- Jane woke up in her bed tired, she had spent most of the night tumbling in her bed going trough things in her head. Everything was so confusing, she felt like she needed to ground herself for a bit.
- She sighed deeply and rubbed her eyes and went to take a shower to wake herself up.
- She wiped her badge and clipped it in front of her robes and went to the common room and noticed the other prefects had started the meeting without her.
- "Good morning, you're usually up earlier."
- "I had trouble sleeping, but nevermind that."
- Jane walked in and took the list of things that had been brought to the prefects attention. She went trough the list and was disappointed.
- "So, we already split the workload, you'll talk to Ymous and then find out why we're losing points during potions; Me and Joan will talk to that ravenclaw and then go to the hospital wing for..."
- "No."
- The younger prefect stopped talking.
- "You deal with Ymous, I'll take care of the the rest of that."
- Jane noticed the other prefects stared at her and furrowed her brows
- "What?"
- One of the seventh year prefect coughed.
- "We thought you'd want to take care of Ymous' since you've been making it your mission so far..."
- Jane closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
- "No longer, I don't want to deal with him, someone else do it..."
- Jane looked around and took the list.
- "You deal with Ymous, I'll find out what happened yesterday and talk to Snape"
- Jane stomped out of the common room and looked at the list of things that needed attention. She had to read one of the things that people have been bringing to the prefects attention twice.
- She blinked in disbelief.
- "What..."
- Jane went to the courtyard and noticed there were a group of first year hufflepuffs playing gobstones on the grass. She waited for them to finish a turn before she walked up to them and made her presence known.
- The first year students went quiet and looked at her a bit worried.
- "We got report of a ravenclaw student causing grief in the courtyard, do you know anything about that?"
- One of the first year boys got up and started looking at the ground.
- "I told a prefect about it... He was being weird, we were just playing around the tree and he stopped us and started asking questions about trees... It was yesterday before dinner."
- One of the girls looked up and scoffed.
- "And making tree puns, it was weird..."
- Jane looked at the group of first years in a bit of a daze, she really had read the complain right, there was a ravenclaw who sat in a tree and harrassed first year students, but that hardly sounds like something to report in.
- "That doesn't sound too bad."
- The girl started pouting.
- "We wanted to sit in the tree too, but he drove us off when we couldn't answer his riddle."
- "Alright, I'm going to go find that ravenclaw and find out what he's about."
- The boy in front of her pointed at the tree in the courtyard.
- "He's in the tree right now, can you drive him off, so we can sit in the tree for once?"
- Jane looked at the ravenclaw and sighed.
- "No one is sitting in that tree, what if you fell and broke something?"
- "It's okay, I know episkey."
- Jane smiled at the confident girl.
- "That's good, but episkey wont work on broken neck."
- Jane left the first year students to play their game and walked up to the tree and took out the paper and read the ravenclaw student's name.
- "Ahem..."
- The ravenclaw in the tree turned to look at Jane.
- "treetings"
- Jane blinked at the boy for a bit and collected herself.
- "Are you..."
- She looked at the paper again.
- "Raul Boreal?"
- The ravenclaw smiled and shifted himself a bit in the tree and leaned towards Jane.
- "I will answer your questions, but first you answer my question, do you want a riddle or trivia?"
- Jane stared at the boy for a bit completely silently
- "...riddle?"
- The ravenclaw smiled widely.
- "I am a friend to the object of your longing, what tree am I?"
- "Rowan..."
- The ravenclaw stared at Jane for a bit.
- "No, the riddle is... The tree... OH."
- Jane looked at the ravenclaw annoyed, did he do that intentionally? She was getting tired of all the rumors, she'd have to deal with them soon, before things got out of hand.
- "Alright, I'll accept that answer, what do you want to know?"
- Jane shook her head and wanted to just focus on her duties.
- "Have you been harassing first year students?"
- The ravenclaw looked surprised.
- "Harassing, no... I asked them a riddle and they couldn't answer, so I didn't give up my spot."
- "They told me you drove them off."
- "I assure you, I am all bark and no bite, if they had shown respect for the tree I would've let them join me, but instead I asked them politely to leave."
- "You can't tell other students to leave, if I hear you causing trouble to hufflepuffs again I will talk to Flitwick about it."
- "Oakey, I'll leave them alone, Maple the riddle was a bit too hard..."
- Jane rolled her eyes and walked off annoyed.
- Jane looked at the list again and sighed.
- She started walking towards hospital wing, she had visited that place too often for someone else.
- When Jane arrived at the hospital wing she went to Pomfrey's office, the healer was there writing some papers.
- "Hello, Madam Pomfrey, I hear you have some hufflepuffs here..."
- Jane tried not to sound too annoyed, but she really didn't like visiting the hospital wing.
- the healer got up and walked past Jane.
- "Ah yes, but not Ymous this time."
