  1. The first fingers of sunlight brushed the edge of Seela Weyr, caressing Narinth's leathery blue skin. The dragon shifted a bit, uncurling his body from the tight ball that warded away the night chill, spreading his wings and sprawling out his gangly limbs. He wasn't quite ready to open his eyes, but the morning air felt lovely, the last bits of coolness mingling with the warm rays.
  2.
  3. He rolled onto his feet, flicking wings and tail alike and scattering the dew on the weyr floor. His eyes squinted at first, adjusting to the harsh light of the sun peeking over the horizon. But before long, the world was cast in pinkish light, clouds painting the sky just above the expansive green landscape. Tiny figures moved below, and Narinth couldn't help but lick his lips a little. Heardbeasts. Not that he would go out and catch them. of course not. He was a good dragon. But it certainly put his mind on food.
  4.
  5. But that wasn't the only thing that came to mind. Staring out into the open air, his wings gave a twitch. It would be a foolish thing to try. Risky. But... Somewhere deep in his chest, he knew he was ready.
  6.
  7. He started by bounding deeper into the weyr, having to squeeze down as he got closer to his rider's quarters. He thumped his big head against the door a few times.
  8.
  9. Tyri wasn't sure what to expect, but it certainly wasn't the big, grinning head of her dragon.
  10.
  11. "Uh... Hey, big guy." She said, still rubbing her eyes, "What're you doing up so early?"
  12.
  13. <Tack me up!> He said, headvoice excited, practically vibrating.
  14.
  15. "What? But we're not training right now!"
  16.
  17. <C'mon! You want to fly? I can! I can do it! Let me show you!>
  18.
  19. This stunned her. Flying? Now? But it wasn't supposed to happen yet. Well... technically, it could. Narinth was about that age, wasn't he? She looked him over, wings long and sturdy, almost the length of his entire body. Yes... Yes he had to be able to do it by now.
  20.
  21. "...Sure, c'mon."
  22.
  23. Her hands shook as she tacked him. She would probably get in big trouble for this. But... she didn't care. If there was any way she wanted to first experience flight, it was like this. Just her and the dragon. And hey, if he wasn't worried, then why should she be?
  24.
  25. He kneeled down eagerly, and she climbed right on. Narinth turned his head, faceted eyes steely with determination, to the exit of the weyr. He galloped, full speed, wings folded in, until the earth under his feet ran out, Instinctually, his wings flicked out, quickly catching the air underneath him. Tyri yelped as they dipped a few meters, but neither fell, and soon Narinth and his rider sped towards the horizon.
  26.
  27. Tyri's auburn hair whipped behind her, the raw speed dizzying, trees and landscape and herdbeasts blurring into a mass of green underneath. But there was no fear, especially not with Narinth raising his head and bellowing in glee as he tested his wings. This... this is where the both of them were meant to be. Not stuck grounded in the Hold, head down living the dour, modest life expected of a young woman. But in the air. Free, with the wind blasting against her mask, barking out laughter and cheers into the morning light.
  28.
  29. Even the thought that she was given this opportunity for a reason didn't sour her mood. Bring on all the thread in the universe for all she cared. The important part is that she knew that she would finally mean something. That she would be the one to make a difference.
