“I can kill anyone just by thinking it. So please go.”

The boy spoke like a patient teacher might to a slow student. There was resignation there, as if he knew that his opponents wouldn’t be able to wrap their minds around what he was saying.

But Jolt understood the words. Robert had been killed by this boy. He just didn’t know how it was possible. Robert’s uniform was part of the invincible armor that Darian had developed. It was a miracle. Previously, Darian had neutralized Jolt's magic, and the effect had been attached to the uniform despite it being ordinary cloth so that anyone could use it. It could analyze and neutralize any magic, and completely nullify every possible abnormal state, attack attribute, and physical attack. It interfered with the system that ruled this world. That was why they were invincible.

Even though Darian had made the uniforms on a whim, until now, no one had ever been able to penetrate their defenses. For someone bound by the system, it defied belief. Power in this world meant the Gift, which was nothing more than a phenomenon processed by the system. So no skills produced by the Gift could ever break through their armor.

“How dare you! What do you think you know about our Invincible Battalion?!” Jolt blurted out. He wanted to continue, to say, “We are invincible, and there is no way you can overcome the armor that Darian made for us!”

“Fine! There is no need for Lord Darian to dirty his own hands!” the Witch of the Frozen Flame, Elayna, suddenly shouted. “My magic will—”

Jolt tried to stop her. She had no concept of restraint. If she used her power, the entire area would be consumed in a gale of absolute zero winds. Though Jolt and his companions would be fine thanks to their armor, the half-demons they had come to retrieve would be slaughtered.

But his fears were for nothing. Elayna’s voice had cut off in the middle of her speech as she too fell from her horse.

Jolt could tell that the two of them were dead. He could see their deceased status through the system as well, as could every other member of his troop.

“It should be obvious, but if you attack me, I’ll fight back. Oh, and I won’t attack anyone who tries to escape, so feel free to run away.”

The boy must have been referring to killing Elayna. But he couldn’t have done anything that time. He hadn’t even told her to die, like he had done with Robert.

“That’s insane,” Bernard muttered. “It’s impossible!” A moment after drawing his sword in rage, he immediately fell to the ground.

Three dead now. There was no more room for doubt. The boy was telling the truth. He could kill anyone by thinking it and could counter anyone who tried to attack him.

“Resurrection!” Saria used her magic on the three people who had fallen from their horses. Her resurrection magic was exceptional. She had once revived a dozen or so people who were dismembered to the point it was unknown who was who, and was therefore called the Witch of Blasphemy for the way she play with people's lives.

However, her magic was ineffective. There was no apparent reason for the others to have died. Even after falling off their horses, there were no apparent signs of injury on them. Yet they were dead. Motionless.

“What’s going on?! Multiple Resurrection!” Saria chanted a spell aimed at the boy. It was taboo to use resurrection magic on a living person. It would superimpose the body and soul, an unorthodox act that would transform a person into a state that was pitiful to look at.

But the result was the same. Saria fell from her horse and didn’t move again.

