- Lone Tressa Route Notes
- Last Updated: Aug. 18, 2022
- Contact: AnimeGamer#1297 on Discord if you'd like to reach me
- Status: Complete with extra backup money routed in - should be about 5k-10k over upon reaching Grandport for the final screen, but this can vary due to encounter/grind RNG.
- Sample Video: https://youtu.be/9tcoWMhTIV4 (This is a 1h39m43s solopath on PC without early Cait and using Thunder M to grind Whistlewood twice. The Esme fight went well but can still serve as a frame of reference overall.)
- This is a solo speedrun route for Tressa aiming to defeat Esme as fast as reasonably possible. Just a warning beforehand that I could not find a fast, efficient strategy to defeat Esme outside of just brute forcing her through levels and JP/passives, so a good chunk of this run is just optimized grinding. (I've tried a variety of jobs and strategies, involving Warrior, Apothecary, Cleric, Hunter, Thief, and a variety of skills like Thousand Spears/Spearhead, Empoison/poison in general, Aelfric's Auspices, Shackle Foe, Rain of Arrows, and several combinations of passives like Hang Tough, Hale and Hearty, Eye for an Eye, Saving Grace, Patience, and a bevy of other strategies with status weapons [such as blind weapons and items] and other niche equipment [defensive gear, elemental amulets, etc]. None of these were as consistent and fast as I'd've liked, though hopefully someone more capable can come up with a better route and fight one day.) The fight itself is still not free and has about a 20% win rate, likely requiring multiple attempts, thus the route is more focused on getting to Esme to do attempts than actual speed.
- Anyway, if none of this deters you or if you just want to run/read the route yourself, please continue.
- Note1: Prepare Buffer glitch beforehand if you need setup/practice.
- Note2: This assumes no Cait, but if you want to grind for a Cait in the beginning, you can skip Kit's Quest, the first sleeping pirate KO, the Thunder M, and Whistlewood. You can also skip some small money chests like the Wind Amulet and 1200 near Cobbleston. The route's money depends a lot on grind RNG, so there's a lot of backup money routed in just in case.
- Note3: This route has some excess money routed in because encounter RNG money can vary a lot, but you should overshoot the money by a small chunk and be safe money wise.
- Notation:
- TP = Teleport
- C = Chapter
- x2,x3,x4 = boost with 1 BP, 2 BP, or the max 3 BP respectively. x1 is not used but would be 0 BP and a normal move.
- S+Q = Save and Quit and reenter the game to reset/reload the encounter rate
- Reload/Reset = usually exit and reenter a screen to reset the encounter rate
- Buffer Glitch = use the Buffer Glitch to gain access to an item or area - see https://youtu.be/0XlAM3mTu0Q [NS/PC only, not XB]
- Settings/Technical Things (recommended, but you can play how you want):
- - Japanese Audio
- - Message Speed Quick
- - Revert to Original (Battle Cursor Position)
- - Preload Before a Run (Start a new game with any character and exit to the menu, since the first load is slowest)
- - Note that loading games directly from console is usually faster than loading from an SD/memory card
- - Always Hold B to Skip Cutscenes, unless the textbox/scene is so short that it's faster to mash (Ex: usually 1-2 textbox scenes)
- ########################
- ########################
- Buy Wolf's Bow and do C1 as normal
- Optionally get grape chest when you spawn in front of tavern (to your immediate right)
- In C1 dungeon, first sleeping pirate enemy: Defend->Bow->Tradewinds x4
- Mikk and Makk
- T1-3: Tradewinds Mikk (right guy until broken)
- T4: Tradewinds x4 Mikk to KO him
- (You can swap the following turns to Grape sooner/later as needed.)
- T5: Tradewinds
- T6: Grape
- T7: Tradewinds x4
- (If needed, you can Grape again if HP is low, and then adjust turn actions/skip the Defend on T9 to just Bow.)
- T8: Bow
- T9: Defend
- T10: Bow
- T11: Tradewinds x4
- Finish C1 and do Kit's quest
- TP Rippletide and buy Thunder M + S from Tony's Mother.
