  1. (BTW OC = Overwatch Contenders)
  2.
  3. Numbani: This time you have chosen NetEase CC to be your main partner, how would they work with Blizzard?
  4. Nate Nanzer: NetEase CC would be responsible for broadcasting and production, while Blizzard would be responsible for managing the tournament at large.
  5.
  6. NUMB: According to the OC rulebook, there is a clause where if an OC player were to be signed by an OWL team, the transfer fee would be 25% of the annual salary and signing bonus. How did you get to the number?
  7. NATE: We have been through much considerations regarding this. We based the number on the average salary of an OC player, and we also hope to cover some of the operating costs of the org, also this way any OC players will have a clear and simple path to go pro.
  8.
  9. NUMB: The transfer fee may be less than the annual salary of an OC player, wouldn't some orgs be unhappy to transfer these players to OWL?
  10. NATE: I somewhat disagree with the first point, since the typical salary of an OC player is not the same across all regions, in order to cater for the markets in all regions (i.e. all regions can't have the same salary for all OC players). We would like to take a global approach, and hope for the rules to be consistent in all regions. But if a certain region does need some changes, we'll look into it on a case-by-case basis. For now, I think the 25% number is fair for all regions.
  11.
  12. NUMB: The OC matches [for China] are scheduled to start on Fridays at 5pm [GMT+8] and Sundays at 4pm [GMT+8]. What considerations has Blizzard taken place for matches to be on non-consecutive days?
  13. NATE: When we created the OC schedule, we heavily considered the local market, and whether the timings will clash with the schedules of other regions. Currently, viewers can watch OC (regardless of region) every day of the week, and it caters to the viewing habits of the local audience. If necessary, we will make adjustments for the coming seasons.
  14.
  15. NUMB: OC uses the online broadcasting method, have you considered using the same broadcasting system as OWL?
  16. NATE: Of course we would like for OC to be broadcasted in the same way as OWL, but currently, some of the resources used by OWL are unavailable for use for OC. However, our future goal is for resources to be used for both OC and OWL.
  17.
  18. NUMB: How do you deal with factors of uncertainty, such as when a team disbands midway through the tournament?
  19. NATE: We have laid down several rules to deal with these uncertainty factors. For example, if an OC player gets picked up by OWL, we will allow the OC team to emergency sign an extra player. This is a numbers game, but we are prepared for this. So far OWL only has 12 teams, and each team can only have 12 players at most, so in total there can only be 144 players in OWL for now. In the OC, if someone leaves, another will take their place. It's a dynamic process. Also, the transfer window for OWL closes on 8 April, and these signings will take time to process. We've considered all of this.
  20. Additionally, these uncertainties will fade away following Season 2 of OWL, as we will be considering these problems when planning for next season. We believe that the OC will be an important compliment to OWL. We take China as a very, very important market, including Guangzhou and the entire region of China. We can bring OC to China because of the excellence of Guangzhou (p.s. NetEase CC is based in Guangzhou, and the interview was in Guangzhou). China has many more fans than anywhere else, I've been to LA and Shanghai. Seeing all these live tournaments, we would like to bring these tournaments to Guangzhou, where tournaments had never occured there before. If we have the fans' support and trust, we will be able to deal with these uncertainty factors, and promise the teams that they will not become problems for the OC.
  21.
  22. (p.s. I would like to extend my support for a Guangzhou OWL team. Please make that happen Nate)
