  1. [20:00] <06~Silentsword> Thank you for coming, everyone. This forum is called so that we can discuss the good and the bad surrounding Touhoucon this past weekend. While many people had a great time, there were hiccups, rough spots, and outright problems that caused things to be....less enjoyable for some than for others. It is our hope that by providing a public, civil session for discussion of this, we can clear the air of most, or at least some, of the
  2. [20:00] <06~Silentsword> issues, and keep them from repeatedly clogging up the channel
  3. [20:01] <06~Silentsword> Koyouko-Sakura is also here, and he is interested in our thoughts, and has agreed to listen - only - except possibly with regards to operational questions.
  4. [20:01] <06~Silentsword> It is our goal to include both the good and the bad in our discussion. Knowing what is done right is just as important as knowing what could use some help.
  5. [20:01] <06~Silentsword> What this forum is NOT is a place to simply have a fine whine. It is the expectation that, having identified the problems, there will be movement towards alerting the con in a civil manner, and possibly discussing solutions. It is my intent to reinforce this can-do, solution-driven geas in #conmeido, not to have complaining with no intent of improvement.
  6. [20:01] <06~Silentsword> Which also means that we should keep in the back of our minds what can, and cannot be done, and what is, and is not, in the control of the convention.
  7. [20:02] <06~Silentsword> Without further ado, I'd like to start by opening the floor to Pywackett-Barchetta. We're starting with him because he has already brought up specific issues that do deserve consideration, and that are appropriate and solvable as above.
  8. [20:02] <06~Silentsword> Py?

  11. [20:02] <06~Silentsword> Pywackett-Barchetta: Yours
  12. [20:02] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I'm going.
  13. [20:02] <06~Silentsword> mmkay
  14. [20:03] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Alright, first, chuckled a bit at "fine whine". Gonna try to keep things reasonable here and not vent too hard because extentuating circumstances made it a heavy weekend in any case.
  15. [20:03] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> First up. Most glaring issue. I went to help set up the gaming room only to find there weren't computers available. I hear that a sponsor backed out at the last minute, but in any case, it was an empty hall.
  16. [20:03] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> PtRWhatever was promoted to staff on the spot to help handle this.
  17. [20:04] <06~Silentsword> That's correct. They literally backed out on THURSDAY
  18. 10[20:04] * Patchimobile (~Android@qq-37CB2CBB.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) Quit (Connection reset by peer)
  19. [20:04] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> This meant collecting computers volunteered by attendees to compensate.
  20. [20:04] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> One of the staff immediately planned to commandeer my computer for use in a Street Fighter tournament before Henry had to convince them they were personal computers contributed for Touhou.
  21. [20:05] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> The one staff member also used particularly cruel phrasing when referring to those who'd be unable to attend the tournaments, spinning it as a business opportunity to get them to pay for more days.
  22. 03[20:05] * kyategg (~Vesperhou@qq-82D2F2AB.hstntx.dsl-w.verizon.net) has joined #conmeido
  23. [20:06] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Anyways. That was kind of left in the care of Henry and he did the best he could. I did not volunteer my computer a second day as it was reasonably banged up when I got it back Friday.
  24. 03[20:06] * Patchimobile (~Android@qq-37CB2CBB.hsd1.ma.comcast.net) has joined #conmeido
  25. [20:06] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I hear that more computers were contributed expressly for non-Touhou representation, but cannot confirm that.
  26. [20:06] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Should I continue to other topics, do my piece in one go, or pause here to let that be discussed and return to speaking when it's another thing to address?
  27. [20:07] <06~Silentsword> Well
  28. 03[20:07] * @Gandalph (~Gandalph@E80C879F.6659BDE6.DE8D7D97.IP) has left #conmeido (Leaving)
  29. [20:07] <06~Silentsword> I think just getting it all out is good
  30. [20:08] <06~Silentsword> We'll bcktrack afterwards
  31. [20:08] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Alright. Will continue, then.
  32. [20:08] <06~Silentsword> Thank you