- Optionally buy 1-4 Stone S from Exotic Grandma NPC a bit below her to the left on the dock
- Go toward Scholar Shrine/Whistlewood area. Note you need 130 JP when entering the Scholar Shrine.
- Optionally grind decent encounters on the way for EM JP to alleviate the WW grind a bit (avoid birdkin I but anything that gives 4 jp or more can be reasonable if it's on the way). Break and Tradewinds usually works. See below sections for grinding tips and uses of Stones/JP and such.
- Thunder S stone uses (your choice):
- - Bow->Thunder S-> Bow KOs the 2 Flying Fish
- - Spear->Thunder S->Tradewinds KOs the 2 Aggressive Ants
- - Thunder S breaks Howlers in Whistlewood so that Ice M defeats it. (Keep in mind Thunder M just outright beats Howlers, so this only occurs if you get Howlers twice. The first time, chuck Thunder M to KO, then the second chuck Thunder S-> Ice M)
- - anything else you want to use it on. Ex Bow x2 to break Frog/Meep and then KO with Thunder S (note, this is pretty inefficient though and gives much less JP relative to the other uses)
- Other Stone S uses if you opted for them (your choice):
- - Bow->Stone S-> Tradewinds x2 KOs the 2 Flying Fish (x2may not be needed, but I haven't tested TBH)
- - Spear->Stone S->Tradewinds x4 KOs the 2 Aggressive Ants (x4 may not be needed, but I haven't tested TBH)
- - 2 shield enemies, Bow/Spear x2 to break then chuck Stone S
- - anything else like double frogs or whatever you prefer
- Optional - Spend 30 JP for Hired Help early, but it sets you back 30 JP for the 130 JP you need for EM. A single set of ants/fish will be enough to get 30 JP after C1, but you can also opt to keep the JP for EM's 130 needed. Uses of Hired Help listed:
- - HH Bandits x1/x2 on encounters or caits for extra JP (800 leaves per encounter)
- - HH Dancers -> Bow -> Bow x2 on Scholar shrine battle (2500 leaves)
- - Defend/caught by surprise -> HH Dancers x3 in Whistlewood to KO some frog/weak groups (2500 leaves)
- Note: If you don't get Hired Help or can't afford the Scholar shrine battle Dancers, you have to either defeat the Scholar Shrine encounter (see M Stone usages below) or you have to get a yolo Flee or just skip the battle by walking and getting lucky (6% or 14% chance IIRC)
- M Stone Uses:
- - grind 1-2 battles in Whistlewood. (Get 1500 if so.) Ice M on Frogs, Thunder M on Owls, or Thunder S->Ice M on Owls. If you opt for 2 battles, I recommend exiting and reentering for an auto-save.
- - KO Scholar Shrine battle with 1 M Stone. You need to break the ram before throwing the stone, so do Defend->Bow x3->M Stone. Note it gives 36 JP, so you should have 94 JP before entering the Noblecourt flats map.
- If you get a Cait:
- - any M Stone defeats it, and you can learn Hired Help, and then go to Scholar shrine, breaking with Dancers, as listed above. Caits give 6k, so you can definitely afford the Scholar battle.
- - if you get a second or more Caits, HHB x2 will KO it if at least one Bandits hits, which is very favorable.
- Other general grinding (in general, I'd say Fish/Ants/1 shield frogs are fine to take, but most others are a bit slow, and ideally, WW is good enough you don't need to bother):
- - ants, do Spear -> Tradewinds x3 -> Defend -> Spear -> Tradewinds x3
- - frogs/meep, do Bow x1 until broken then Tradewinds x3 or whatever boost
- - fish, do Bow -> Tradewinds x3 -> Defend -> Bow -> Tradewinds x3
- - birdkin I/hermit conch, may opt to Spear/Spear x2 and Flee
- - birdkin II, Spear->Spear->Tradewinds x3
- Whistlewood:
- - I prefer taking just any encounter and then adapting from there, based on my JP. See the M stone uses section above.
- - if you opt for Hired Help, there's some potential uses in here too, see HH section above too.
- - you can opt to take 1-2 WW's, but if you take 1, usually, taking the Scholar battle is recommended. If you opt to take 2, you'll need a way past Scholar shrine, so see below.