- Jane frowned at the mention of the boy and followed Pomfrey to the infirmary, where there was a hufflepuff girl lying on bed and her two sisters surrounding her. When the girls noticed Jane was approaching they started talking among themselves quickly.
- Jane silenced the three girls with her presence and turned to look at the one lying on the bed.
- "Okay, what happened?"
- The girl on the bed hissed.
- "That snake talked to another girl!"
- "I told you he was bad news!"
- "A gryffindor, bah, should be a slytherin."
- "And that slytherin he talked to was completely flat!"
- Jane's head started hurting listening to the three girls speak rapidly over eachother.
- "Girls, calm down, I just want to know why you're in the infirmary."
- "I took a page from Merula's book and dueled him."
- To Jane's annoyance the girl's sisters chattering again.
- "She absolutely destroyed him, but he used a depulso at last possible chance"
- "How does he know depulso and not wingardium..."
- "It must have been luck!"
- "Girls, please... Calm down, this isn't helping. I still didn't catch who you dueled and exactly what they did."
- "That scorpion, Levi, my ex-boyfriend!"
- "Levi, who?"
- "He's gryffindor."
- One of the girl's sisters pointed over to another bed a bit further back.
- "He's lying on the bed over there."
- "Too far for me to throw anything at him, and they took my wand..."
- Jane scowled at the girl and shut all three of them up.
- "No one throws anything in the infirmary or casts any spells."
- Jane looked at the girl's sisters.
- "And you two are not helping, you should let your sister rest and calm down, not rile her up further."
- The two girls looked at the floor embarrassed.
- "I am extremely disappointed at you, duelling is forbidden and I will have to report this to Professor Sprout."
- "Your boyfriend duels all the time, and you don't tell him off."
- "First of all, I don't have a boyfriend, and secondly I scold every hufflepuff that breaks the rules, including Ymous."
- The girl's sisters snickered.
- Jane decided to ignore it.
- "I'm going to go get Levi's side of the story."
- She walked off, leaving the three hufflepuff sisters continue their rapid discussion.
- Jane walked up to the gryffindor lying on the bed.
- "Levi?"
- The boy turned to look at Jane.
- "Yes?"
- "I heard you were in a duel, I want to hear your side of it."
- The boy sighed.
- "It wasn't a duel, I was just talking to a slytherin girl about unrelated stuff and she runs to me shouting about flirting with other girls and then she shouts at me, we weren't duelling, though, she cast a spell on me and I used protego.."
- "And you used no offensive spells against her, like depulso?"
- "No! I don't want to hurt my girlfriend!"
- Jane got two different accounts on what happened, how would she know who told the truth.
- "What time did this happen?"
- "Yesterday, after the classes, I was waiting for her in the courtyard and talked to the slytherin while I was waiting."
- "Alright, I'll see what I can find out, but if you were caught duelling I will have to report this to Professor McGonagall."
- The boy just looked away when Jane left the hospital wing.
- She thought she might have an eyewitness, so she went back to the courtyard and walked up to the tree again, she was looking at the first year students playing gobstones when she got to the tree.
- "Treetings."
- Jane recognized the voice and turned to look at the boy sitting in the tree.
- "Ymous! What are you doing there?"
- "That weird ravenclaw asked me a riddle and when I answered it he said I have the privilege to sit in this magnificent tree, so I've been sitting here thinking about tree puns."
- Jane covered her face with her palm, he was the last person she wanted to see right now.
- "Where did that ravenclaw go?"
- "I don't know, probably went to the ravenclaw tower to think of harder tree riddles."
- Jane stared at Anon angrily.
- "Get down from that tree, right now!"
- "Okay, calm down, Jane.... I was thinking we could come here some evening and look at the stars while sitting here, it's pretty comfy."
- Anon smiled at Jane.
- "Or is that too acorny?"
- "I just told first year students not to climb up that tree and you immediately set bad example, go to the common room and stay there!"
- "What, and do what for a whole Saturday?"
- "Study!"
- Anon looked at Jane's expression for a while and relented.
- "Oh, Alright."
- Anon sighed and walked back in the castle.
- Jane felt a bit bad for losing her temper like that, but she didn't want to deal with him today and it seemed like none of the other prefects had caught him yet.
- Jane was annoyed her possible eyewitness was driven off, she was walking back in the castle when she noticed the first year students were still playing gobstones on the grass.
- "Oh, hello again, did any of you see the duel yesterday?"
- The first year girl looked up
- "You mean that quarrel between that couple?"
- "Probably, did you see what happened?"
- "Just a quarrel, the girl shouted at the boy for a bit and then she started throwing sparks at him, and he threw some back at her and then they went full Ymous and Merula and started throwing flipendoes."
- "What caused the argument?"
- "Some slytherin guy was talking with the boy, I heard it was a sarcastic compliment, that the naive gryffindor believed was genuine."
