  1. Suddenly, there was the briefest flash of reflected sunlight from either glass or shining metal. The hunter was familiar with long guns, from the old Hudson’s Bay trade musket to the famous Hawken of the Mountain Men, many of which had fallen into the hands of the Indians through capture. None of these had metal work that would reflect sunlight that sharply. Only a modern, custom-made rifle with a profusion of brass or silver, or a brassbound field glass could produce that brilliance.

  3. There was not time to analyze the thought. The sheer instinct it triggered had him diving back through the screen at the instant the crack of a high-powered rifle reached his ears. He was still falling when he heard the swish of the slug ripping through the canvas just above his head, then ricocheting and screaming away down the tunnel.