- - if you opt to take 2, I also recommend exiting and reentering for an Auto-Save
- Note: Don't do anymore grinding than you need to, unless it's a Cait.
- Getting to Scholar Shrine options:
- - walk all the way to try to skip the encounter
- - KO encounter (gives 36 JP, so you need 94 JP before entering the map), see M Stone uses section above
- - yolo Flee
- - if you opted to learn Hired Help and have 2500 leaves to spare, see the optional Hired Help section above for breaking and fleeing

- Evasive Maneuvers OFF
- Heighten Senses + Endless Items ON, job Scholar if not already
- Alluring Ribbon + Elemental Augmentor on over Empowering Bracelet
- Use all Nuts + Heal HP
- If doing Cait route, you should already be at least level 15 now from the Cait and random encounters.
- If non-Cait, you still won't be far off from that after a few battles but can use Stones more in the beginning battles.
- Note the below advice is given based on a previous route that didn't get Magic nuts, so Tressa may be able to nuke encounters at a lower level now and not need as many Defends for BP and such.
- For each battle (LB = Lightning Blast. Watch the damage and can swap for Fireball on Sent battles once its two ~1900 ish hits):
- 2 Light Sent + 2 Light Guards at level 15+: Defend -> HH Mercs x2 -> LB x2
- (HH Mercs x2 -> M Stone or just L Stone is faster until you run out of stones)
- 5 Light Sent at level 15+: HH Mercs -> LB x2 (can Fireball x3 at 28+)
- 2 Wind Sent + 2 Wind Guard at level 15+: Defend -> LB x3
- at level 27+: LB x2
- 5 Wind Sent at level 15+: LB x2 (should KO but worst case, it still breaks and you can finish with Fireball next turn)
- Thief I (3 shield): early on at level 16: Defend -> LB x3
- Level 17: LB x2 (range to KO, Fireball to finish)
- Level 18+: LB x2 always
- Thief II (4 shield) at level 15+: LB x2
- Light Remnant + 2 Light Guards
- level 15+: HH Merc x2 -> L Stone if you have one,
- otherwise: HH Merc -> Defend -> HH Merc -> LB x4
- Wind Remnant + 2 Wind Guards
- level 15+: LB -> LB x3
- Any Caits: L Stone or LB x2 right away
- Heal to 1000 HP/44 SP as needed if no level up (highest damage is caught by surprise from 10 sentinels in a row for ~1000 total damage)
- Get 4 items at any time since it's a long grind: Fire L + 9400 + Bright Stone + Curious Antique
- Grind near entrance until 9330 JP; run in a line left and right on the bottom floor to get encounters (I have heard from runners who said running in circles generates less encounters)
- We want:
- - 4630 for Patience (have 130 used already)
- - 4630 for Saving Grace
- - 630 for Eye for an Eye
- - 130 for Evasive Maneuvers (have 130 used already)
- - 130 for Endless Items (have 130 used already)
- - 130 for Thousand Spears and Spearhead
- Total needed: 4630 + 4630 + 630 + 130 + 130 + 30 = 10,280 JP
- Total used already: 130 + 130 + 130 = 390 JP
- Total will get from C2+C3 bosses: 60 + 500 = 560
- (Omar's battle always gives 60 JP; Venomtooth Tiger's battle always gives 500 JP)
- Total needed - (used+will get) = 10,280 - (390+560) = 9330 we leave here with.