  34. 03[20:08] * Hana sets mode: +o Gandalph
  35. [20:08] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> One chronic issue seemed to be lack of communication, especially about the schedule. On the first day I was told the convention was delayed for two hours.
  36. 03[20:08] * Kilgamayan (~kilgamobi@3550D48C:F5DE035A:ED7E4272:IP) has joined #conmeido
  37. [20:08] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Then that no such thing happened. Then that the game room and artist's alley were. Then that they weren't.
  38. [20:08] <06~Silentsword> First day Thuraday, or first day Friday?
  39. [20:08] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Friday.
  40. [20:09] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I went to one panel only to find that it'd been completely canceled and replaced with a screening of Boruto: The Movie, and my own panel was changed to be scheduled an hour early without informing myself or Alcor.
  41. [20:10] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I did find an email saying my panel was rescheduled... after my panel.
  42. [20:10] <06~Silentsword> Sent after your panel?
  43. [20:10] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> It was sent late Thursday night.
  44. [20:10] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Due to hotel internet I did not see it that nig,ht.
  45. [20:10] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> *night
  46. [20:10] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> The schedules on the info desks were never marked to reflect changes; very few of the events I attempted to attend were in the location/time suggested.
  47. [20:11] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> One security staff member checked to make sure my cane was for medical reasons, and to let him know if anyone gave me trouble over it. That was good.
  48. [20:12] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Artist's Alley power outlets were for rent only and exorbitantly expensive, but I'm figuring that's the hotel.
  49. [20:12] <06~Silentsword> Might or might not be, depending on the contract
  50. [20:13] <09@Gandalph> That's something that would have to be answered by the con staff I suppose
  51. [20:14] <06~Silentsword> And something that they can address next year, whether it'd be better or not
  52. [20:14] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> It's more of a personal preference, but there seemed to be an increasing lack of focus on Touhou as it went on. I kinda expected it to be one thing. Makes sense business-wise that it wasn't, but I really got the feeling that Touhou was sort of added to get the attention of a niche market willing to spend a lot.
  53. [20:14] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> As niche fandoms are often marketed to for that express reason; mainstream anime fans don't dig in their wallets as deep. Anyhoo.
  54. [20:14] <06~Silentsword> What do you mean, specifically?
  55. [20:15] <06~Silentsword> Was it just Artist's Alley (which...they don't ahve much control over - saying "TOHOU ONLY" would cut hard into their tables), or the con as a whole?
  56. [20:16] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> In terms of the Dealer's Room, I understand it was a choice by the individual booths what they brought; however, places like Good Smile Company had Touhou for display only and KanColle merch as the only thing available. Stuff like the gaming room tournaments being an esoteric selection (planned; I never saw any of it happen) and choice of completely unrelated guests such kinda felt like the Touhoucon name was
  57. [20:16] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> accepted as being somewhat off.
  58. [20:17] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I highly respect Rika Nakamura, but she seemed to be having a pretty awful time of it, and I wonder if it was just a matter of bringing in any contact they could find. It was a pretty massive guest list and honestly not much else to do if you weren't paying attention to those.
  59. [20:17] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Granted, I never knew about the photoshoots.
  60. [20:17] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Or the food court, until two days in.
  61. [20:18] <06~Silentsword> I thought the shoots were on the schedule?
  62. [20:18] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> There were quite a few lesser-known panels pit up against concerts; I get that it's kind of a sound decision when you're trying to wedge all you can in on the schedule, but I went missing a co-panelist for a while because of that.
  63. [20:19] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> On the far right corner and, unlike most of the con, no guidance pointing to where they were happening.
  64. [20:19] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> That I saw.
  65. [20:19] <06~Silentsword> There's not a lot that can be done about that. I do wish that they'd had a box you could check on the panel application "yes, I'm going to X", but at the end of the day, someone's going to be up against Yuuhei Satellite or X Japan or L'Arc en Ciel, and that's the way cons are.
  66. [20:19] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Yep.
  67. [20:21] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Finally, one of the things that really started kinda latching onto me as a suspicion, which may be totally off-base and if it's wrong, feel free to ease my mind. But judging by some extremely "rare" items showing up at sponsored booths and some of the names on the flyers going around, I couldn't help but worry some of the stuff I ended up with was bootlegged.
  68. 03[20:21] * Kosachin (~Kosachi@qq-16C2E1E7.cpe.distributel.net) has joined #conmeido
  69. [20:22] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> In the end, to sum it up, it feels like the con wasn't quite complete. It was an event of some sort, but I couldn't really call it a convention. And when everybody was supplying the game room themselves and the AA themselves, I couldn't help but feel like the goodwill of the Touhou fandom was kinda being... kinda being abused. Just to get us to show up to nothing in particular and spend our money.
  70. [20:23] <06~Silentsword> (Bear with me, I'm taking paper notes as well)
  71. [20:23] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I talked with people on the staff; there were plenty of fine people who had absolutely no sway on things. I don't think it's magically evil or whatever.
  72. [20:24] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I just can't in good conscience recommend it.
  73. [20:24] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> (Oh, and side note I'm being told to note, my panel was NOT originally scheduled to go against a concert.)

  78. [20:25] <09@Gandalph> Thanks for being as polite as you could be.
  79. [20:25] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> I've taken my venting out by punching virtual dudes. More fun than insulting people.
  80. [20:25] <06~Silentsword> haha, yes
  81. [20:25] <06~Silentsword> Do you mind if I touch on a couple before we bring Henry in?

  86. [20:29] <06~Silentsword> The one that comes to mind specifically is your comment about bootlegs. I think most cons will take complaints on bootlegs, and investigate? I know that both OTakon and ACen have thrown dealers out and permabanned them for knowingly selling bootlegs. Problem is having people on staff with the expertise
  87. 10[20:29] * Kosachin (~Kosachi@qq-16C2E1E7.cpe.distributel.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 360 seconds)
  88. [20:30] <06~Silentsword> Pywackett-Barchetta: IF they were to look at more mature cons, like OTakon, ACen, AB, u.s.w., do you think that some/most of these issues could be addressed?
  89. [20:30] <06~Silentsword> "If they were to look at cons that you know and respect", I guess is what I should say

  98. [20:31] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> But I give them credit for, in the end, honoring my Artist's Alley Helper badge price.
  99. [20:32] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Which I was informed was completely invalid by one staff member and yet accepted at the con itself.

