small bakery au things

* shirou drinks black coffee in the mornings. shinji bought him a fancy french press for his birthday and he really gets into trying new roasts and identifying their flavor profiles. when he makes his second cup he also makes one for shinji, which gets placed on the nightstand to lure him out of bed and downstairs for breakfast. (despite being snotty about the kind of coffee he drinks, shinji still likes cream or milk in it.)

* even though it’s hard prying shinji off of him to go downstairs to the bakery, shirou really loves being awake before the sun rises. he has a very comforting routine each day before he unlocks the door to welcome in his first customers.

* shinji is an insomniac and doesn’t hit a true r.e.m. cycle until about sunrise. this makes him very difficult to wake up and he often drags for a few hours in the morning, often falling back asleep or leaning against shirou and closing his eyes while he’s preparing breakfast. on sundays when the bakery is closed shinji can usually convince shirou to sleep in with him.

* shinji also manages to rope shirou into taking naps with him, which wasn’t an activity he was familiar with until they moved in together. it’s such nice bonding time that shirou becomes really fond of it. in the winter they nap curled up together tightly and in the summer they nap sprawled out, usually both diagonal with shinji’s head resting on shirou’s chest or stomach.

* shirou bakes treats for the neighborhood kids that hang out while their parents are working after school. he’s basically their ultimate hero and big brother, which shinji finds adorable even though he gets really weird and aloof around kids.

* when shirou starts to get soft shinji doesn’t say anything. shirou is so happy and busy he doesn’t even really notice he’s put on a few. it isn’t until he has his photo taken for a piece in the community newsletter on the bakery that he realizes in a “... is that me?” way. when confronted with it shinji admits that it didn’t seem necessary to bring it up because he’s happy and healthy, which are the most important things. considering how fussy shinji is over his own appearance, shirou is surprised, but shinji tells him that he thinks shirou looks good.

* shirou recently got a smartphone and shinji taught him how to use it and how to use social media to promote his business. he takes pictures of his baked goods and his regular customers to post on instagram with lots of cute emojis and hashtags.

* when they first started dating, shinji told shirou he didn’t like baked goods/desserts. at the time he was on a strict diet because he was always restricting himself from one thing or another and actually hadn’t tried many. in their time together shirou has worn shinji down by having him taste test things here and there and putting together flavors that he knows shinji won’t be able to resist. now if shirou makes something he knows shinji especially likes he has to be careful or shinji will drink an entire bottle of champagne and eat all of it (it’s been discovered he likes chocolate croissants, coronets, choux cream and cinnamon sugar twists.) in a fit of stress. or celebration.

* shirou has a small vespa-like vintage motorbike that is red and cream colored. he rides that or an actual bicycle for errands depending on the distance. shinji is terrified to drive the motorbike and doesn’t have a license so he takes public transportation to work.
