If there was anything at all to be said in favor of her brothers, it was that they didn’t understand vengefulness, were incapable of it; that, too, was born of strong emotions, and more importantly, lasting ones. The best that the trio could manage were a sort of minor, transitory set of responses to stimuli.  A fleeting sense of upset when they were inconvenienced, that they could feel, but the feeling lasted no longer than the inconvenience itself, and had little more power or meaning than the reflexive jerk of a limb -- although its consequences could be quite a bit worse for the target of their upset. The roots of Judge’s anger went so far beyond the summons to Mariejois a few weeks ago -- went beyond even the quadruplets’ lifespan, and twenty-some years of anger and bitterness, pain and cheated pride, were so far beyond the boys’ grasp that they might as well be stars.
