- Read this: https://vverma.net/succeeding-in-rutgers-cs.html
- so it's all focus on the summer internship now!
- and a few specific things will give you a really solid chance of landing a top level internship
- 1. CTCI
- 2. linux
- 3. webapp
- 4. personal site
- 1. ctci (cracking the coding interview) - develop and sharpen interview skills
- 2. linux - makes your CS skills useful/applicable in every way, very attractive thing on tech resume
- 3. webapp (flask/node) - learn how to develop a useful application that can extend to _all_ applications
- 4. personal site - purely for advertising yourself and showing you know design/UX
- 1. ctci is the basis of tech interviews - go through this, but make sure you also get me or whoever to give you mock interviews in person
- 2. knowing your way around linux environments is essential to staying afloat in dev/production environments which abound in the industry. I asked someone who works on iOS apps at viacom, to do some basic directory traversal in the terminal, and he was like "cd? what does that do?"
- Even as an app developer you need to know how to set up systems properly and manage your apps on linux servers. Like say your app's not working and it's not the app's fault, you need to debug the system the app's running on. Follow guides A and B
- A - http://www.funtoo.org/Linux_Fundamentals,_Part_1
- awesome 4 part UNIX terminal tutorial that my mentee Mihai has been writing extensive notes on:
- B - http://www.tldp.org/LDP/sag/sag.pdf
- chapters 2, 3, 7, and 11 are all you need to read - this helped me get my job at OSS.
- Will get you familiar with how Linux OS generally works at a high level
- 3. webapp in flask/node: build a url shortener or a basic CRUD app with python flask or nodeJS
- - http://www.tutorialspoint.com/python/ Use this to learn Python.
- - https://techarena51.com/index.php/flask-sqlalchemy-tutorial/
- Good tutorial for beginners. You need to become familiar with a dev language (python) and also the concepts behind a framework enough to actually build an app that does whatever you want. And the concepts are surprisingly very general. With Flask, it's literally just logic inside get and post if statements inside
- routes of the flask app.

- 4. Online presence (website and community involvement)
- It's good to have a solid personal site that has your resume and is basically your own section of the internet. Also super awesome to be a community leader because that sets you apart from everyone else and is the best testament to your contributions (and networking is important).
- To summarize:
- - go through CTCI on your own b/c it has Q+A, and get us to give you mock interviews after
- - sit down sometime to focus on going through the 2 Linux tutorials I sent, play around with commands and become familiar with the environments
- - follow that flask tutorial to build a web app and become kinda familiar with how apps work
- After this, you can put the app you build on your resume, and then you can follow this guide: https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-deploy-a-flask-application-on-an-ubuntu-vps
- How To Deploy a Flask Application on an Ubuntu VPS | DigitalOcean
- This guide combines Linux and web app skills to deploy your app to be publicly accessible on the internet. After this, you should have a working knowledge of how to build and deploy whatever the fuck you want, and you'll be ahead of most people in the country for getting internships.
- Building a resume will be easy once you have things to show for all of these tenets (2-4 specifically)
