- In November, a Pokemon Red runner accidentally found a bug that allowed him to get instant text for a large portion of the early game, saving up to a minute. After some discussion, community leaders decided to allow this bug for any% glitchless runs. This was a reasonable decision, as the bug cannot definitively be considered a glitch.
- Since then, many Red runners have attempted runs using strats that maximize the time save from instant text. The strats vary slightly, but they are quite different from pre-instant text strats, and they are almost universally disliked for the following reasons:
- 1) You take about 40 more steps in Mt. Moon to pick up 2 TMs, increasing the variance in encounter RNG.
- 2) You lose instant text whenever you menu, so healing and switching out for safety are massive time losses that usually can't be considered when going for a good time. Thus, instant text itself is a major run-killer.
- 3) As a consequence of #1 and #2, the early-game has very little decision making. You get the 2 TMs, you get instant text and then you hope for good luck -- no balancing of risk/reward, no variation of when to menu, etc.
- 4) Good execution during the two instant text sections is mostly about mashing, since many neat menuing tricks do not work while instant text is active.
- 5) It is possible to accidentally open the menu when trying to select a move during fights. This is normally a 40-frame time loss, but with instant text active, it is probably run over because you lose instant text.
- Short version: We tried instant text, and it didn't work. That's not necessarily a reason to ban it, but I think it's bad enough to warrant the creation of a new category: any% glitchless (no instant text). The rules would be the same as any% glitchless, plus this one: "Declining to buy the bicycle is not allowed, as it causes instant text."
- Horouichigo, another Red runner, has already started doing runs with these rules. I will soon be joining him, and I will be attempting to run any% glitchless (no instant text) and any% glitchless at the same time. If the run is good through Route 3, I will continue without instant text in hopes of getting a run I'm proud of. If the run is bad, I won't care about it, but I'll try instant text so that I can keep playing without resetting (and possibly get an instant-text PB). This approach will make Red much more runnable for me, as I'll be able to enjoy runs while playing optimally.
- I don't really care whether speedrun.com adopts this category, but I hope other runners consider this approach if they're struggling to enjoy runs with instant text.