「俺 は 任意 の 相手 を 殺す こと が できる ん だ。 だから 立ち去っ て くれ」 　 少年 が、 嚙 んで 含める よう に 言う。 　 そこ に ある のは 諦め だ。 　 どうせ あんた ら には 理解 でき ない ん だろ う、 とでも 言い たげ だっ た。 　 言葉 の 意味 は わかる。 　 なら ば、 ロバート は この 少年 に 殺さ れ た の だ。 　 だが、 わけ が わから ない。 　 ロバート の 軍服 には、 ダリ アン が 開発 し た 無敵 装甲 が 施さ れ て いる。 　 これ は 奇跡 の ごとき 代物 だ。 以前、 ダリ アン は ジョルト の 魔法 を 無効 化 し た こと が あっ た が、 それ を 誰 にでも 扱える よう に、 ただ の 布き れ でしか ない 軍服 に 効果 を 付与 し た の だ。 　 それ は どんな 魔法 も 解析 し て 無力 化 し、 ありとあらゆる 状態 異常、 属性 攻撃、 物理 攻撃 まで 完全 に 無効 化 する。それ は、 この 世界 を 支配 する システム に 干渉 し て い た。 　 だからこそ の 無敵 なの だ。 　 ダリ アン が 気まぐれ で 作っ た よう な 代物 では ある が、 それでも 今 までに この 装甲 を 破っ た 者 は い ない。 　 システム に 囚われ て いる 者 にとって、 この 装甲 は 想像 の 埒外 の 存在 だ。 　 この 世界 では 力 とは ギフト の こと で あり、 ギフト は システム が 処理 する 現象 に すぎ ない。 　 なら ば ギフト で 無敵 装甲 を 破る こと など、 絶対 に でき ない の だ。 「貴様！ 　 我ら 無敵 軍団 を なんと 心得る！」 　 だから、 ジョルト は そんな こと を 口走っ て い た。 　 我々 は 無敵 なの だ と、 装甲 が 破ら れる はず が ない の だ という 思い が、 そう 言わ せ た の だ。 「いい わ！ 　 こんな 奴、 ダリ アン 様 の 手 を 煩わせる までも ない！ 　 私 の 魔法 で ─ ─」 　 氷 炎 の 魔女、 イレーネ が 叫ぶ。 　 ジョルト は 止めよ う と し た。 この 女 は 手加減 という もの を 知ら ない。 　 その 力 を 解放 すれ ば、 周囲 一帯 に 絶対零度 の 暴風 が 吹き荒れる こと だろ う。 　 ジョルト たち は 無敵 装甲 の おかげ で 無傷 かも しれ ない が、 それでは 回収 す べき 半 魔 たち が 根こそぎ 死ん で しまう。 　 だが、 その 心配 も 杞憂 に 終わっ た。イレーネ も また 言葉 を 途 切ら せ て、 落馬 し た から だ。 　 二人 が 死ん だ こと を、 ジョルト は 認識 し て い た。 　 システム を 介し て 見れ ば、 彼ら の ステータス が 死亡 に なっ て いる こと が わかっ た から だ。 　 それ は、 この 場 に いる 仲間 たち 全員 が 認識 し た こと だろ う。 「当たり前 だ けど、 攻撃 し て き たら 反撃 する からな。 それ と、 逃げる 人 は 攻撃 し ない から、 安心 し て 逃げ て」 　 少年 は、 イレーネ を 殺し た こと について 言っ て いる の だろ う。 　 だが、 少年 は 何 を し た とも 思え なかっ た。 　 先 ほどの よう に、 死ね と すら 言っ て い ない の だ。 「馬鹿 な……」 　 バナード が つぶやく。 「こんな こと が あっ て たまる か！」 　 激昂 し て 抜刀 し、 またもや 落馬 する。 　 三人 目。 　 もはや 疑い よう も ない。 　 この 少年 の 言葉 は 事実 なの だ。 任意 の 対象 を 殺す こと が でき、 殺そ う と し た だけで 反撃 さ れる。 「蘇生！」サリア が 落馬 し た 三人 を 対象 に 魔法 を 使う。 　 彼女 の 蘇生 魔法 は 破格 だ。 　 誰 が 誰 なのか わから ない ほど バラバラ に なっ た 十数 人 を 一度 に 蘇生 し た こと すら あり、 それ が 故に 命 を 弄ぶ 者、 冒瀆 の 魔女 と すら 呼ば れ て いる。 　 だが、 その 魔法 は 効果 を 発揮 し なかっ た。 　 そもそも、 何 が 原因 で 死ん だ の かも わかっ ては い なかっ た。 　 見 た ところ、 落馬 し た 三人 に 外傷 は ない。 なのに 死ん で いる。 動か なく なっ て いる。 「何 が どう なっ てる って のよ！ 　 多重 蘇生！」 　 サリア が、 少年 に 向け て 魔法 を 唱え た。 　 それ は、 生き て いる 人間 に 蘇生 魔法 を 行使 する 禁忌。 魂 と 身体 を 重ね合わ せ、 見る も 無惨 な あり さま へと 変える 外法 だ。 　 だが、 結果 は 同じ だっ た。 　 サリア も また、 力 なく 落馬 し、 動か なく なっ た の だ。
