  1. [19:42] Artaghh says, "Well kid."
  2. [19:42] Artaghh says, "Night falls on Dusk soon."
  3. [19:42] Artaghh says, "There'll be a new dawn some day, bu'...well, the deck's stacked agains' us this time."
  4. [19:42] Artaghh says, "Always was, to be sure."
  5. [19:42] Ascalon Zanders says, "I've stood the vigil and seen the sun sink. "
  6. [19:43] Ascalon Zanders says, "I can only assume we will escape to Obsidia."
  7. [19:43] Artaghh says, "It's a damned shame, bu'....we held out a long time."
  8. [19:43] Artaghh says, "Decades o' war agains' the whole island."
  9. [19:43] Artaghh says, "An' it took us gettin' old an' dyin' off one by one to finally ge' chipped awayu."
  10. [19:44] Artaghh says, "Aye....Obsidia's where I plan'ta head. Tha' an' Bauk are safer."
  11. [19:44] Artaghh says, "Nae'ta soun' like a defeatist or anythin'."
  12. [19:44] Artaghh says, "I'm jus' a bit too old to pretend anymore."
  13. [19:44] Ascalon Zanders says, "I've known this city was doomed for most of my life."
  14. [19:44] Ascalon Zanders says, "To hold onto false hope is foolish."
  15. [19:45] Ascalon Zanders says, "Obsidia has more resources but Bauk would be easier to defend."
  16. [19:46] Artaghh says, "Aye...ye' are young Ascalon, I'm sorry ye' couldn' see Dawn when the sun rose above this city."
  17. [19:46] Artaghh says, "At our height, our strength was greater than the o'er nations combined."
  18. [19:47] Artaghh says, "Bu' too many died, an' the res' grew old."
  19. [19:47] Artaghh says, "Bu' as long as the memory'a the sun's warmth remains in the hearts'a true Dawnsman....there will always be ano'er sunrise."
  20. [19:48] Artaghh says, "My brothers an' I built this tavern...thirty nine years ago."
  21. [19:48] Artaghh says, "An' sayin' goodbye'ta it will be harder than leavin' wha' this city became."
  22. [19:48] Ascalon Zanders says, "I changed my epithet, my titlte when I became a Paladin. Paladin of the Dawn, we Zanders have always stood with Dawn and I wanted to pay homage to that. "
  23. [19:49] Ascalon Zanders says, "I won't lie growing up in this city, seeing it eat my friends and spit them out? I won't be sad to watch it burn."
  24. [19:49] Ascalon looked around at the tavern.
  25. (Ascalon Zanders)
  26. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  27.
  28. [19:50] Ascalon Zanders says, "Who all built this tavern? "
  29. [19:50] Artaghh says, "Ghosts now."
  30. [19:50] Artaghh says, "Brothers once."
  31. [19:51] Artaghh says, "Siegmeyer Engel, Avo Loupe, Bill Billson, an' me'self."
  32. [19:51] Artaghh says, "One of our firs' customers was a red haired teenager."
  33. [19:52] Artaghh says, "Mmm."
  34. [19:53] Ascalon Zanders asks, "Who?"
  35. [19:53] Artaghh says, "Your father."
  36. [19:54] Ascalon chuckled.
  37. (Ascalon Zanders)
  38. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  39.
  40. [19:54] Ascalon Zanders says, "Shame this place was so empty when I was a teen."
  41. [19:54] Artaghh says, "Aye....those tha' frequented it once have died or passed on."
  42. [19:54] Artaghh says, "An'...more the better."
  43. [19:54] Artaghh says, "This place remains brightest as a memory'a wha' Dawn once was."
  44. [19:54] Artaghh says, "The light has been fadin' from this city for years....perhaps since the day Alastor died."
  45. [19:55] Artaghh says, "They blamed this city's troubles on him....an' ye' lookin' back on it all..."
  46. [19:55] Artaghh says, "He was a scapegoat."
  47. [19:55] Artaghh says, "The council's foul fingers needed someone'ta recycle. Same as they tried'ta recycle Sors."
  48. [19:56] Artaghh says, "Oh...how it burns to think abou' it."
  49. [19:56] Artaghh says, "Cho had Alastor killed, an' played us all like goddamn fiddles."
  50. [19:57] Artaghh says, "We sucked up those honeyed words, believed the city was truly in decline."
  51. [19:57] Artaghh says, "Bu' tha' was when our strength was greatest..."
  52. [19:58] Artaghh says, "When the world did'nae wish to burn us to the ground."
  53. [19:58] Artaghh says, "Tha' was when Dusk began, I think. Nae recently....nae wit' the coup."
