  42. A group of bandits stage a brazen train hold-up, only to find a determined posse hot on their heels.
  43. The clerk at the train station is assaulted and left tied by four men, then they rob the train threatening the operator. (They) take all the money and shoot a passenger when trying to run away. A little girl discovers the clerk tied and gives notice to the sheriff, who at once goes along with his men hunting the bandits.
  44. THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (1903) just might be the greatest western ever made. It's certainly my favorite. I have collected three prints of the film myself, albeit on video. I have also been fortunate enough to visit the Orange, New Jersey area where the film was shot, including the actual railroad used in the film. Prints are best when hand-tinted. Several video distributors have copies, and the always wonderful Turner Classic Movies screened a hand-tinted print earlier in the week of February 2, 1999-February 7,1999. See this one as soon as possible. Believe it or not, prints are not THAT hard to find. Visit any film museum to see if they have a good print. Again, several film distributors market the film on video, usually along with several other pioneer films from the turn-of-the-century. By the way, that's Broncho Billy Anderson as: The man shot on Railroad tracks, the Tenderfoot in the dance hall, and also as a robber. Tom London is the train engineer-the first role in a very illustrious career. Frank Hanaway was the first movie stuntman hired-it was for this film, as the robber who falls from his horse in the chase through the woods. A sidenote: Lubin Co. remade this film a year later in 1904. That should not be confused with this version, which is definative.
  45. Masked bandits enter a railroad office, and tie up the telegraph operator; they are planning &quot; The Great Train Robbery&quot;. When the approaching train makes its pit stop, the robbers jump aboard. The bandits find their booty in a box, which they blow up, after a bit of shooting. Next, the bandits force the train passengers to lineup, and loot their valuables. Meanwhile, the railroad operator has recovered, and rounds up a posse; then, they go after the robbers… <br/><br/>A landmark Edwin S. Porter film, with future western star Gilbert M. &quot;Broncho Billy&quot; Anderson. The lasting image, and film highlight, however, is Justin D. Barnes firing away, in the film&#39;s closing seconds. It still packs a punch, since the final shot is so unexpectedly different from the rest of the film. <br/><br/>******* The Great Train Robbery (12/1/03) Edwin S. Porter ~ Gilbert M.