  105. [20:33] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Hey, there.
  106. [20:33] <15+PtRWhatever> To get this out of the way first.. I am doing better... I think I'm up to about 1500 calories of food.. and I think i can stomach more.
  107. [20:33] <06~Silentsword> Thank god
  108. [20:33] <15+PtRWhatever> I am in a debt to my friends who helped me out.. big time there.
  109. [20:34] <09@Gandalph> That's good to hear, man
  110. [20:34] <15+PtRWhatever> Ok... so I think I should really begin........ with the events of friday morning
  111. [20:34] <15+PtRWhatever> as I think a lot of people might have a lot of questions about that and of what I actually did there.
  112. 03[20:35] * Gen|SleepingGirlsWanWan is now known as Genichiro
  113. [20:35] <15+PtRWhatever> As a preface... several weeks and months prior to the con... I let Joey know of what I could potentially bring.. and do for the con... though it would be at expense to get equipment out there.
  114. [20:36] <15+PtRWhatever> without mentioning a LOT of names... I got a general answer of... "That's awesome! Thank you... but we do have a local sponsor at likely much reduced cost."
  115. [20:36] <06~Silentsword> How much stuff does the road shou constitute now, that would have had to be shipped?
  116. [20:36] <15+PtRWhatever> when I did offer to bring some projectors... I got an instant.. "YES! FOR SURE! Bring those"
  117. 03[20:36] * Mami-Tomoe (chaosdunk@qq-5C8985E4.tukw.qwest.net) has joined #conmeido
  118. [20:36] <06~Silentsword> Like, rough guess, weight and number of packages?
  119. [20:37] <09@Gandalph> Road Show can probably do as many as 12 setups with existing equipment
  120. [20:37] <09@Gandalph> More if we get some other folks to donate stuff
  121. [20:37] <06~Silentsword> So four of the big 80-pound cubes, right?
  122. [20:37] <06~Silentsword> Plus a couple of duffels?
  123. [20:37] <15+PtRWhatever> Including Spares.(If some monitors were provided on site.).. we could get as many as 15 rigs
  124. [20:37] <15+PtRWhatever> The cubes just have perferables.... the towers are something else entirely
  125. [20:37] <09@Gandalph> I'm thinking several hundred dollars in each direction for shipping
  126. [20:38] <15+PtRWhatever> More like close to 1-1.5K
  127. [20:38] <09@Gandalph> Depends on carrier
  128. [20:38] <15+PtRWhatever> so it is a bit of a price tag.. one that neither Scott of myself can really afford out right
  129. [20:38] <09@Gandalph> USPS is cheaper, but slower
  130. [20:38] <15+PtRWhatever> very true
  131. [20:39] <09@Gandalph> Alternatively, we could have driven 6 days out and 6 days back with the equipment in a car
  132. [20:39] <06~Silentsword> Either way, four eighty-pound cubes, give or take?
  133. [20:39] <09@Gandalph> But fuck if I'm doing that
  134. [20:39] <15+PtRWhatever> in any event.. the con said no.. but the projectors was a huge yes.. so I agree to bring them.. and the con was going to acknowladge my bringing them
  135. [20:39] <06~Silentsword> I thnk we're getting bogged down
  136. [20:39] <09@Gandalph> Yeah, shipping logistics are something to discuss if we're going
  137. [20:40] <15+PtRWhatever> All I brought with me... was 3 projectors, their power cords... and a bunch of extra cables to ensure they would work with whatever the con had.
  138. [20:41] <15+PtRWhatever> I walked in thursday night... and was told the rigs were... "being worked over... and that I should come back at 9 the next day to setup."
  139. [20:41] <15+PtRWhatever> the room was due to open at 10, so this made perfect sense to me
  140. [20:41] <15+PtRWhatever> I didn't think anything more of it till I showed up the next day at 9 to find...... Nothing
  141. [20:42] <15+PtRWhatever> the room was setup like a dinner hall.. with all the round tables in the middle of the room, chairs around them
  142. [20:42] <15+PtRWhatever> the stage was far in the corner.
  143. [20:42] <15+PtRWhatever> the projector screen was up... (not in use)
  144. [20:43] <15+PtRWhatever> and that far left wall.... had a few long tables.
  145. [20:43] <15+PtRWhatever> Only the front wall had a few sparse games that were already setup
  146. [20:43] <15+PtRWhatever> (The wall immeiadiatly as you walked in.)
  147. [20:44] <15+PtRWhatever> the roughly 5-6 staff members there were essentialy all on phones and frantic as hell.
  148. [20:44] <15+PtRWhatever> Without getting into to many details... (As I want to respect the con's wishes about too much info.)
  149. [20:44] <15+PtRWhatever> the con was NOT at fault for this.

