  3. INT. CAR - DAY
  4.
  5. SUPERIMPOSE: HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT
  6.
  7. DONOVAN "DON" PAULSEN, (30) cries in a Ford Mustang.
  8.
  9. DON
  10. Jackie...
  11.
  12. He looks in his glove box and pulls out a photo.
  13.
  14. The photo is faded. Don sets it down on the dashboard.
  15.
  16. ASHLEY "ASH" PAULSEN, (19) knocks on the window.
  17.
  18. Don unlocks the door.
  19.
  20. DON (CONT’D)
  21. (grumbling)
  22. Any memorable parting words from
  23. your dear mother? Maybe about your
  24. brother?
  25.
  26. Ash places her hand on his shoulder.
  27.
  28. ASH
  29. Dad, she wasn't the person we knew.
  30.
  31. He looks down at the flask of whiskey in his lap. Don passes
  32. it to Ash.
  33.
  34. She shakes it.
  35.
  36. ASH (CONT’D)
  37. Still full. I'm genuinely
  38. surprised.
  39.
  40. DON
  41. Some things I have to deal with
  42. without this. The sandbox isn't one
  43. of those. This is.
  44.
  45. Don opens the glovebox. A 1911 sits in there with three
  46. magazines next to it. He takes it, flicks the safety on and
  47. puts in the back of his waistband.
  48.
  49. ASH
  50. That's a new one. I'm being
  51. serious.
  52.
  53. Don sits back and lowers the visor. He collects himself and
  54. takes a sigh. A sealed envelope falls out.
  55.
  56. He opens it up.
  57.
  58. DON
  59. Here's the new plan.
  60.
  61. He passes the envelope to Ash.
  62.
  63. ASH
  64. You sure about this?
  65.
  66. DON
  67. I have to be.
  68.
  69. He cranks the engine and drives.
  70.
  71. The two sit as Don drives through the rainy streets of
  72. Hartford.
  73.
  74. ASH
  75. Did you have a plan if this did
  76. happen?
  77.
  78. Don shrugs.
  79.
  80. DON
  81. I have one more card to play. That
  82. job in Phoenix line up for you?
  83.
  84. She nods.
  85.
  86. ASH
  87. Some Ford dealership, nothing too
  88. crazy.
  89.
  90. Don nods at this.
  91.
  92. DON
  93. It's best we get going. Jackie can
  94. keep my stuff.
  95.
  96. ASH
  97. Everything?
  98.
  99. DON
  100. Yeah. Ain't nothing there I can't
  101. replace.
  102.
  103. The envelope reads, "Knight Pharmaceuticals".
  104.
  105. Next to it, lies a folded job offer letter:
  106.
  107. Wrench opens it.
  108.
  109. Mr. Donovan Paulsen,
  110.
  111. You applied on OperatorWorks.net today for an opportunity in
  112. private security with a pharmaceutical company, Knight
  113. Pharmaceuticals located in Phoenix, Arizona.
  114.
  115. I wanted to reach out and schedule time to meet with you so
  116. we could speak further about this career opportunity. Are you
  117. available today or tomorrow sometime?
  118.
  119. We would need to allow a few hours to make sure you know all
  120. the details of the opportunity and I can answer any questions
  121. you may have.
  122.
  123. Please let me know what your schedule looks like so we can
  124. set something up.
  125.
  126. Sincerely,
  127.
  128. (Fancy signature here)
  129.
  130. Kim Williams
  131.

  138.
  139.
  140. INT. CAR - NIGHT
  141.
  142. Don's eyes widen as he looks around.
  143.
  144. ASH
  145. You never talked much about growing
  146. up.
  147.
  148. Don takes a nervous breath as he leans back in his seat.
  149.
  150. DON
  151. I never wanted to.
  152.
  153. Ash looks at downtown as the car rises on an overpass.
  154.
  155. ASH
  156. What's so bad about this city? It
  157. ain't Chicago-
  158.
  159. DON
  160. Oh, it's probably about the same or
  161. worse.
  162.
  163. Ash sits back in her seat.
  164.
  165. ASH
  166. What are we here for again?
  167.
  168. DON
  169. A lot of illegal shit that I
  170. probably should've gotten out
  171. sooner.
  172.
  173. ASH
  174. That sounds pretty cool, how
  175. illegal we talking?
  176.
  177. They get back on the main highway.
  178.
  179. DON
  180. Like the, "If caught I will never
  181. see the outside ever again"
  182. illegal.
  183.
  184. A box sits by the freeway.
  185.

