IMS Hephaestus

The Hephaestus class is one of humanity's great engineering marvels. This project was conceived after a series of breakthroughs made large-scale automated von-Neumann style construction methods viable. Several Nickel-Iron asteroids were taken from the belt, then seeded with the initial constructor units. After a few months, the first Hephaestus came online, a massive conglomeration of cargo holds, machine shops, and ressource extractors.
These vessels, intended as a testbed design for the Very Large Self Sufficient Ship concept favoured by some GEF cells, provide the Kuiper belt colonies with much needed highly mobile and flexible manufacturing capability. With them, the GEF has been able to sever almost all economic ties with the inner solar system, except for certain raw elements.