  154. [20:46] <15+PtRWhatever> and only IF... they wanted me to.
  155. [20:46] <15+PtRWhatever> I made it very clear..... that if they did not want me to do anything and to just place my equipment where ever they wanted me to.. that would be the end of it
  156. [20:47] <15+PtRWhatever> I said I could provide references and pictures.
  157. [20:47] <15+PtRWhatever> Joey then showed up.. providing an instant reference.... I showed the crew there some pictures of the road show.

  162. [20:48] <15+PtRWhatever> Yes.
  163. [20:48] <15+PtRWhatever> And I agreed to this term.
  164. [20:48] <06~Silentsword> By the way, it wouldn't have made a difference if they'd told you Thursday that the computers had fallen thought
  165. [20:49] <06~Silentsword> IT would have cost $2,500 to ship the computers cross country. For pickup. Plus insuring them for the trip. And without Gand.

  173. [20:50] <15+PtRWhatever> they questioned as to what I was doing for a bit...
  174. [20:50] <15+PtRWhatever> but what quickly changed their minds.
  175. [20:51] <15+PtRWhatever> was something Pi brought up about electicity
  176. [20:51] <15+PtRWhatever> the hotel and con are under some sort of very strict agreement about electrical use
  177. [20:51] <15+PtRWhatever> I don't know the particulars.. but it was when one of the hotel staff approcahed me about electircal use in the room.
  178. [20:52] <15+PtRWhatever> that the other video games room staff really started to trust me.
  179. [20:52] <06~Silentsword> We all remember what happened at AWA with blowing the convention center's breakers
  180. [20:53] <15+PtRWhatever> I was told that I had a very specific power limit and I could NOT go over.... they wanted to shut me down for rigs.. so I outright asked... "How much power do I have to work with? 20 ams? 40? how many watts?"
  181. [20:53] <15+PtRWhatever> I was told I had 80 to work with.
  182. [20:54] <15+PtRWhatever> but the guy was very hesitiant that I knew my stuff... obviously.. from Exp.. I gave him exact figures pretty fast.
  183. [20:54] <15+PtRWhatever> 5 laptops = 5-700 watts and 5-7 amps.

  186. [20:55] <15+PtRWhatever> The room took 4.5 hours
  187. [20:56] <09@Gandalph> I mean no disrespect, but this kind of detail is something that you and I should probably talk about when we're deciding whether we want to go next year or not.
  188. [20:56] <15+PtRWhatever> Next year?
  189. [20:56] <15+PtRWhatever> HELL YES.
  190. [20:56] <09@Gandalph> this is more a forum for discussion about general things that were good and bad
  191. [20:56] <15+PtRWhatever> The con chair, director of gaming, and programing walked in

  193. [20:56] <09@Gandalph> We don't want to get lost in small details here
  194. [20:57] <15+PtRWhatever> The chair looked at me and said, "You are going to be a serious contendor for transportation and fundind resourcses in the coming year"
  195. [20:57] <09@Gandalph> So, what did you find to be bad?

  207. [20:58] <09@Gandalph> thanks, man.
  208. [20:58] <06~Silentsword> I think what we want to hear is, "was there anything that you'd've changed, that you think the upper maangement needs to be aware of in order to make next year better?"
  209. [20:59] <06~Silentsword> Or, in the alternative, "was there anything so terrible that you'd just not go because of?"
  210. [20:59] <15+PtRWhatever> The scheduling issues can be obliterated
  211. [20:59] <15+PtRWhatever> if we run that room.
  212. [20:59] <15+PtRWhatever> 90% of the crap that happened in the games room
  213. [20:59] <15+PtRWhatever> was all due to supply and quality of equipment
  214. [20:59] <15+PtRWhatever> the other 10%

  218. [21:00] <06~Silentsword> Fair enough
  219. [21:00] <15+PtRWhatever> and I told those people that.. "It's your show"
  220. [21:00] <15+PtRWhatever> the tournement

  224. [21:01] <06~Silentsword> Agreed
  225. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> proper timing
  226. [21:01] <06~Silentsword> Joey and I talked a bit about that already, so that's for another time
  227. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> The use of a full projector to actually show peoples names AND TIMES
  228. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> for a match
  229. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> Ok!
  230. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> that's good.
  231. [21:01] <06~Silentsword> So what you're saying is that, even with getting violently ill all of Saturday, you'd still go back. Sound about right?
  232. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> If you and Joey have talked.
  233. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> Hell yes
  234. [21:01] <09@Gandalph> Software for that is easy if it's not already readily available.
  235. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> for the super good? That Tam concert.
  236. [21:01] <15+PtRWhatever> was almost worth the price of admission alone
  237. [21:02] <06~Silentsword> But there were issues, and you feel that they're resolvable