  54. [19:59] Artaghh says, "Bu' when Sors an' I were put in command as two more showy puppets fer the theater'a the immortals."
  55. [19:59] Artaghh says, "I just wish it didn't take my whole life'ta see it."
  56. [20:00] Ascalon Zanders says, "..."
  57. [20:00] Ascalon Zanders says, "Freya told me some of this. When she convinced me to help her. She wanted to challenge Sors as her father had and wanted the Oscuri to back up her claim."
  58. [20:01] Ascalon Zanders says, "I can't hate Arthur he gave me two more years with Lirien. Using Azreal's gifts but if it wasn't for his hubris and desire to rule the city once more perhaps we wouldn't be burning right now."
  59. [20:01] Ascalon Zanders says, "I think Dawn... Dusk was always going down this path and the good souls who tried to resist it where crushed."
  60. [20:02] Artaghh says, "There was a time where we were growin', ya know. Nae decayin' day by day."
  61. [20:02] Artaghh says, "We had reserves, had might....had coin."
  62. [20:04] Artaghh says, "Ye' aren' wrong though....this was always Dawn's fate. Dusk's fate....servin' these last fourty years was oft like tryin'ta hold closed a gushin' wound wit' ma bare hands."
  63. [20:04] Artaghh says, "Day by day, we bled more, an' day by day I tried to fix somethin' tha' couldn' be."
  64. [20:07] Artaghh says, "Hmm."
  65. [20:21] Ascalon Zanders says, "It was the fight that had to be fought for Azreal."
  66. [20:28] Artaghh would drink steadily from his mug of ale as he glanced across the table at young Ascalon, seeing in him just briefly the visage of long dead Chroma before shaking his head with tired, heavy movement. Taking a long, pensive puff from his corn cob pipe, the commander would turn his one eyed glance to the familiar bar of the Daylight Hall, to the ghosts that had once filled the tavern with warmth and laughter that was long gone from this city, supplemented by cold despair. As his vision trailed across each empty stool, familiar names filled his head as he began to speak, perhaps to Ascalon, or maybe, just maybe to those that were gone.
  67.
  68. Siegmeyer, Avo, Fethi, Chroma, Lunk, Batt, Icarus, Bill Billson and Larry Longbrow. The fools of the Daylight Hall.
  69.

  71.
  72. I, Artagh o'da Green Hill, swear'ta protect an' serve'da people'a Dawn in'ae Legion'o Daybreak - Tae respect ma superiors in it, tae march'ta war for its sake, an' to win its battles by any means necessary, in this life, an' the next.
  73.
  74. Artaghh would, for once, amend his oath.
  75.
  76. "But this ain' Dawn, I have no superiors left, there's nowhere'ta march, no battles we can win, an' I will not waste what's remainin' o' ma life on suicide. I have served thirty nine years, an' my watch is through."
  77.
  78. Ser Artaghh would nod to Ascalon as he solemnly began to remove the various pins upon his cloak. The one that had denoted him a knight, then the pendant of a paladin, and at last that of the eternal of Dawn. Glancing at the handful of metal in his hand for a time, the old soldier would shake his head before tossing them to the creaky, wooden floorboards with a metallic clatter.
  79.
  80. "Get out of here while ya can kid. This thing we were doin', playin' a' pretend like it weren' rigged from the start? It's done."
  81.
  82.
  83.
  84.
  85. (Artaghh)
  86. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  87.
  88. [20:43] Ascalon sat stiffly in the chair as they'd been speaking to Artaghh. There where no cups filled with ale for the young Zanders. Rarely in fact did they ever drink. Even as the city was being besieged and destroyed they knew that drinking would solve nothing.
  89.
  90. It was as the old veteran began to speak that their focus narrowed back in on them. There it came the oath to Dawn, given at the cities peak. Though there was little doubt the old man spoke to the dead as much as to Ascalon.
  91.
  92. It was a beautiful thing to the young Paladin. An ideal they'd struggled to uphold their entire life. The ideal of a Knight the ideal of a solider of Azreal. Yet, what came next brought tears to the Oscuri's eyes.
  93.
  94. Not the gushing tears of someone who'd lost their wits and given into grief. No the soft trailing droughts of one who saw the crashing of an ideal. The breaking of what had been. The dashing away of what could be in time.
  95.
  96. "Artaghh, they're not going to stop just because Dusk will burn. They're going to hunt us down. Exterminate us from the very face of this island."
  97.
  98. As they spoke their hand came up to wipe away the tears that'd fallen. Now wasn't the time for grief nor was it the time to give up. With a shaky breath they'd speak a single phrase.
  99.
