Backstory: Born in 1999 in Cardiff, Katherine Kormac led a happy childhood. Her father, Dr. Adrian Kormac, was a palaeontologist, and she grew up enchanted by dinosaurs. Around her eleventh year, her love of dinosaurs started to grate on her mother, who was growing apart from her father and needed no reminders of his passion. When he was offered a prestigious job at a Utah university, that was all the excuse Katie's parents needed to break up for good. The shared custody agreement favoured her mother – her school and friends were in Wales, after all – but she was most excited when she got to spent the back half of each summer with her father.
In 2014, she was put on a flight to Utah by her mother, as usual, now trusted to make the direct journey to the other airport alone. Due to an unpredicted storm, the plane was forced to land two states over, in Kansas. A greyhound bus intended to take them the rest of the way broke down after only a few hours of travel. The replacement bus took her well past Denver along route 70, but having gotten off at a rest stop, Katie was taken up in helping an elderly woman who'd fallen and dropped the contents of her bag when the bus drove off without her. By this point her phone battery was dead, and like any 15 year old born after the mid-90s, it's not as if she knew her dad's number by heart. The old woman helped arrange her a ride across state lines, but the truck driver helping her couldn't diverge too far from his route. In a hurry, he left her behind at another rest stop and promised that he'd called in a friend to take her the rest of the way. The friend never showed, and ultimately Katie hitch-hiked the rest of the way, finally arriving to her worried-sick father. The immense relief she felt on arriving was matched by the sudden presence of something new in her spirit – the heart of a whole family of dinosaurs.
Once her powers began manifesting, her father restrained his excitement at the prospect. She was his little girl first and foremost, and any experimentation was to be done humanely and with her consent. A little study, however, showed that the powers she manifested seemed like they couldn't offer any special insight – but were very effective at providing illustration of current theories. Dr Kormac tried very hard to make sure his daughter didn't think of her powers as freakish or strange – they were a badge of honour for her resourcefulness and determination, they showed her dedication to knowledge and her connection to her planet and its history. So emboldened, Katie embraced her powers and continued into her late teens with the ambition of taking full advantage of them. She began working as a superhero, but also pledged to make herself available to the scientific community – the field of palaeontology in particular – to act as physical aid on expeditions, special protection at conferences and meetings, and even as a test subject or focus of study.