  273. [21:08] <15+Alcor> First, while the game room was a tragedy, the shitshow was caused by the vendors bailing, not the con
  274. [21:09] <15+Alcor> However, I wonder who thought it was a good idea to put a very loud theater event in the same room as the tourneys. All three tourneys were run by one dude, who could neither yell nor coordinate.
  275. [21:09] <15+Alcor> And my opponent was double-booked.
  276. [21:10] <15+Alcor> That Lunatic Theater should've b een in a panel room
  277. [21:10] <06~Silentsword> Alcor: Would you have accepted if the tourney runner had been miced and able to tone down Lunatic theatre when he needed the com?
  278. [21:10] <15+Alcor> Yes
  279. [21:11] <09@Gandalph> The optimal solution would be not to have a stage in the game room
  280. [21:11] <09@Gandalph> that's just kind of a poor setup of things
  281. [21:11] <15+Alcor> Although they did book one of the Lunatic Theazter guys as my opponent
  282. 14[21:11] <15+Alcor> And, the tourneys started 90 minutes late. I'm in AA. Some of us have elsewhere to be. I can't faff around that long waiting for Momiji to get his hat on. Also, speaking of lateness, the concerts also started late, fucking over panels that technically didn't overlap the original concert schedule.
  283. [21:11] <15+Alcor> Like Py's, which began at end of concert
  284. [21:11] <15+Alcor> he had folks coming in halfway through
  285. [21:12] <15+Alcor> I do not know why they were held up so I can't comment there.
  286. [21:13] <15+Alcor> Now, point 2. The staff. Most of the staff I talked to had no idea how to answer my questions. Basic ones. Like, "where is the Artist Alley" -- asked of the *info booth* on the first floor. And "When is badge check-in"? I got cheerfully told that Info Booth has no idea and isn't going to ask anyone else.
  287. [21:13] <15+Alcor> There was no communication or syncing. I got four different answers out of three staff folks anytime I asked a question.
  288. [21:13] <15+Alcor> Not acceptable.
  289. [21:14] <15+Alcor> There needed to be a briefing or something
  290. [21:14] <15+Alcor> for the staff
  291. [21:14] <15+Alcor> Also, someone had to call a manager just to tell me if my AA badge was separate from my general purpose con badge
  292. [21:15] <15+Alcor> Bottom line: educate the staff. They were headless chickens.
  293. 03[21:15] * Kosachin (~Kosachi@qq-16C2E1E7.cpe.distributel.net) has joined #conmeido
  294. [21:16] <15+Alcor> Also, the con in general, especially during leadup, promised and failed to deliver. I was told if I preordered in 2014 I'd get a VIP seat for Yuuhei. Nope, no one had a clue what that was about. Also, the room comps for AAs were only for latecomers. And the AA lord gave us a mis-sent scare email about the Alley Helper badges not existing
  295. [21:17] <15+Alcor> And dropped my paperes down a hole.
  296. [21:18] <15+Alcor> I h9onestly think the staff roster needs a looking at by the organization to see who isn 't doing what and how that can be fixed.
  297. [21:19] <15+Alcor> Point 3. General statement here of "this is my opinion." But if you ask *me*, this is Touhoucon.. It's about Touhou. It's not named Doujincon. There needed to be more panels, and more Touhou panels. This is also a con -- where is the Masq and Hall?
  298. [21:19] <15+Alcor> Why did the dealers barely have any Touhou?
  299. [21:19] <15+Alcor> Also, if the con *does* plan to deviate, I'd suggests renaming.
  300. [21:19] <15+Alcor> And what's up with the random guests that had nothing to do with Touhou?
  301. [21:19] <06~Silentsword> They can't tell the dealers what to sell, unfortunately. Or rather, they could, but they'd have a lot pull out. Cons have tried enforcing X% of Y in the past, and it ends poorly each time
  302. [21:20] <15+Alcor> Hm.
  303. [21:20] <15+Alcor> They can't select for certain dealers?
  304. [21:20] <06~Silentsword> Sure. But those dealers can sell what they'd like
  305. [21:20] <15+Alcor> Okay. So at that point sure. It's sad, but perhaps it's not the con's fault there.
  306. [21:20] <15+Alcor> But panels...yeah. They needed more of those

  309. [21:20] <06~Silentsword> Masq and hall are substantial undertakings, in all seriousness. They require dedicated staff, and a venue.
  310. [21:21] <15+Alcor> But...not to focus too much on personal beefs, my summing up statements are, where others saw inexperience, I saw incompetence. New cons live or die by good performance. This was a mess. I do not want to suffer the cleanup next year.
  311. [21:21] <15+Alcor> They had a year to clean up the *last* issues.

