  1. FIREWALLS
  2. ==========
  3. It is an extra security layer, which helps me securing our web application and web site,computers and networks. It acts as a middle layer between the data transmission of user and the server.
  4.
  5. Firewall act as the filter. It filters the unwanted packets and malicious packets. Firewall works on the basis of signature and permutation and combination of queries which are transmitted by the user.
  6.
  7. Knowledgebase : it acts like a database of the signatures and combinations for the firewall.
  8.
  9. TYPES OF FIREWALLS
  10. ===================
  11. 1. Softwares Based Firewalls :
  12.
  13. These are the firewall which run over a system software which consist a rulesets of Inbound and Outbound Traffic coming from a Network.
  14.
  15. Eg. Windows Firewalls , LInux Firewalls - IP Tables.
  16.
  17. 2. Hardware Based Firewalls :
  18.
  19. A hardware based firewall is a peripheral which is having a system box with a processor and giving us a Configuration Panel and having more advanced features from a Software Based Firewalls.
  20.
  21. Eg. Juniper, Sophos, Endian etc.
  22.
  23.
  24. IDS
  25. ===
  26. IDS stands Intrusion DEtection System, it is a software or a hardware based program which detects every suspicious activity and create a log for it. It can also create the logs and send immediately to the Network Administrator so that they can find out that there is a Intruder in our network.
  27.
  28. It can be determined in different types such as NIDS (Network IDS), HIDS (Host IDS), WIDS(Wireless IDS) etc
  29.
  30. IPS
  31. ===
  32. IPS stands for Intrusion Prevention System, An IPS is different from IDS as they prevents and blocks the user/source IP Address who is sending and generating the malicious traffic in a particular network. A IPS follows immediate action on the basis of rulesets for eg. blocking a IP Address of a source creating a Reverse Connection.
  33.
  34. EG. of IDS and IPS - SNORT etc.
  35.
  36.
  37. WAF --> Web Application Firewall :
  38.
  39. A web application firewall (or WAF) filters, monitors, and blocks HTTP traffic to and from a web application.
  40.
  41. MOD Security : ModSecurity, sometimes called Modsec, is a popular Open-source Web application firewall (WAF).
  42.
  43. cd /etc/apache2/sites-available
  44. ls ---> 000-default.conf
  45. sudo nano 000-default.conf
  46. edit
  47. ProxyPass --> Web application IP
  48. ProxyPassReverse --> Web application IP
  49. save and exit
  50. sudo service apache2 restart