- Once you get 9330 JP, menu:
- Equip Empowering Necklace + Antidote Stone
- Jobs:
- Job Hunter + learn all except divine to get Patience
- Job Cleric + learn all EXCEPT Revive to get Evil Ward
- Job Dancer + learn 3 skills to get Eye for an Eye
- Job Warrior + Thousand Spears + Spearhead
- Should have > 2440 JP now (will have +560 from C2/C3 so total of 3k after C3 to get Saving Grace)
- Passives:
- - Endless Items off
- - Put on Evasive Manuevers / Evil Ward / Patience (and keep Heighten Senses on)
- Exit and go to Everhold area
- Get Silver-Filled Pouch, optionally Save
- Enter Everhold Tunnels (very low [like 15%] encounter chance, can move straight down entering Everhold area screen to go to pouch)
- Get Pom L
- Boss reset + get 35k
- Boss reset again + get Death Cleaver
- TP Quarrycrest
- Go up, cutscene
- Go down, cutscene and go in Morlock's Manse to boss
- If encounter outside, Flee
- Reload save inside once you go through top right door
- Heal HP + SP before Omar
- Omar (if you ever get a Patience turn, always use it to Defend, unless you want to adapt and try to capitalize, but it's hard to route those effectively)
- T1: Pom M
- T2: Spear x4 Omar (WATCH CURSOR)
- T3: Spearhead Omar (or Spear x1 if already first)
- T4: Vets x3
- T5: Thousand Spears
- T6: if 4 shields, Spearhead, else Defend
- T7: Thousand Spears
- T8: Vets x4 (should win with at least 500-800+ HP or so)
- After cutscenes, TP's Hollow and start Tressa 3
- Go to Tavern, cutscene
- Go north to buy Edbart's Shield for 8k
- Go back south to talk to Merchant
- Go to Tavern, skip bunch of cutscenes
- Go to Path of Forgotten Grotto and go up left, enter Forgotten Grotto
- Go in leftward, down, left, down, right a little, then down and left to a save point
- Save on left of Save Point
- Go left down a while, following torches
- Get 15k chest around the hidden bend
- Reach Save Point
- Menu:
- - Eye for an Eye over Evil Ward
- Heal HP + SP
- Save
- Venomtooth Tiger
- The goal is to break 3 times and do Vets x4 each of those breaks. Thousand Spears/normal spear/Spearhead is used to break, and you should adapt your turns based on the shields left. Don't break if you won't have the BP to do Vets x4.
- It's highest hit is about 1585 so Grape M and delay a turn if needed.
- Example script (Sidestep/Grape M can be used on Patience triggers as needed, dont bother boosting it):
- T1: Thousand Spears
- T2: Thousand Spears
- T3: Vets x4
- T4: Thousand Spears
- T5: if 3 or less shields, Defend/Sidestep/Grape M, otherwise Spear/Thousand Spears
- T6: Thousand Spears
- T7: Vets x4
- T8: Thousand Spears
- T9: Thousand Spears/Grape M
- T10: Vets x4
- Use Spearhead if needed for turn order and if you want, you can opt for Collect if turn order permits.
- After cutscenes, enter tavern to finish C3 cutscenes
- TP Grandport and do C4 start
- Menu:
- - Unequip Rune Glaive
- - Equip Empowering Bracelet over Antidote Stone
- Go to weapon shop and sell pretty much all the worthwhile equips/Olive L:
- -1 Old Coin
- -2 Fool's Gold Ore
- -2 Silver Filled Pouch
- -2 Curious Antique
- -1 Dazzling Artwork
- -1 Master's Spear
- -1 Rune Glaive
- -1 Omar's Axe
- -1 Death Cleaver
- -1 Elemental Augmentor
- -1 Alluring Ribbon
- -1 Antidote Stone
- -1 Bright Stone
- -1 Wind Amulet
- -2 Olive of Life L
- (You can stop selling if you hit 180k, as you'll likely be over by a decent bit)
- need 178k minimum since Eye for Money gives at least 2k in C4 dungeon (got 2400 ish in tests)
- If short, unequip + sell Wolf's Bow and/or run around extra when getting Force Shield for extra Eye for Money but my tests were 5k+ over. If you run around for a few seconds before doing a screen transition in the final dungeon, it should help generate enough money.
- After selling, continue C4 and go into Sewers dungeon
- Get Force Shield in bottom left map
- Menu:
- - Equip Force Shield
- - Job Cleric + learn Revive
- - Job Warrior
- - Heal HP
- Get Wind L when you go back to the previous map
- (It is a backup that can help on some empty turns or to break Esme if attack locked)
- Continue to top left, go through map and reach Save Point
- Menu:
- - Put Saving Grace+Endless Items on over Evasive Manuevers/Heighten Senses
- (thus, you should have Patience, Eye for an Eye, Saving Grace, and Endless Items)
- Save.
