Post EVO Pastebin Monday

So yeah, EVO was awesome. Thanks to everybody that watched Catherine, I had a blast streaming it. Wasn’t terribly happy with my performance there – I made dumb errors early in every set and was stuck playing from behind in so many games… That said, the event couldn’t be called anything but a success. We had 30 entrants, and managed to hold on to most of them, despite only having one setup. Huge thanks to PX for bringing his console and streaming equipment and allowing me to stream it to my channel.

That said, as much fun as it was, streaming it wasn’t cheap for me. I had no access to a headset, especially one that would handle that environment. Ended up getting a good Sennheiser headset to hope that it would do an okay job at handling noise, which, by all accounts, it didn’t okay. Had that been it, that would have been fine, but due to issues with getting tethering on my phone to work with PX’s equipment, we ended up having to use the Las Vegas Convention Center’s internet, which cost 80 dollars for the day for 1mbps internet. :/ I didn’t run ads at all either, which would have mitigated that cost some, but since every bit had to go towards the stream to make it work, my phone was used as twitch chat/the very few things I used the dashboard for. That said, it held out, and I’m happy people enjoyed the stream.

Smash 4 was shockingly successful for me… I made it out of Round 1 pools, which was a shock, especially after dropping R1 Winners pretty badly. Honestly, I’d considered completely dropping Smash and focusing solely on speedrunning after that. Then, something just clicked and I was one fire… Ended up getting knocked out by Aphro, but I’d cooled off considerably, given that I’d waited even over an hour to play after round 2 pools started (shoutouts to somehow getting two byes in losers bracket?). I still don’t want to make it a priority, I think, but it really is fun when I’m not playing terribly. That said, it’s amazing how bad I am when I’m not playing Rosalina, Robin or Cloud (ask PX lol)

While I was gone, a few major things happened which are both kind of cool but also just weird… First, Mulsqi apparently completed the P3P Maniac route, so I’ll be learning that in hopefully the next set of days. That should allow for a back to back P3P/P4G hardest difficulty speedrun, which is super cool. Hopefully, I can do this in a week or two – this should also be fun since this would get me super close to the 31 hour stream I owe Spike.

Something that’s weird is that my Catherine Babel run got beaten, and… I honestly don’t know how to feel about it. The time is *insane*, over a minute faster than my own, and only about a minute off my sum of bests. I’m wondering if I neglected learning optimal building somewhere, if he got lucky etc, but the time isn’t going to be easy to compete with. I may give it a few weeks before returning to the grind, just to see if he’s going to push that time lower before going in on it. It’s a weird feeling though, since I’d grown accustomed to being the Babel World Champion… I’ll figure it out soon.

Moving on, I’m planning on submitting for Deucecon, but not 100% sure on what games to offer. Catherine is an easy choice, but if Deuce wants something with a bit more meat to it, I can offer like… Yo-kai Watch? Crystal Chronicles? Persona 4 Golden Hollow Forest? Maybe I can offer a Sonic Heroes or a Sonic Adventure 2, but those aren’t particularly strong games of mine – I just don’t have a ton of marathon viable options, which is part of what sucks about liking longer RPG runs.

12 Hour Challenge: so I said my next one was going to be Nocturne… unfortunately, that’s not going to happen here, so it’s going to be delayed until I have time to play the game through casually… I have a few ideas for games, although I’m still sorting through possibilities. They’re a lot of familiar ideas – KH 358/2, Pokemon ORAS Dexnav, Atelier Shallie…