  326. [21:26] <15+Suukarin> Okay so
  327. [21:27] <15+Suukarin> I'd like to start by pointing out that my convention experience going into Touhoucon is 7+ years of Acen being my only con and then 3-4 years of really shitty tiny cons
  328. [21:28] <15+Suukarin> so 1) in comparison to cons roughly its size, 2) taking into consideration what the con was able to control in terms of available content, and 3) ESPECIALLY considering that it's a year two con, I think Touhoucon had a really solid variety.
  329. [21:29] <15+Suukarin> I think they may have overdone it on the number of guests, but the fact that they were able to draw in so many is a really good sign.
  330. [21:29] <15+Suukarin> I will also admit that I wish there had been more explicitly Touhou stuff in the dealer's room, but Touhoucon does not have the luxury that, say... Anime Detour has.
  331. [21:30] <15+Suukarin> Anime Detour regularly caps its attendance about 4-5 months out from the con, and is able to turn away artists that they don't think will fit well in their AA.
  332. [21:31] <15+Suukarin> Touhoucon is still way too small for them to be able to say "No, we don't like your portfolio b/c it's not Touhou, so we're not letting you in." You can bet those artists are gonna bitch about it later.
  333. [21:32] <15+Suukarin> Someone mentioned the Good Smile Company booth earlier and how they didn't have Touhou figures. I spoke with the GSC rep because I wanted the Mokou nendo, and they said most of the ones in the display case were out of print. So I'm not mad that they can't sell what they don't have
  334. [21:32] <06~Silentsword> I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to do that in the first place. Enforcing X% of Y has always been a huge undertaking, and I know that Otakon's AA staff the years they tried to enforce their verion of it ended up crabby and overworked because of complaints
  335. [21:32] <15+Alcor> it sounds amazing to me if it can be done without extreme hassle.
  336. [21:32] <06~Silentsword> It can't be
  337. [21:33] <15+Suukarin> And besides, the people who go to Touhoucon are not JUST interested in Touhou. And some people may be going just because they have friends going; no actual interest in the series itself.
  338. [21:34] <15+Suukarin> I also would like to point out that lining people up in the game room before the concerts and not having them congregate out in the hallway and create a major bottleneck for traffic was a really good idea
  339. [21:34] <15+Suukarin> And also that there were unsavory parties at the con that were VERY swiftly shown the door

  343. [21:36] <15+Suukarin> Yeah, I would want them to be less clueless about con operations, but I felt better knowing that they were at least trying to keep potential threats out.

  353. [21:40] <15+Alcor> yes.
  354. [21:40] <06~Silentsword> For the curious, I did some digging. Touhoucon is about where Otakon was in 1995 or 1996 in terms of size, right on the button

  360. [21:41] <15+Suukarin> I think Touhoucon has a significant amount of potential. They're a hell of a lot further along than Anime ZAP is and ZAP has 4 years seniority on Touhoucon

  362. [21:41] <06~Silentsword> 3 panels, 2 workshops. With a SUBSTANTIALLY higher number of guests (Otakon that year had 18 guests. 15 of them were north american)

  366. [21:43] <15+Suukarin> but yeah. As a casual attendee I was not as subject to the trials and tribulations of the con and I would go again at least once more before making a definitive "would/would not recommend"
  367. [21:43] <15+Suukarin> keep in mind that I say I'd go again when it's a +$500 venture for me and I'm broke
  368. [21:43] <06~Silentsword> Yikes
  369. [21:43] <15+Suukarin> so, tht should say something about the con

  374. [21:46] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> So I try to approach hiccups at cons with a mindset of "If I were in charge and this happened, why might it have happened?", and that has served me fairly well over the years, I think
  375. [21:46] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> In this case, it allowed me to divvy issues up into "shitty thing that happened that con should fix" and "shitty thing that happened that was bad luck:
  376. [21:47] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> And, while this is perhaps easy for me to say because of how little I fell prey to this weekend, I found myself putting most (not all) things in the second category
  377. [21:49] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I've seen multiple people wonder, here and elsewhere, about obtaining info on things that I learned at-con myself fairly quickly, for one reason or another

  379. [21:49] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> And what few questions I had to ask of the info desk, the guy actually radio'd Staff Ops for me
  380. [21:51] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I have noticed that there seems to be an inverse relationship between "how much info you got at-con" and "how much time you had to dedicate to cleaning up the VG Room mess", and I suspect I'm not the only one
  381. [21:52] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> Things I do think need to not happen again:
  382. [21:52] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> * Panels should never be changed without the panelist's consent, I'm not sure how it's 2015 and this is still happening
  383. [21:52] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> * Donated equipment should be very highly respected
  384. [21:52] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> (and not thrown to the wolves)
  385. [21:53] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> * Multiple events that require the one microphone in the room should not be run at the same time
  386. [21:53] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> (In a vacuum, I don't actually have a problem with running Lunatic Theater in the VG room)
  387. [21:53] <06~Silentsword> (I have a response to that as well)
  388. [21:54] <06~Silentsword> (For after you're done)
  389. [21:55] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I also have a personal problem with giving a Lunatic Theater color commentator position to a known lolicon, but maybe there were :circumstances: at play there or staff was completely unaware (possible) or perhaps I'm just a curmudgeon idk
  390. 03[21:56] * Island_Blade|concertmodeenrage (~androirc@qq-3153481D.bstnma.fios.verizon.net) has joined #conmeido
  391. [21:57] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> But beyond that, nothing else that I experienced comes to mind as something I couldn't explain away as bad luck or the standard level of miscommunication I see at every con
  392. [21:57] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I thought the lines in particular were pretty well handled all weekend - in particular, I hope the autograph system doesn't change one iota
  393. [21:58] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I thought the photoshoot session on Saturday did its best given the circumstances
  394. [21:59] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> And I never had to deal with anyone that was rude and/or inept