- (Note: You should be entering Esme with at least 180k, 3-4 Pom L, 6 Rev Jam, 1 Wind L and very likely level 33-34 though 32 is fine)
- (My test stats for reference after the Force Shield: 4,399 HP, 509 Def, 488 EDef at level 33)
- Esmeralda (96,450 HP)
- Shields: 4 -> 6 -> 8 and stays at 8 for every break after
- (That is, it starts at 4 shields, gets 6 after its first unbreak, and then for every break after has 8 shields.)
- Weakness Set 1 (WS1): Spear Axe Staff Wind Light
- Weakness Set 2 (WS2): Sword Bow Fire Thunder Wind
- Weakness Set 3 (WS3): Spear Dagger Ice Wind Shadow
- Most important notes of the shields and weaknesses: She is weak to Spear in her first and third sets and Sword/Bow in her second set. She is always weak to Wind as well. Keep in mind Tressa has better coverage due to Hired Help Mercs/Dancers if needed, with the former canceling Raven's Flight if desired as well and latter used in her WS3 if you have excess money and want to hope for helpful poison/blind.
- The overall goal is to set up Sidesteps + Overheal with Saving Grace while breaking with Eye for an Eye/Thousand Spears and do Vets x4/x3 a total of 6 times on her breaks (usually 4 or 5 Vets x4 and 1 or 2 Vets x3 depending on ranges and whether you use the Wind L), which should defeat her, but it isn't realistic to make an actual script for this battle, and a lot of it requires adaptation based on Patience/her attacks and will likely take a few resets (about 20% win rate in tests). She returns from break with Five Strikes which will KO you if you aren't overhealed past 6500 ish HP or have sidesteps set up (1350 ish per hit).
- Broken damage numbers:
- Vets x4 do ~4150 x 4 (~16600)
- Vets x3 do ~4900 x 3 (~14700)
- Wind L does 3509 on a shield or 5400 broken
- Esme has 96,450 HP
- So as an example, four Vets x4 and two Vets x3 is (4 x 16600) + (2 x 14700) = 95800 ish depending on ranges and will possibly need your Wind L as well.
- T1: Rev Jam
- T2: Sidestep x4
- This is how most fights should start. If you get Patience, try to setup extra Sidesteps (if you ever get a turn where you boosted and then get a Patience turn, it is efficient to use that Patience turn to boost again).
- From T3 onward, use Rev Jam/Pom L/Sidesteps x4 and x3 being prioritized to use up BP/Thousand Spears/Spearhead to keep overhealing and setting up extra Sidesteps. If you're under Raven's Flight with reduced defenses, prioritize Sidesteps or breaking.
- After the first break, tab to bow.
- If you have Sidesteps set up and are overhealed, use Vets x4 (and Vets x3 if you get a Patience proc).
- REMINDER: TAB TO BOW AFTER FIRST BREAK - this is extremely important as her second shield set is not weak to spear for Eye for an Eye.
- During the second set, if you have turns where you need to reduce her shield count to approach break (Thousand Spears doesn't work), use HH Mercs if you had well over 180k going into this fight, otherwise just use Bow.
- However, prioritize Sidesteps over breaking or damaging her, unless your Black Blade Counter is getting low (Black Blade is an Instant KO if the number hits 0 and is removed on break). Also, remember to keep using Rev Jams as needed, though Pom L's if they alone would suffice.
- Continue using Bow/HH Mercs as needed. If she's down to 1 shield, you can also HH Vets x4 into the break, which breaks and gives and extra turn of damage/Sidestep setup
- After her second break, tab to spear.
- Then use Vets x4/Sidestep x4 or whatever variation of those you can afford based on health and damage. (See section below of numbers.)
- After she returns from break, Eye for an Eye may help reduce her shield count, and then Thousand Spears can bring it down further.
- REMINDER: TAB TO SPEAR AFTER SECOND BREAK AND STAY ON SPEAR AFTER - this is critically important, as your previous Bow will no longer hit her.
- (To not forget, I like to keep tapping right on empty time between turns until first break, then keep tapping left until second break.)
- Continue this pattern until she is at 89%+ Collect, which is enough for Vets x3 or x4 to KO.