  100. "Death is a gateway." Old scripture of Azrealism. Spoken in the moment as the world crumbled around the only bastion of the Morning Lord upon Agartha.
  101.
  102. "We could rise again Artaghh, we could struggle and claw our way back to greatness. We have to run from this coffin but we could build something better. Revive a dream of the past when the code of a Knight meant something and our city wasn't a prison locking away monsters."
  103.
  104. As they spoke they'd look towards the scattered metals upon the floor a hand coming up to touch their own badges of office. "The Lion Stands with the Dawn. That's what I've said my entire life. It's the motto of we Zanders. This Dusk settles but a new Dawn could rise. If we tried."
  105.
  106. It was an attempt at the least, a vain reaching for hope in a world aflame. "If you lead us North we could escape before the Alliances armies got here. Fortify the volcano, and go quite and let them focus upon Briarlocke or Akasaha."
  107. (Ascalon Zanders)
  108. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  109.
  110. [21:05] Artaghh would sigh deeply as he glance across the table at Ascalon, nodding solemnly to the young Zanders as he heard out their plea. flashing a missing toothed, tired smile to the young Oscuri as he took another swig from his mug. In truth, it'd been a long time since he'd felt much from common liquor, only the hardest droughts could provide him the oblivion he oft sought with drinking.
  111.
  112. "Ye' weren' listenin' well enough Ascalon. I've annulled e'ery part'o ma oath bu' one. I will protect my people. Contingencies are already in place, an' I'd sooner fall on ma own blade than bend knee'ta Levengard cunts. I am a knight, an' such is my duty even if I have no legion'ta serve."
  113.
  114. The old swordsman would puff steadily on his corn cob pipe then, his remaining eyes glancing solemnly over the tavern that had held some of the best memories of his life. Leaving it behind would hurt him more than anything else, he suspected. The city's faces had changed dozens of times, but this tavern on top of the mountain had always remained pristine in his mind even as it fell to disrepair. It's time, much like Artaghh's, much like Dawn's, had passed.
  115.
  116. "Mmm, I always hated the heat. Bu' the volcano's our bes' bet at a fresh start. We'll need'ta keep ours heads low, nae cause a ruckus. Bu' I'm thinkin' a tradin' republic migh' be wisest. Freedom'o religion, a' belief, a' creed an' code. Where debates'a theology an' philosophy dunnae end wit' blood, bu' progress. A place of higher thought an' progress, nae dogma. Like Dawn pretended'ta be. How Dawn should'a been."
  117.
  118.
  119. (Artaghh)
  120. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  121.
  122. [21:12] Ascalon's zeal was starting to return as he heard the older man's response. That was when they'd been corrected perhaps they hadn't been paying attention. It was hard sometimes.
  123.
  124. "I was writing up that in the code of laws Sors asked me to write. A place like what Crafthold had been could be what the island needs. A place of pure progress where law and order maintains the safety of our people."
  125.
  126. Standing the Oscuri would look towards the empty tavern. Their gaze turned towards Artaghh once again. "Let's gather what Knights remain and start getting the civilians out. We could give an order right now and begin the migration... What about Sors?"
  127. (Ascalon Zanders)
  128. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  129.
  130. [21:14] Arlei had no idea what was going on, but snagged another beer from the bar, chugging it down.
  131. (Arlei Zanders)
  132. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  133.
  134. [21:30] Ser Artaghh would nod steadily as he crossed his burn scarred, bandaged arms over the black plate of his cuirass, humming to himself with contemplation as he puffed away steadily at his corn cob pipe. He was getting too goddamn old for this shit, he ought to have retired decades ago when he was still in his prime. But it seemed at least for now, his people still needed him, and he wasn't going to abandon them for a quiet life as long as they still needed his help.
  135.
  136. "The trading republic'a Noon, as much a refuge fer the outcasts an' undesirables'a the land as it'll be a place'a progress an' higher thought unbound by politics an' preachin'. Where a man has the right to his own thoughts an' blood wit'ou' bein' judged or slain. Crafthold failed because no one wanted to defend those two faced snakes in the end. It forsook the neutrality'ta the island's conflicts tha' was the source'a its strength. Maybe we can do be'er, maybe we'll fail. Bu' ain' like there's much'ta lose in tryin'. Ge' the civilians'ta Obsidia, this city's lost."
  137.
  138. (Artaghh)
  139. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  140.
  141. [21:46] Arlei swigs down her fifth beer. Then her sixth. Then her seventh. Today has been a really, really fucking annoying day. Five people needed medical treatment in Gehenna; she'd been locked in that damn clinic for days. At least she had Tybalt and Tahldrig with her.