- One of the boys started gathering the gobstones into a bag and looked at Jane
- "Still, no reason for the girl to immediately assume the worst."
- "Thank you, I'll make sure proper action is taken."
- Jane paused for a bit.
- "You can climb on that tree if you want, but be careful."
- The three first year students looked at each other annoyed.
- "No thanks, we don't want to; after listening to that ravenclaw AND Ymous make stupid tree puns. The tree must have a curse that makes anyone who sits in it lame."
- Jane smirked and walked off.
- She took at look at the list again and started walking towards the dungeons.
- Jane knocked on a door to Snape's office and heard a monotone cold voice come from inside.
- "Enter..."
- Jane opened the door and was assaulted with the stink of all the ingredients on the shelves. She walked up to the desk, where Snape was scribbling something on parchment. Snape didn't raise his eyes off the parchment.
- "What brings a hufflepuff prefect to my office?"
- Jane frowned at Snape, she didn't like him much, he had that unpleasant scowl on his face and he seemed to enjoy bullying hufflepuffs.
- "You've been reducing more points from Hufflepuff recently."
- "That is a problem with hufflepuff students under performing even worse than usual."
- "What do you mean under performing, we've reviewed the scores of hufflepuff students, the problem clearly isn't the potions hufflepuff students brew."
- Snape was quiet for a while, most students were terrified at that silence. No one wanted to irritate Snape and listen to that pause.
- "Ms.Court, I did not know you were qualified to assess someone's scores in potions, especially scores that I myself gave to those students."
- "So you admit reducing the house points has nothing to do with student performance?"
- Snape raised his head from the parchment and stared at Jane, who stared back at the scowling potionmaster.
- "Do ellaborate, how did you come to that conclusion?"
- "You said hufflepuff students under perform and are losing points because of it, I said the scores don't reflect that and you admitted to giving those scores. So what is it, is it under performance or am I reading numbers wrong?"
- Snape was quiet and just stared at Jane.
- "Are you here to tell me how to do my job, Ms.Court?"
- "Oh, I don't know, do you need help with reading your own scores, because getting higher scores than last months doesn't really sound like under performance to me, yet you've reduced more points from hufflepuff than ever before."
- Snape paused again and frowned even harder than before.
- "My reducing points was completely justified, I don't need to explain myself to a student."
- "Prefect"
- "A hufflepuff prefect."
- "You reduced points from Hufflepuff, for under performing, while our average scores have gone up, while slytherin has gone down. but you don't reduce points from them, because you are playing favourites."
- "How dare you accuse me of playing favourites."
- "Then why are you reducing points from hufflepuff."
- "You know full well it's because one of your students is disrupting the classes."
- Jane closed her eyes and took a deep breath, she was about to hear about him again.
- "And you've not reduced the same number of points from Snyde or Murk for instigating all those incidents."
- "I reduce points from ms.Snyde or ms.Murk whenever there is a reason to."
- Jane scoffed.
- "I am going to have to ask you to rearrange the seats, more Snyde or Ymous away from eachother and there will be less incidets. Otherwise I will take this up to Professor Sprout and professor Dumbledore."
- Snape peered into Jane's eyes and scowled, but after a while he went back to writing on his parchment.
- "Very well, I will move Snyde away from Ymous..."
- Jane smiled, but didn't soften her expression at all other than that.
- "Thank you, professor" she said between her teeth.
- As Jane was about to leave Snape's office she heard the professor say something to her.
- "You've become a thorn in my side, more than you can possibly imagine Court... Don't come to my office again, just take these matters directly to someone else."
- Jane left Snapes office and walked away for a bit before stopping to take a deep breath. She had not expected it to go that well, she thought Snape would just deny everything and force her to go to Professor Sprout again.
- If Snape keeps his promise and splits Snyde and Ymous up, there should be less incidents, and less hassle for her related to him.
- Jane looked at the list again, there were still some stuff to do, but those could wait till it was some other prefects turn to deal with issues tomorrow. Jane had done everything she set out to do and decided to return to the common room.
- She ran up to another Prefect on the way there.
- "I had success with Ymous! I told him to go to common room and not cause any more troubles and he actually did. I can't wait to tell the others about this."
- Jane smiled at her excited colleague.
- "Well done. I am going to call it here, I talked to the ravenclaw and figured out what the incident yesterday was about, I need to talk to Sprout and McGonagall about it though."
- Jane walked in the common room and sat down on her favourite chair she tried to relax and closed her eyes, somehow she had gotten more stressed about her duties as usual.
- She jumped up a bit out of startle when she felt someone's hands on her shoulders, she looked up and saw Ymous had crept behind her and was rubbing her shoulders.
- "What are you doing?"
- Anon smiled at her.
- "You looked tense, I thought I'd help you with that."
- Jane was about to protest and get away from the boy, but instead she slumped on the chair and sighed. Maybe one massage wouldn't be so bad.