- Sidestep/Pom L/Rev Jam on dead or Patience turns as needed.
- Other notes/advice:
- - EDIT: Apparently Spearhead can miss, so possibly try not using it so much.
- - Defend smartly (i.e. if you go last in the turn order and she has one shield, it's better to defend before breaking to get the 1 extra BP. Or if you're one Thousand Spears away from breaking but go last, you can Defend or Spearhead before breaking her to get the 1 extra BP) to move up in turn order or use Spearhead to do it while also gaining a spear hit on Esme.
- - if you boost and get Patience that turn, its efficient to boost again on that Patience turn since you don't gain BP either way
- - Use LOTs of Sidestep x4 and x3 (esp if you boosted in a turn and get Patience), esp when under Raven's Flight or if she'll be broken soon from Eye for an Eye (because Five Strikes always comes after a break). Try to have Sidesteps up going into break if possible, and breaking with Wind L is efficient too.
- - If you get Patience turns or are about to Sidestep, keep in mind that you want to manipulate your Sidesteps so that from Five Strikes, she can do enough to bring you below full health so you can Rev Jam to a higher max HP. If you cannot do that, then set up extra Sidesteps instead. Ex if your hp is only overhealed to 4800, you want her to do a light tap or a single Five Strikes hit so you can overheal higher, so try to maintain 4 Sidesteps going into break or when she's leaving break.
- - If Raven's flight'd, focus more on Sidesteps or break if it'll help use up the turns before she returns. Raven Flight Five Strikes does 2kx5 or 10k approximately if they all hit Tressa, which KOs her even at double max HP.
- - Be efficient with BP but Rev Jam if possible, but use them as needed too as they're your only healing.
- - Each vets x4 does about 17% of her Collect hover, and she's KOed at 105% Collect, so from 88% Collect ish, a vets x4 should win. From 89% Collect, a vets x3 might also defeat her as it does about 15-16% Collect but is possibly a range.
- - Vets x3 can be used on some of the breaks and doesn't do much less while letting you keep extra BP for Sidesteps. Use this to balance the battle, but depending on how many you use or on ranges, you may need to throw the Wind L too.
- - 1330 per 5 Strike so 6650 total damage - be wary of this! It's more than your normal max HP.
- - (Plus crit is 1600 ish for a 5 Strike hit.)
- - The above two points is why it's important to have Overheal and/or Sidesteps setup. It isn't unreasonable to setup 5-7 before breaks.
- - Thousand Spears is a guaranteed 3 hit minimum, but you can also just do normal boosted Spear/Bow/HH Mercs attacks depending on her shield.
- - If under ravens flight, each Five Strikes hit is 2k each.
- - HH Merc can cancel Raven's Flight but is inefficient if she is not on the second shield set (Bow/Sword shields set).
- - Watch black blade counter and break before it gets to 0 which is instant KO (even Villifying Stone doesn't counter).
- - Get Patience, overheal, setup sidesteps to eat up Five Strikes damage, overheal to survive.
- - Need 5 broken sets of Vets x4 and 1 set of Vets x3, but if you toss the Wind L (ideally when she's at 1 shield as it breaks her and does good damage), you can do another Vets x3. You can also hit through her second shield set for damage and can even Collect her for extra money on another Vets, but this is very difficult to manage. (Just check her Collect value before committing to a final burst - as stated above, at 88% Collect ish, a Vets x4 should win. From 89% Collect ish, a vets x3 may also defeat her depending on the range).
- - If possible, having her go first to hit you into Eye for an Eye and breaking her is nice as it'll give you two broken turns to unleash on her or setup/prep, but this is obviously RNG. A similar effect can be achieved if Patience triggers during her broken state, so you get 2 turns on her broken.
- - If turn/attack locked or you feel short on damage due to having more Vets x3, you can try to use the Wind L to cover some damage ranges while hitting a shield, as all her shield sets are weak to it.
- - REMINDER TO TAB TO BOW AFTER FIRST BREAK, THEN TAB TO SPEAR AFTER SECOND BREAK - critically important but also very easy to forget.
- After defeating her, complete C4. Time is when the last cutscene bar fills up and goes to ending credits. GG.
