- Hello friends,
- Some of you may know my situation, some may have guessed something if you've met me in person. But For most of my life, I've been suffering from a neurological movement disorder known as "Dystonia". This causes me to have tremors in my body and causes me to have difficulty moving. I didn't actually have a diagnosis or know the name of what was causing my issues until just a few years ago. In that time I've gone to many specialists and tried many medications to try and mitigate the effects. Unfortunately this is a genetic condition with no "cure".
- This brings us to today and whats upcoming. During the month of March I'll be undergoing elective brain surgery in a procedure known as DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation). I wont go into all the details, you can check it out if you want more info. But basically I'll be getting electrical leads placed into my brain powered by a battery that will help my brain send the signals that its currently having trouble sending.
- I wanted to put this into writing and let everyone know whats going to be happening because:
- 1. I may be in and out of being online throughout the month of March
- 2. This is scary and a big deal. It's a pretty routine procedure for Dystonia/Parkinsons/ and other movement disorders but its still brain surgery with all the risks involved.
- 3. I know lots of people have been concerned or care and I want everyone to know there is a plan and that this is my best shot at finding a normal way of life again
- All the parties involved (Neurologist, Neurosurgeon, etc.) are all pretty confident this should have a seriously large impact on my ability to move and walk. Its not guaranteed because this disease manifests differently person to person, but My specific strain of Dystonia is known to respond well to this procedure and I have one of the best in the area at doing this surgery. It'll be a long process though, months of programming sessions to tune the device to my specific needs. I might not get back to normal in March, but hopefully we'll see big incremental improvements over the next year. Harli will be here for the month of March to help take care of anything I'll need during my recovery period.
- So yeah, if you've made it to this point. Thanks for reading, caring, and lets hope for the best. I'm really hopeful that by the end of the year we can reach that light at the end of the tunnel.