  397. [22:00] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> I'm already planning on not just going again next year, but staying through to Monday so I don't miss all the Sunday fun
  398. 10[22:00] * Island_Blade|concertmodeenrage (~androirc@qq-3153481D.bstnma.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Quit: who needs studying when you have Google)
  399. [22:01] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> That's about it from me, I'm amazed I had this much to say. Just reading everyone else's accounts legitimately makes me feel like I was in some sort of protective bubble all weekend because of how much of it completely flew by my head.
  400. [22:01] <15+Alcor> it's cool, I feel like some kind of Grinch now.
  401. [22:01] <06~Silentsword> Allright, thank you all
  402. [22:01] <09@Reisen-Udongein-Inaba> Well, things happen
  403. [22:01] <06~Silentsword> I have...just a couple to add
  404. [22:01] <15+Alcor> apparently I'm the only one who genuinely unhappy here
  405. [22:02] <15+Alcor> ah go on
  406. [22:02] <06~Silentsword> And then I'll turn it over to Sakura-Work and Joeybeta for final comment
  407. [22:02] <06~Silentsword> Overall, my experience closely parallels Kilga's. I've been in the trenches - semi-staff, judging, organizing, and so forth, since like 2003
  408. [22:03] <06~Silentsword> I especially liked the way that the lines were handled for the concerts and the autographs
  409. [22:03] <06~Silentsword> That said
  410. [22:03] <06~Silentsword> 1: there were some staff issues, and I definitely second, third, fourth, etc. the call for the staff to be briefed as a whole.
  411. [22:03] <06~Silentsword> 2: I understand the attraction of having a second event going on up on stage during game room and tournaments. However, the tourney manager needs to be able to override the ongoing event at will
  412. [22:04] <06~Silentsword> I strongly suggest that any future event in that situation be advised that they may be muted at any time, and that if this is a problem, they should consider applying as a panel, or not during tourneytime. It happened at AWA, it happened again here.
  413. [22:05] <06~Silentsword> I thik that Lunatic theature is a better match for that sort of thing than, say, a DJ
  414. [22:05] <06~Silentsword> Third: We had this issue in #cm last Otakon with someone, an Touhoucon had the same thing
  415. [22:06] <06~Silentsword> If equipment is going to be left out and the implication is that it is for general use, then the con, and the owner, need to be comfortable with other people using said equipment without the owner being right there
  416. [22:06] <06~Silentsword> I'm referring to the sewing room, which was only usable for its advertised purpose when the manager was there, which she wasn't most of the time, because she was away dealing with other things.
  417. [22:07] <15+Alcor> If you are referring to people talking about their computers being used by the con, please note the immense pressure for us to give out our machines.
  418. [22:07] <06~Silentsword> Nope, I mean the sewing room
  419. [22:07] <15+Alcor> This year?
  420. [22:08] <06~Silentsword> The manager had her personal machine set up there, which would imply that it was for general use, but it was only allowed to be used if she was there, and much of the time, she couldn't be
  421. [22:08] <11%Pywackett-Barchetta> Strange.
  422. [22:08] <06~Silentsword> It's literally "if you have a several hundred dollar piece of equipment you are not comfortable having out for general use, then don't have it out for general use"
  423. [22:09] <06~Silentsword> I mean, I understand why, but it's incredibly frustrating to see "cosplay repair room" on the map, but have a sewing machine that's unusable, and someone spraying some prety nasty solvents in there.
  424. [22:10] <06~Silentsword> Finally: Most mature cons have whiteboards or schedules posted outside of each room. Those schedules are marked up in the event of changes. I'd like to see that done.
  425. [22:10] <15+Alcor> ^!
  426. [22:10] <06~Silentsword> Overall, though? I had a blast, and I'm strongly, strongly considering going back next year
  427. [22:11] <15+PtRWhatever> *Jumps in
  428. [22:11] <15+PtRWhatever> Yes.
  429. [22:11] <15+PtRWhatever> Going back next year for me too!
  430. [22:11] <06~Silentsword> Okay
  431. [22:11] <06~Silentsword> Sakura-Work: Just informed me that cons in the West apparently are generally NOT allowed to post the hand-posted signs
  432. [22:11] <15+Alcor> Wha?
  433. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> Alcor: Different culture
  434. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> We're easterners
  435. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> Things are different, substantially so
  436. [22:12] <15+Alcor> Uh. But what is their reasoning?
  437. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> The venuses say "no"
  438. [22:12] <15+Alcor> I see.
  439. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> Anyway
  440. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> That's my fill. Great con, address these issues please, becuase you dealt with last year's...
  441. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> so
  442. [22:12] <15+PtRWhatever> Whoa! Would my hand drawn art poster be allowed there then?
  443. [22:12] <06~Silentsword> I don't know
  444. [22:13] <06~Silentsword> That's for the con to decide later
  445. [22:13] <06~Silentsword> Without further ado, I'm going to give the floor to jowybeta and Sakura-Work to finish up
  446. [22:13] <15+PtRWhatever> Interesting thought.
  447. [22:13] <15+PtRWhatever> *steps back

