  1. Karunanidhi's Relationship with the Nehru Family !
  2.
  3. The Tamil Nadu CM Karunanidhi has uttered recently that no one can
  4. break his relationship with the Nehru Family. Of course, Not! Isn't
  5. this the relationship that originated with showing Pandit Nehru the
  6. black flag and throwing chappals at him in Madurai ?
  7. How can such a relationship be broken ?
  8.
  9. These people threw chappals at Pandit Nehru. But Panditji listened to
  10. Annadurai's speech in the Rajya Sabha and asked the Speaker to allocate
  11. more time to the latter. That is the difference in culture between
  12. Karunanidhi and Panditji !
  13.
  14. In 1971, after the abolition of the Privy Purse and Nationalisation of
  15. Banks, Karunanidhi sensed the people's overwhelming support for
  16. Indiraji and the Congress. He dissolved the TN Assembly in 1971
  17. (Elections were due in 1972) and DMK won the election and retained power.
  18. What about this relationship then ?
  19.
  20. In the DMK Conference at Coimbatore, a DMK Minister himself said :
  21. "CM has announced the Pension for Widows scheme. If Indiraji asks,
  22. Kalaignar shall give", thus revealing the speciality of the relationship.
  23.
  24. No one can forget the cruelty and savagery of the attack on Indiraji's
  25. life when she came to Madurai after her defeat in the polls post-emergency.
  26. Pazha. Nedumaran, who saved her life, and N.S.V. Chitthan and some good
  27. old Congressmen bear witness to this barbaric act.
  28.
  29. Blood stains on the white saree of the sixty-plus motherly figure of
  30. Indiraji ! Self-respecting Congressmen and the Tamils of noble cultural
  31. heritage will never forget the perverted public statements made by
  32. Karunanidhi's partymen. In one political dais after another, these men
  33. loud-mouthed that it was the menstrual blood of Indiraji ! See how the
  34. DMK held aloft the Nehru family relationship !
  35.
  36. A few years later, because of the then PM Morarji Desai, Karunanidhi
  37. had the opportunity to renew his ties with the Nehru family. MGR, who had
  38. initially agreed to Indiraji contesting from Tanjore (in the 1980
  39. Lok Sabha Elections), backtracked at the last minute by saying that he
  40. feared for her life. Singaravadivel was the candidate for the Congress in
  41. her place. Karunanidhi utilised this opportunity.
  42.
  43. He welcomed Indiraji with the slogan "Welcome, Daughter of Nehruji!
  44. Provide a stable rule!" and Sanjay Gandhi with the slogan
  45. "Grandson of Nehruji! Brave son of Indiraji!" MGR's AIADMK was routed,
  46. obtaining just 2 seats.
  47.
  48. The Congress Government at the Centre did what the Janata Government had
  49. done previously - it dismissed eight Janata party-led State Governments.
  50. Karunanidhi forced Indiraji to dismiss the MGR Government in Tamil Nadu.
  51. But the people of Tamil Nadu re-elected MGR.
  52.
  53. In the by-election for the Tiruppattur assembly constituency (because of
  54. the Congress incumbent Valmiki's demise), eventhough the DMK was in an
  55. alliance with the Congress, MGR voluntarily supported the Congress in
  56. various public meetings and renewed ties with the Congress.
  57.
  58. Later, Indiraji was brutally assassinated by her guards. Leaders like
  59. Vajpayee and Advani, who were strong opponents of Indiraji, paid their
  60. last respects to her. Karunanidhi, on the other hand, did not pay homage
  61. to her; he did not even pay his respects to her ashes that were brought
  62. to Chennai. This is how he honoured his relationship with the Nehru family.
  63.
  64. To add insult to injury, Karunanidhi described Indiraji's gory murder as
  65. just another ordinary death. He had lost the assembly elections in 1984
  66. held after her death. He mocked at the verdict stating that the people
  67. had voted for death. He justified his loss by stating that the victory for
  68. the AIADMK-Congress combine was a victory for MGR's illness and Indiraji's
  69. death. Yet another instance of his honouring the Nehru family relationship !
  70.
  71. This is the Karunanidhi who created ruckus by placing cardboard cannons
  72. throughout Tamil Nadu when V.P. Singh raised the Bofors bogey with an
  73. eye on the Prime Minister's post - the same V.P. Singh who had benefited
  74. largely from his staunch association with Indiraji and Rajivji.
  75. The Tamil Nadu Congressmen may have forgotten this; but not the people.
  76.
  77. In a public meeting in Patna that he addressed along with V.P. Singh
  78. and many other North Indian leaders, Karunanidhi derided Rajivji by
  79. saying : "I am not someone who has married a foreigner".
  80. The "foreigner" he referred to is the same person he is now addressing
  81. as "Annai Sonia" (Mother Sonia). Would someone occupying plum posts in
  82. Tamil Nadu Congress please tell Soniaji about this ? Aren't they all
  83. in "Karunanidhi Congress" now ? How can we expect them to possess the
  84. guts to speak the truth when they are all grovelling in front of
  85. Karunanidhi ?
  86.
  87. MDMK's Vai. Ko. was also present in this meeting. On that day, the learned
  88. ones understood that neither V.P. Singh nor Vai. Ko. know history. The Patna
  89. of modern India was the Pataliputra of ancient times - the capital city of the
  90. great king Chandragupta Maurya - the one who had married the sister of the
  91. Greek General Seleucus Nicator. It is in this Patna that Karunanidhi talks of
  92. himself not marrying a foreigner ! One can understand his lack of knowledge of
  93. history. What about the others ? So much for his relationship with the Nehru
  94. family !
  95.
  96. One could very well gauge Karunanidhi's affection towards the Nehru family
  97. when he brought V.P. Singh to Tamil Nadu, glorified him as the custodian of
  98. social justice and hurled brickbats at Rajivji simultaneously.
  99.
  100. During the 1991 Lok Sabha Elections, Rajivji was assassinated in Tamil Nadu.
  101. Did Karunanidhi pay homage to him at that time ? Did he even pay his respects
  102. when the ashes came to Tamil Nadu ? Such is the greatness of Karunanidhi's
  103. relationship with the Nehru family ! Is Soniaji aware of these ?
  104.
  105. It is laughable that the DMK, which, on numerous occasions, indulged in cheap
  106. and vulgar talk - amorously linking Nehruji with Lady Mountbatten and
  107. "the Queen of Music" - M.S. Subbulakshmi, should be talking highly of its
  108. relationship with the Nehru family.
  109.
  110. Is there a single Congressman in Tamil Nadu to question this ? Parroting the
  111. line : "Our alliance with the Congress will continue" and ensuring one's own
  112. success is the mantra of the Tamil Nadu Congress leaders.
  113.
  114. Our Tamil Nadu Congress leaders follow the words of Thiruvalluvar; they are
  115. grateful and indebted to Karunanidhi. They know only one couplet of Thirukkural :
  116.
  117. Nandri marappadhu nandrandru; Nandrallathu
  118. Andre marappathu nandru.
  119.
  120. Meaning :
  121. It isn't righteous to not be grateful to good deeds;
  122. It is good to forget the bad deeds.
  123.
  124. Who is to tell Soniaji that Karunanidhi's Kuraloviyam is against the letter and
  125. spirit of such noble thoughts ?
  126.
  127. P.S. Kuraloviyam : A treatise on Thirukkural written by Karunanidhi.
