- The following is a list of differences between the PAL (European/Australian) version of Luigi's Mansion and the NTSC-J/NTSC-U (Japanese/US) version of Luigi's Mansion. This information is based on the DeathJohnson's original pastebin (https://pastebin.com/PeY3y9G2) and http://www.mariowiki.com/Luigi's_Mansion#PAL_Differences. I've decided to make a more detailed difference listing (just becuase I like being super thorough).
- All changes are related to the Hidden Mansion, as the regular mansion are essentially the same (except for the A-Rank requirement that you will see below)
- ************************************
- Visual Differences
- ************************************
- * The mansion has been mirrored. This applies to Luigi as well; his hat will have a backwards "L" and he will vaccuum and hold his flashlight with his left hand.
- * The mansion is significantly darker and has been given a slight red tint to it
- - The red tint is noticable in boss rooms as their pallete will likely look off when you first look at it
- ************************************
- Ghost Layout Differences
- ************************************
- * (Most) rooms have changed ghost layouts designed to be more difficult to survive and clear. Usually they either have more waves, more ghosts per wave, tougher ghosts, or all of the above
- * Some rooms have added mice or flying fish to them as well.
- * Hallways have a lot more sparks (bomb ghosts), and they are scattered around in the hallways rather than being in concentrated areas.
- * Some rooms are a bit easier, however (Hidden Room comes to mind, Shy Guys instead of Ice Elementals and no bats).
- ************************************
- General Difficulty/Item Differences
- ************************************
- * The game spawns much fewer hearts from furniture than in NTSC.
- - Medium hearts are extremely rare.
- - You can still get hearts guaranteed by catching more than one ghost at once.
- * The 4 locations for Large Hearts do not spawn them anymore
- - A single large heart is in the courtyard, in the statue on the right side of the room
- * All Money Ghosts (Speedy Spirits, Gold Mice) now drop 30 coins, 20 bills, 1 gold bar, and a silver gem, instead of what they dropped in NTSC
- - This changes the Max% money totals as listed below:
- - Coins: 1,536 --> 1,686
- - Bills: 1,260 --> 1,425
- - Bars: 61 --> 76
- - Sapphires: 10 --> 5
- - Emeralds: 10 --> 5
- - Rubies: 10 --> 5
- - Silver Gems: 5 --> 30
- - Total money has been raised from 142,390,000 G to 186,440,000 G
- * The A-Rank requirement on the PAL version has been raised from 100M G to 150M G.
- - A-Rank is thus impossible on the Normal Mansion
- * Poison Mushrooms spawn much more frequently from furniture, and they also potentially spawn after catching ghosts
- - As far as I'm aware, only Garbage Can Ghosts spawn poison mushrooms on NTSC. All ghosts can in PAL.
- * 45 Boos are required to access the Secret Altar, rather than the 40 in NTSC.
- ************************************
- Boo Differences
- ************************************
- * Boos have various levels of changes in their health amounts, and some have been boosted to be faster than any Boo in NTSC.
- - General Rules (does not always apply):
- - Some Boos have significantly more health than normal, and receive a boost in speed
- - Some Boos have reduced health, and receive a stronger boost in speed
- - Booscaster (Toy Soldier Boo) is this to an extreme degree
- - Some Boos only have a slight increase in health and no other changes
- * Notable Boos that have been changed significantly (raised more than 1 tier of health or reduced health) and have boosted speed (+'s indicate their boosted speed rating from 1-3, which is by observation and may not be completely correct)
- - Bamboo [Parlor] (30 --> 150) (+)
- - Turboo [Nursery] (50 --> 30) (++)
- - Peekaboo [Butler's Room] (50 --> 100) (+)
- - Boodacious [Dining Room] (80 --> 150) (+)
- - Limbooger [Nana's Room] N/A (+)
- - Boonswaggle [Astral Hall] (100 --> 80) (++)
- - Shamboo [Projection Room] (50 --> 200) (+)
- - Boo B. Hatch [Breaker Room] (200 --> 100) (++)
- - Booscaster [Clockwork Room] (300 --> 50) (+++)
- - Underboo [Armory] (150 --> 200) (+)
- - Boolderdash [Cold Storage] (150 --> 300) (++)
- - Boolivia [Sitting Room] (100 --> 200) (+)
- - Bootique [Artist's Studio] (300 --> 200) N/A
- * Some Boo decoys have been changed from balls to bombs (and possibly vice-versa). I haven't looked into this in detail
- ************************************
- Portrait/Boss Ghost Differences
- ************************************
- * Bosses have various mechanic changes to increase their difficulty
- * Other Portrait Ghosts are unchanged mechanic-wise, but some have harder elements to it
- * Chauncey:
- - Rocking horses are much larger, and move in a wave motion instead of straight
- - Balls spawn from the back of the arena instead of the front
- - Chancey does his bounce attack much quicker
- * Bogmire:
- - The tombstone before the boos spawns 5 Skeletons instead of 3
- - Bogmire disappears much sooner than he does in NTSC
- - Some of the small shadows move much faster. You can identify them with a red outline
- * Boolossus
- - Luigi gets on his vaccuum in the beginning of the fight and rides it for the entire battle.