  142.
  143. "Ar-" she begam, realising she'd slipped into speaking Feral Ookami.
  144.
  145. "Noon? That's. . a surprisingly good name for a new nation. Obsidia is the best play for it. I've been thinking about it for years now; I've got a whole squad of Levengard defectors ready to take it. Tahldrig, Sima, Saba's kid probably. My kids will help too. Not the biological ones, they're too young; Inari, Terpsichore, Freya. An' I keep in contact with Dogslayer still. Don't tell Sors." she chuckles, putting a finger to her lips.
  146.
  147. Spirits, she was absolutely fucking bladdered.
  148.
  149. "Crafthold? No. Don't blame the nation for being two faced. The lighthouse was erected without us knowing. We hated it. It forsook our neutrality, as you said, and we -loved- our neutrality. Est and Iosefka screwed the pooch without lubrication. They ruined our livelihoods. They ruined our lives, and only some of us managed to recover. Poor Esso, he tried, but he was left in charge of a fucking dumpster fire." she growled, slamming her empty beer down on the table. She summoned another beer over from the tavern; the innkeeper on duty at the moment knew better than not to leave one out for her to take.
  150.
  151. "The patriots will help. Sima Kang will help. Tahldrig will help. Skye and Inari will help. Saba might help. My Ascie will help. Zethra might help. If we form another nation upon Obsidia's decaying remnants, as long as it holds the values oftrue neutrality? We'll be in." he nods, chugging down his beer, summoning another one.
  152.
  153. Two years of sobriety due to Ascalons, uh, obsessions? She had some time to make up for.
  154.
  155. "I'll help. I'm pretty sure I can convince Thera and Noel to let us be in peace up there. And I'm -damn- sure I can convince Calael to let us relax. Hel, maybe Ohtli will be able to give us some pointers!" he cackled, grinning over towards his wife and his mentor. Both of them were very, very important to him, and he wanted to make them both proud.
  156.
  157. "It goes without sayin', everythin' I say here will be kept quiet. If ya' want, I can convince the spooks upstairs to leave fer' a while. Extra privacy." he chuckles, his grin everpresent.
  158.
  159. Now, Arlei had an unnatural aura around them. Her raw emotions wereworn on her sleeve; she'd lost her edge as a spy after falling so deeply for Ascalon. Everything she felt was able to be felt by everyone in the tavern, almost like Elayna's lifestream manipulation. It had grown stronger over the years, nigh suffocating. Infectious. Right now? She felt ecstatic happiness. Warmth. Comfort. Contentedness. Peace.
  160.
  161. Hopefully, her wife and paladin were able to feel it all.
  162. (Arlei Zanders)
  163. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  164.
  165. [21:56] Arlei was a goon who talked to much that was something that Ascalon knew to be true. However, they where such a good-hearted one. That was true. The Paladin took a breath and looked towards Artaghh. They themselves where ready to begin the prep for the retreat however.
  166.
  167. A soft smile turned towards Arlei waving a small hand towards them. They where adorable in their- They where drinking again. How frustrating.
  168. (Ascalon Zanders)
  169. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  170.
  171. [22:02]
  172. {LOAD GAME}
  173.
  174. [22:07] Ascalon Zanders says, "I don't hate Sors but he's to high profile. This idea of a new crafthold has fascninated me since Arlei tild me about it as a child."
  175. [22:07] Ascalon Zanders says, "We'll need to figure out a new system of everything but so long as we're smart we can do it."
  176. [22:08] Artaghh says, "Sors works be'er from the shadows."
  177. [22:08] Artaghh says, "He always has."
  178. [22:08] Artaghh says, "Bu' aye, goin'ta take plenty'a thought to hash it all ou'."
  179. [22:08] Artaghh says, "But there's no time like'ta presen'."
  180. [22:08] Artaghh says, "For now, we need'ta ge' our people away."
  181. [22:09] Ascalon Zanders asks, "Should we try to inform Sors first?"
  182. [22:11] Artaghh says, "Mmm...aye. Nae a bad plan."
  183. [22:11] Artaghh says, "Wors' case, I'll figure some way'ta contact'm."
  184. [22:12] Ascalon Zanders says, "Alright..."
  185. [22:16] Artaghh says, "Well, no time like the present."
  186. [22:16] Ascalon Zanders says, "Let's get to it"
  187. [22:17] Artaghh says, "Star' spreadin' the word, check Bauk an' Obsidia fer the stragglers."
  188. [22:17] Ascalon Zanders says, "Arlei we're getting the kids out of the manor and moved up to Obsidia"
  189. [22:17] Artaghh says, "An' if ye' fin' Sors, let'm know the plan."