  456. [22:14] <15+Joeybeta> I honestly wish this wasn't the time to talk about this honestly
  457. [22:14] <15+Sakura-Work> Well, I'd firstly like to say Thank you all for your feedback. Even Alcor!
  458. [22:15] <15+Joeybeta> I don't mean to be rude or anything but I still feel dead from the weekend
  459. [22:15] <15+Sakura-Work> Joey: You want me to go first?
  460. [22:15] <15+Joeybeta> you can talk if you wish

  464. [22:18] <15+Sakura-Work> I'm very glad to hear that my staff did an amazing job, as I treid to select as much as I could for experience, professionalism and ability.
  465. [22:18] <09@Gandalph> Which portion of th con is under your control?
  466. [22:18] <15+Sakura-Work> Ah yes, I should note that I was the Manager of Line Control.
  467. [22:19] <15+Sakura-Work> As a manager I did get to oversee staff, but only in the LineCon department.
  468. [22:19] <15+Joeybeta> Ah yes, the whole lining against the wall in the gaming room was a god like idea if I do say so myself :v
  469. [22:19] <06~Silentsword> I wish more cons did that
  470. [22:19] <15+Sakura-Work> And as only a manager I cannot speak for the convention itself, and am only giving my personal opinion
  471. [22:19] <15+Joeybeta> having lived in the gaming room the entire weekend, I see it's worked out
  472. [22:20] <15+Sakura-Work> Yes. Thank Otakon Vegas for some of that.
  473. [22:21] <15+Joeybeta> I'm thinking of going there myself next year to see how that worked out
  474. [22:21] <15+Sakura-Work> And well, some things (like giving my panel) went incredibly smoothly and easily.
  475. [22:22] <15+Sakura-Work> There were certainly issues, and I think that after what's been said here, telling all of you that I plan to talk to those above me about how Info Desk was run will hopefully ease some of your concerns.
  476. 03[22:23] * NKKS (~webchat@3982490:8734C502:F0BCD3E5:IP) has joined #conmeido
  477. [22:24] <15+Sakura-Work> However, as a con I think I've seen us try out more new things than any of the other cons I've worked for in the past year
  478. 10[22:24] * crescentia|laptop (~crescenti@qq-79E9E8EB.bltmmd.fios.verizon.net) Quit (Ping timeout: 365 seconds)
  479. [22:25] <15+Sakura-Work> Perhaps the only exception being AX, but they're a huge convention with lots of resources to get new space; we were constrained by the limits of what a new con can do.
  480. [22:26] <15+Sakura-Work> An Examples of this isthe social media posts in Japanese
  481. [22:27] <15+Sakura-Work> However, the thing that sticks out most in my mind is a certain thing I was prone to saying immediately after the last convention.
  482. [22:27] <15+Sakura-Work> I stopped saying it for a while, because I was afraid of the large promises it entailed. I really felt like I was selling people Martian Real Estate if I did say it.
  483. [22:29] <15+Sakura-Work> But ultimately, I think for some people, we did it. For at least a few fans.... TouhouCon was a land of Magic and Wonder, truly Gensokyo on Earth.
  484. [22:29] <15+Sakura-Work> I've had multiple friends come to me crying, or exhausted emotionally, or absolutely euphoric.
  485. [22:30] <15+Sakura-Work> And while I'm sad not everyone was able to do this, I think it shows the promise the corpus of the staff have as a whole. We need to figure out how to use our resources and expand effectively, certainly, but conventions can do this.
  486. [22:31] <15+Sakura-Work> It was my worry that we wouldn't be able to repeat it at all. Now I see I was somewhat foolish, and really needed to push for making it this way for everyone.
  487. [22:31] <06~Silentsword> Hopefully that works out, and hopefully, we've given you some specific pointers as to where to start working.
  488. [22:31] <15+Sakura-Work> Oh certainly.
  489. [22:34] <06~Silentsword> Anything that you want to add in response or closing, either of you?
  490. [22:34] <15+Sakura-Work> And I really, really was glad that you guys were accepting of me; I'm glad I got to meet several of you, and though going out to the east coast isn't currently in my power, you'll see me at ACen after I get finances sorted out.
  491. [22:35] <15+Sakura-Work> some of you*

  494. [22:37] <06~Silentsword> Then at this point, I'd like to say thank you to everyone who spoke up, and to everyone else for your patience and understanding.
  495. [22:37] <06~Silentsword> We do not intend to make this a regular thing, but I do want to emphasize that I'd rather hear these things out in public than let them boil and fester.
  496. [22:37] <06~Silentsword> And with that, I bid everyone a good night. Thank you again.