- - Movement is very slippery on the vaccum, and C-stick adjustments are very sensitve and are slippery as well
- * Van Gore
- - Each painting spawns 5 ghosts instead of 3
- * King Boo
- - From the 2nd attack on, the spike balls has a chance to explode earlier than usual, giving you a small time window to hit Bowser with it before it explodes
- - From my observations, they will always explode on the 2nd attack, and it will be random after that.
- ************************************
- Speedrun Route/Gameplay Differences
- ************************************
- General:
- - Rooms are routed differently (obviously) to deal with the different ghost layouts
- - Because fire is required to do the Tea Room, Astral Hall is done before Tea Room
- - Because of Projection Boo (200 Health), Projection Room is done last before Clairvoya
- - Area 3 Room Order:
- - Get Water from Courtyard
- - Under The Well
- - Biff Atlas
- - Use water to take out the fire covering the Tea Room door; Skip Tea Room
- - Grab Fire from hallway
- - Astral Hall
- - Observatory
- - Tea Room (Get more fire if needed)
- - Nana (Do BEFORE Petunia)
- - Petunia (Mirror Warp)
- - Twins/Area 1 Boos (Mirror Warp in Master Bedroom)
- - Bankshot (Do BEFORE Projection Room)
- - Projection Room
- - Clairvoya
- - Health management is extremely important, even moreso than in NTSC-U.
- - The only large heart is extremely out-of-the-way, so the only reliable and fast way of getting health is catching doubles/triples/etc
- - Since Parlor Boo is difficult to 1-cycle, it may escape to Neville's room. If you go to that room you may as well catch Nevile Boo and skip that room in Area 3
- - It is recommended to do Cellar Boo after the 3rd floor segment rather than immediately. Since it has 150 health instead of 100, there's a greater potential of losing it to Cold Storage (especially since the dust makes it tough to position). This lets you save warp after the 3rd floor segment without worrying about resetting the boo's health
- - If you cannot consistently 2-cycle King Boo, do not go for it.
- - Early Exploders make Slow-3-Cycles extremely slow, and it's often impossible to hit Bowser with them before they explode
- No OoB:
- - Because you need 45 boos rather than 40, you need to do extra rooms to get the boos:
- - Mr. Luggs
- - Biff Atlas
- - Slim Bankshot
- - Clockwork Boo (50 health!!)
- - SKIP Weston Boo (300 health and super fast, takes way too long, can be a backup if you lose Clockwork Boo to Jarvis's room, but that costs a LOT of time and is usually a dead run)
- - Pipe Room Boo
- - Do BOTH of Breaker Boo and Van Gore Boo instead of one of them
- - It is recommended to grab ice in the Tea Room on the way to the blackout. This makes Breaker Boo and Toy Solider Boo much easier to deal with because they're very fast! This isn't strictly required however.
- 100%:
- - The Telephone Room has Water Elemental Ghosts in it, so you need to get ice before going to the 3rd floor after the blackout
- - The best time is after watering the plant. Grab ice from the fridge; this also makes Breaker Boo and Toy Soldier Boo easier to deal with.
- - Due to the increased A-Rank requirement (150G), money is much tighter in PAL.
- - Every money ghost that's not completely out-of-the-way is caught
- - RNG mice in Kitchen and Tea Room are required as well
- - Blackout Speedy Spirits are too slow
- - Nursery Speedy Spirit is a potential backup, but it's still really slow to go for.
- - Generally, one other RNG mouse will also be wanted to have a safety net incase of bad RNG/lost Large Pearls
- - Getting Large Pearls is extremely important in PAL. Losing 2 means you must get one RNG mouse. Losing 3 or more requires another RNG mouse or Nursery Speedy Spirit.
- - Pearl Duplication is patched in PAL, so you cannot use this to your advantage.
- - If you're starting PAL 100%, it's best you get as much money as possible and not worry about a route.