  190. [22:17] Ascalon Zanders says, "Understood."
  191. [22:17] Artaghh says, "Now, les' move."
  192. [22:19] Artaghh says, "Ah, the square is lively."
  193. [22:19] Godfrey Vishkar says, "Dusk, Dawn- Same charade, different fucking day."
  194. [22:19] Artaghh says, "Tha's heartening."
  195. [22:19] Fera Fengari says, "And you're.... Strange. I still remember that time Tenko said something about you putting a crystal inside yourself."
  196. [22:19] Oskar Aime exclaims, "Why wouldn't it be? It's the day before our Glorious victory over our many foes!"
  197. [22:19] Artaghh says, "Mmm."
  198. [22:19] Ascalon Zanders says, "Mmm."
  199. [22:19] Ascalon Zanders says, "Glorious indeed."
  200. [22:19] Mutt says, "North."
  201. [22:19] Oskar Aime whispers something.
  202. [22:19] Fera Fengari asks, "Mm?"
  203. [22:19] Artaghh whispers: Aye.
  204. [22:19] Adonis Lowe says, "You do what you've gotta, sometimes. You and Nym were getting stronger, so I had to as well."
  205. [22:19] Artaghh says, "Well, no time like the present kids."
  206. [22:20] Mutt says, "Nevermind."
  207. [22:20] Oskar would lean in, giving a nod before speaking softly.
  208. (Oskar Aime)
  209. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  210.
  211. [22:20] Fera Fengari says, "Tell me 'bout it later if you don't wanna say it now."
  212. [22:21] Oskar Aime whispers something.
  213. [22:21] Fera Fengari says, "Now that gettin' stronger thing.... I've begun to stall a bit."
  214. [22:21] Artaghh says, "I won't lie'ta any'a ye'. This city is goin'ta fall."
  215. [22:22] Fera Fengari asks, "Mmh? What'd ya' say Old Man Artaghh?"
  216. [22:22] Oskar takes a step back after delivering his report and leans on the lamp post.
  217. (Oskar Aime)
  218. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  219.
  220. [22:24] Ascalon Zanders says, "Pay attention and listen. The city isn't long for this pathc of Eternia."
  221. [22:25] Arlei Zanders whispers: [ we're in vc in the Penta server btw. You're still in it.]
  222. [22:25] Arlei Zanders whispers: [ we're in vc in the Penta server btw. You're still in it.]
  223. [22:35] Mutt says, "Quite quiet."
  224. [22:36] Fera Fengari whispers something.
  225. [22:37] Lupo Buckers says, "...Just sparin' a moment of silence for the fallen."
  226. [22:37] Akasha asks, ". . ?"
  227. [22:37] Mutt whispers something.
  228. [22:37] Akasha says, "I hadn't asked you be silent."
  229. [22:37] Lupo Buckers says, "N-No I meant the fallen soldiers."
  230. [22:37] Akasha says, "I see."
  231. [22:37] Ser Artaghh would cross his burn scarred, bandaged arms behind his back as he released a steady sigh, taking a long, thoughtful puff from his corn cob pipe as his one eyed glance turned steadily over the crowd of youths and vigilants that occupied Dusk's square. His smile was missing toothed, tired, but warm and proud as his gaze flicked about those gathered. It was a heartening sight to see those still brave enough to remain.
  232.
  233. "Dawn an' Dusk alike have been at war wit' the world, on an' off, for as long as I've been alive. Even before it. These walls have survived countless sieges, endless battles, an' more trials than any city ought'a have had'ta undergo. But this battle isn't one we're goin'ta win, not on this battlefront, not this day. "
  234.
  235. The commander would gesture his hand with a sweeping motion across the crowd as his glance turned briefly towards thefamiliar coast of Dawn, towards his homestead and the soil he'd tended for years.
  236.
  237. "But it ain't these walls that make it home. It's our people, our determination'ta think free'a dogma an' moral superiority tha' corrupts this island's thought. And as long as we live, as long as we bare in our hearts the truth'a Dawn, o' Dusk, a' knowledge without boundaries, it will never be conquered."
  238.
  239. The old knight would cross his right arm over the black plate of his cuirass, bowing his head to the group with a sad, heartfelt smile.
  240.
  241. "The city will fall, but its people will not. There have always been contingencies in place wit' the expectation tha' the day'a reckonin' will finally come, an' it seems tha' at last that day has come. Upon the ashes'a Obsidia, a fresh sun will rise. A new day after this long night'a endless war. A home once more. Those that choose not to follow, that walk their own way, will nae be shamed."
