  1. Tree of Life was derived from
  2. three concepts, or rather one primary concept
  3. and two derivative concepts “contained” or
  4. “concealed” within it. The primary concept was
  5. called consciousness, and it was said to “contain”
  6. within it the two complementary concepts of
  7. force and form.
  8. This Chapter builds on these ideas by intro-
  9. ducing the three Pillars of the Tree, and uses the
  10. Pillars to clarify a process called the Lightning
  11. Flash. It should not come as a surprise to find
  12. that the three Pillars are called ... the Pillar of
  13. Consciousness, the Pillar of Force, and the Pillar
  14. of Form. The Pillar of Consciousness contains the
  15. sephiroth Keter, Tipheret, Yesod
  16. and Malkhut. The Pillar of Force contains the
  17. sephiroth Chokhmah, Chesed and Netzach. The
  18. Pillar of Form contains the sephiroth Binah,
  19. Gevurah and Hod.
  20. The classification of sephiroth into three Pil-
  21. lars is a way of saying that each sephira in a Pil-
  22. lar partakes of a common quality which is
  23. “inherited” in a progressively more developed
  24. and structured way from of the top of a Pillar to
  25. the bottom. Tipheret, Yesod and Malkhut share
  26. with Keter the quality of “consciousness in bal-
  27. ance” or “synthesis of opposing qualities”, but
  28. in each case it is expressed differently according
  29. to the increased degree of structure imposed.
  30. Likewise, Chokhmah, Chesed and Netzach
  31. share the quality of force, or energy, or expan-
  32. siveness. Binah, Gevurah and Hod share the
  33. quality of form, definition and limitation. As
  34. one moves down the Tree from Keter to Mal-
  35. khut, force and form are combined together.
  36. The symbolism of the Tree has something in
  37. common with a production line, with molten
  38. metal coming in one end and finished cars com-
  39. ing out the other.
  40. In older Kabbalistic texts the Pillars are
  41. referred to as the Pillars of mildness, mercy and
  42. severity, and it is not immediately obvious how
  43. the older jargon relates to the new.
