Whenever someone asked Fox what had happened to his eyes, he told them he had won a staring contest with the sun. Usually with an extra comment like, “I wish I could have seen the look on his face when I beat him!” or “Honestly, it was just blind luck.”

Sometimes he wondered what it would be like to see, but Fox guessed he had become more powerful because he couldn’t. Whatever the reason, Fox sensed Gill Asturias’s magnificent Aura well before she arrived, coming closer to Shade like the rising sun. Gill was almost too painful for Fox to focus on. But he forced himself to do it while he waited for her to be slowed down or for her blazing presence to be snuffed out by Velvet.

When Fox forced himself to “look” directly at Gill, he immediately detected lines radiating from her toward her twin brother, Jax. It was like a web stretching between them, linking their Auras, and it was magnificent.