  187. (muttering)
  188. ...Contact my 2 o'clock.
  189.
  190. Don's eyes widen as he presses the gas.
  191.
  192. The speedometer jumps from 60 to 80.
  193.
  194. He passes the box.
  195.
  196. ASH
  197. Dad?
  198.
  199. Don takes a deep breath as he takes one of his hands off the
  200. wheel. He takes another breath.
  201.
  202. DON
  203. Don't worry about it.
  204.
  205. His grip on the steering wheel tightens as he drives forward.
  206.
  207.
  208. EXT. STORAGE OFFICE - NIGHT
  209.
  210. The mustang pulls up. A U-Haul truck sits there.
  211.
  212. ASH
  213. This doesn't look very illegal.
  214.
  215. DON
  216. Wait here.
  217.
  218. Don steps out. RICKY, (early-20s) stands there.
  219.
  220. DON (CONT’D)
  221. Sorry about the wait, just got back

  229. Everything good?
  230.
  231. Ricky nods.
  232.
  233. RICKY
  234. Everything's in working order, sir.
  235.
  236. DON
  237. Good, thanks for the help man.
  238.
  239. Don goes back to the Mustang and opens the door.
  240.
  241. DON (CONT’D)
  242. Follow me in, we gotta load some
  243. things into the truck.
  244.
  245. ASH
  246. Some?!
  247.
  248. Don looks back at the truck.
  249.
  250. DON
  251. Y-Yeah, something like that.
  252.
  253. Don pulls up to a storage unit, stops and faces the back of
  254. the truck toward the door.
  255.
  256. He turns off the truck, takes the key out, and walks over to
  257. the unit.
  258.
  259. Ash parks the same way next to him.
  260.
  261. ASH
  262. You been Tony Montana behind my

  270. ASH
  271. Oh. That kind of illegal.

  273. Gun crates from World War One to Desert Storm are stacked
  274. across the room. A Maxim gun's barrel sticks out of a half
  275. opened crate. Wooden and dark green padlocked crates are
  276. unorganized and sit across the room.
  277.
  278. DON
  279. Christ. Ash, help me get this
  280. loaded.
  281.
  282. Don goes to pop the trunk of his Mustang and looks at a piece
  283. of paper that reads "Gun trust". Don pulls the ramp from the
  284. truck.
  285.
  286. The two start to load crates into the back of the truck.
  287.
  288. ASH
  289. You had these the whole time? What
  290. else were you hiding?
  291.
  292. Don grabs a dolly, places three crates on top of it that

  322. I swear, I could've sworn.
  323.
  324. He throws down his cigarette.
  325.
  326. MARCUS (CONT’D)
  327. Ain't those illegal?
  328.

  332.
  333. MARCUS (CONT’D)
  334. All that NFA, huh?
  335.
  336. Don looks into his eyes.
  337.
  338. DON
  339. Have a nice day, buddy.
  340.
  341. He tries to gently push past him. Marcus stands in his way.
  342.
  343. MARCUS
  344. I'm assuming the divorce didn't hit
  345. you too well either.
  346.
  347. DON
  348. Fuck off.
  349.
  350. Don looks down, not making any eye contact with Marcus.
  351.
  352. MARCUS
  353. Well, don't get mad at me. Your

  355.
  356. DON
  357. If you're banging her, I don't
  358. care.
  359.
  360. MARCUS
  361. Well I am. Call me Marcus.
  362.

  379. Ithaca model 37s, Browning Hi-

  381.
  382. Ash sits there and eats, curiously watching Don put check
  383. marks next to the guns on the list.
  384.
  385. ASH
  386. Everything there?
  387.
  388. DON
  389. Surprisingly.
  390.
  391. He sets the list down and massages his eyes.
  392.
  393. ASH
  394. Dad.
  395.
  396. Don's hand rests on a coffee cup.
  397.
  398. ASH (CONT’D)
  399. You never told mom about all this-
  400. Why?
  401.
  402. She finishes her meal.
  403.
  404. DON
  405. I've had a lot happen before you
  406. showed up.
  407.
  408. She nods. He looks at her.
  409.

  421.
  422. The lights and sirens come on.
  423.
  424. DON
  425. Oh shit.
  426.
  427. He stands up-
  428.
  429. The cruiser drives off.
  430.
  431. Ash's eyes widen as well.
  432.
  433. Don sits down and takes a sigh of relief.
  434.
  435. DON (CONT’D)
