at the time that the deal while

even prior to the time that the deal was

sealed with the Port Authority there was

a an executive director who worked there

who realized that Port Canaveral is a

small inland port it really is more

suited to a it's a boutique port suited

or Cruise Lines and even though there

were some cargo operations going on

there there was mid Florida freezer

there was a cement company it was it was

minor it was minimal and so as a result

financially by inviting in Cruise Lines

and it was very successful the port was

in the black but somehow somebody within

the port organization decided that there

was a lot of money to be made by going

after this company Crescent Corporation

who had already attempted to I'd say

infiltrate that's kind of a negative

word about anyway built trading the

spaces of perfect sense because when you

infiltrate and there's a board of five

directors let's say you have to

undermine and if it's an elected

position if you appeal to their

pocketbook for their reelection

anyway somebody who worked within the

organization at Port Canaveral had

was keen to get Crescent in Crescent

corporation had tried to already

infiltrate and get a foothold in the

American ports they approached the port

of Jacksonville Jacksonville said no we

don't want you for their own reasons so

the existing executive director here at

Port Canaveral was approached by them

he said yeah I'll listen to what you

have to say so they had meetings they

had a meeting at least and this

executive director said you know this

isn't a fit with what we're trying to

accomplish here we don't want a big

cargo operation so he sent them away but

unbeknownst to him at the time there was

somebody within the port organization

who was undermining him and went to the

port commissioners whispering in their

ears essentially saying you know you

could make a lot of money this is it you

could make a lot of money so what they

ended up doing was firing the existing

executive director who had brought them

from the red into the black with the

cruise lines and putting this dye in as

the executive director and it was at

that point that the deal was sealed that

they got the Gulf Taner Crescent

corporation in and of course as we know

they were given a 35-year no-bid

contract to run cargo operations out of

Port Canaveral everybody here including

the local newspaper thought this was

wonderful oh it's gonna be great for the

economy we're gonna be hiring people no

that wasn't the case at all there was

absolutely no one there when we went on

and they're very they're very seldom is

there anyone there interesting yeah it's

it's a anyway there were some concerns

also from some of the local residents

who live on Merritt Island North Merritt

Island about the environment

environmentally sensitive impact that

cargo operations would have on the

Lagoon very very ecologically sensitive

so they were protesting this from that

perspective

a group of us were protesting it from a

national security perspective and I did

meet with the former executive director

who explained to me what his

understanding of how it all went down

which did not do anything to quell or

calm my concerns about it and I think I

read that there was a 40 million dollar

expansion of deepening the port and and

twelve million dollars for new you know

the infrastructure and so forth and this

is the same port that shares write the

port with the Trident submarine we have

the Trident submarine base in there no

to the naval ordnance test unit we have

submarines coming in from all over the
10:10
world to do test trials off of our coast

we also have the Cape Canaveral Air

Force Station right up the coast which

is you know they're launching sensitive

classified payloads on on Rockets on any

given day and it was just it was a kind

of consideration like what are you doing

you've got NASA here to I mean these are

and then Patrick Air Force Base just

down the road in South Cocoa Beach with

I mean they have tenants at Patrick who

are monitoring for nuclear explosions I
