- Word roots 3 - With your partners, think of one or two words to explain the meaning of each root\
- ego = self

- equi = same

- esth/aesth = feel/sensation (esthetic/aesthetic and derived words are related to beauty)
- eu = good (usually pronounced like “you”)

- extra = beyond
- fac/fact = make
- fer = move/carry
- flect/flex = bend
- fore = pre/front (these all come from the same root, and “first” comes from fore + -est)
- frac/frag = break
- fug = flee/escape
- funct = perform
- gen = make/create
- geo = Earth
- graph = write/draw (sometimes “gram” refers to the resulting image)

- ---
- We often have different roots (from different languages) with the same basic meaning, but the resulting words are used differently:
- supersonic / subsonic = faster/slower speed than sound
- ultrasonic / infrasonic = higher/lower frequency than we can hear
- pre = fore
- dict = tell
- If you foretell something, it’s more supernatural or magical than if you simply predict something.
- (In particular, there are often Greek roots with ‘h’ that correspond to Latin roots with ‘s’.)
- ---
- Most of these roots are not productive, meaning you can’t create new words with them.
- ---
- A compound is when you put complete words together: kid + nap = kidnap
- A portmanteau is when you put parts of words together: smoke + fog = smog
